    He has exceptional shoulder angulation, which is often overlooked. This allows his front to lift and reach further forward than a straight shoulder, and sets the whole form and length of his stride. It will be good to follow him in the coming year, and I hope he stays sound.

    @@realtruth2817 Bid was hickory. He danced most every dance. In my mind he would have won the Belmont had Delp not tried to break Secretariat's record. That cost him the T.C. Bid was by no means picture perfect conformation wise. The greats never seem to be. Flightline is fragile. I don't envy the trainer. He's the type to do what's best for the horse. He's not going to chase accolades like Delp.

  • @marysueeasteregg

    @marysueeasteregg

    Dangerous prediction. Tapit has become a sire of sires, so you could be right. But many of the most dominant sires of recent (and probably earlier) decades, Flightline's daddy Tapit included, weren't the very top of the line as racehorses. Even if Flightline turned out the greatest North American sire since Northern Dancer it would not begin to guarantee he would produce the greatest filly ever. Who would have expected Private Account (13:6-4-1), Reviewer (13:9-3-1), Street Cry (12:5-6-1) and Medaglia d'Oro (17:8-7-0) to sire arguably the four best female racehorses on the dirt of the past 50 years? Citation and Secretariat were impeccably bred, great racehorses; Secretariat turned out to be a good but not great sire, and Citation a mediocre one. I'd bet on Flightline being an outstanding stallion. I'd bet against him producing the best ever filly, or a Triple Crown winner. But I'm old enough I probably will not live to see his youngest progeny complete their careers, assuming he survives to get pensioned at a typical age.

    Жыл бұрын

    To your second question: All Thoroughbreds born in the northern hemisphere in the same year are considered the same age, and share an official birthday of January 1. So as far as the Jockey Club and racing is concerned, Thoroughbreds born Jan. 1 and Dec. 31st of the same year are the same age. (I'm pretty sure this is true of racing Quarter Horses and Standardbreds, as well, who also race at young ages.) Thoroughbrds aren't fully grown until 5, or close to it. A difference of a few months growth and maturation can make a difference in the performance of still-growing 2-year-olds and 3-year-olds. It is an advantage -- not an absolute one, but real -- for a foal to be born early in the year, and breeders schedule matings accordingly. The breeding season is different in the southern hemisphere, and the age cut-off there is not January 1 as in the northern hemisphere. The great NZ/Australian gelding Phar Lap was born in October; the great Aussie mares Black Caviar and Winx were born in August and September, respectively. As to the first question: When the Thoroughbred was developed in Great Britain in the 17th and early 18th centuries, races were long and held in heats, and the horses participating in them were fully grown. Over time, interest in shorter races increased, and younger horses were found suitable for the less wearing middle and sprint distances. By the 19th century (maybe earlier?) racing of 3-year-olds and even 2-year-olds was popular, both in Europe and in the U.S. In Great Britain, 3 important races for 3-year-olds had became known in the mid-19th century as "the Triple Crown"; and in the 1930's, an American sportswriter started using the same label for the American 3-year-old races of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont. Some other nations with horseracing use the term Triple Crown, too, for important series of races. Because 2- and 3-yr-olds are physically immature they race [mostly] against their own age group. It is very rare -- unheard of in the U.S. currently, to the best of my knowledge -- for 2-year-olds to race older horses. The best 3-year-olds tend to race fellow 3-year-olds in the first half or so of the year, but often compete against older horses in the late summer or autumn. When they do compete in open/not age-restricted races, 3-year-olds are given a weight advantage in recognition of the fact they are not fully grown.

    Ruffian had this type of talent. She also had a smooth shuffling way of going. She never looked like she was out of a canter. We all know what happened. This colt appears to be hitting the ground hard in almost a climbing motion. Perhaps because he's being restrained. I love the fact Sadler has this colt. I wish the very best, but even the great Whitely couldn't save Ruffian from herself. I fear the "rabbits" that other trainers may throw at him. Sadler has no easy task. (This aside, Skipaway had a similar way of going, and he had a long successful career. Maybe it's because he didn't need the lead)

    I wonder if he has had peppermints, just out of curiosity. I mean, the personality talent bloodlines training conformation and care and everything still has to be there, just wondering if peppermint is that added touch. Several famous horses were fed peppermint treats. Could affect heart size you see. Avoid gmos additives these days and avoid gmo feed too for top athlete horses, and fluoride free water. blessings

    Well he's a bit long in the back so that makes for back trouble.....kidney trouble....any if he races on Lasix that just adds to it I would imagine that's why he's got the little Shadow roll on his head.... he runs with his head a bit High which usually indicates back trouble... and Churchill Downs is definitely not a place for back trouble or back end trouble.... but for his Daddy's sake I'm hoping he can handle it.... Skipaway couldn't nor Native Dancer....
