Zenyatta - 2008 Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic + Pre & Post Race

The magnificent Zenyatta remained undefeated with her ninth consecutive win in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic (gr. I), unwinding her patented late charge on the far turn and sweeping past the leaders in the homestretch for a 1 1/2-length victory at Santa Anita Oct. 24.
Zenyatta, the 4-year-old daughter of Street Cry - Vertigineux, by Kris S., wrapped up the older female handicap division with the victory and staked a strong claim for Horse of the Year.
John Shirreffs trains the strapping dark bay filly for Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Moss. Moss, co-founder of A&M Records, named Zenyatta for a recording by the super-group The Police.
The 1-2 choice in the field of eight was ridden to her fourth lifetime grade I victory by MikeSmith. The jockey won the Bessemer Trust Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I) with Stardom Bound earlier on the program.
"Today, she was just showing off," Smith said. "Used to be, she'd get nervous and sweaty when the people were hollering at her. Today, she just started dancing when they did that. She's just figured it out.
"I was just in awe of her," he added. "I do my job. I get out of her way and let her do her thing."

You look at that girl and she blows you away.The sheer POWER of her.The first time I saw a picture of her my eyes boggled.Everything,those shoulders,the tight line of her belly and then the hindquarters,one hell of a motor! Power and personality in spades.Watching her dance.And I love the way Mike strokes her neck.No smack smack smack,just so gentle.They were an amazing team.He's a great jockey!
Being from Virginia I have always thought Secretariat was the best. I have to admit I’m a big fan of Zenyatta. She was absolute perfection!

A living legend, a perfect creature. ZENYATTA amazes me. No horse can and will never do what she did every race. It is impossible to win almost every race from dead last.

Truth is..her line is true throughbred!!! People breed for hot shots! Zenyatta shows what the race track is all about!!! Training speaks volumes! Riders are the true feelers..,healers....as are trainers! ZEN...... IN HARMONY!!!! VIBRATION. IN HARMONY! THEY DIDN'T EVER HOPE FOR....SHE ALWAYS WAS!!!....JUST THE HARMONY OF THE HORSE!!! SHE JUST ALWAYS WAS BORN A WINNER!!! GREAT RIDER!!! SHE WAS BORN TO RUN, AND WIN!!! THAT HORSE DOESN'T LOSE!!!! SHE HAS A SPECTACULAR AIRE ABOUT HER! THAT MARES SPIRIT HASN'T BEEN BROKE!!! EVER!!!!!! She loves what she does and does it with out hesitation!!! No one has to ask!!! She was born to run!!!!💜
I love watching Zenyatta walk...if one can call that walking. Just watching her it doesn't look like she could run but she does and she runs to win!

I keep coming back to this. I was at Santa Anita that day. It was electric, to say the least. Even more so the next year which, to my dismay, I couldn't attend.

The incredible size is very hard to maintain their soundness, you have to give kudos to the trainer and the owners in taking care of her.

I chuckle every time I hear Trevor Denman's call in this race saying "and here's Zenyatta, she knows she's in a race today." Actually, Zenyatta ran by several pretty classy fillies & mares in this race without ever even blowing hard. Someone mentions doing it in jest post-race, but no more than this race took out of her, I have no doubt she could've come back the next day and given Raven's Pass, Henrythenavigator, Curlin, & the whole nine yards of them all they wanted in the Classic.with change.
I named my pet tortoise after Giacomo. I haven't named my first born after Zenyatta yet.

I don't care what anyone says; Zenyatta is the best of all time. Secretariat is second.
She probably could've campaigned in the classic instead. If all the stars aligned for her, she could've won the Classic three times in a row.

Funny early on shortly after the break Trevor denman seems bothered to even talk about the early spreedhorses .
She is now an aged mare, but will always be Queen Z.

I've often wondered given how well she always ran at Santa Anita on the pro-ride surface if Raven's Pass & Henrythenavigator might not have had their hands full in the BC Classic if Jerry and Ann Moss & John Shirreffs had decided to go to the Classic instead of the Ladies Classic with Zenyatta in 2008 instead of waiting until 2009?
I think getting 1-2 on a horse of Zenyatta's character in a distance race and in a small sized field on a track she loves is a tremendous bargain. Not sure why would you try to beat her. You'd have to have offered me around 200-1 on the field to even consider it.
