Crazy amount of detail and the backgrounds just meltingly gorgeous
So excited about the comparison video! CAN'T WAIT!
Loved the tour guide photo. Great review matt!
Your latest reviews are exactly what I want to watch. Please keep coming up this. PS: Amazing that you travelled half the world with the Otus and nobody even noticed :)
Keep showing us the best Mark! This is great!
Zero chromatic aberrations!!!, I thought that it was a crazy promise from Zeiss until I saw this review, wow. Thanks
Daaaaaaaamn, man! Sweet lens and interview!
Wow - that lens is mind-blowing!
Hi Matt I'm new to your channel but I can tell u now that I am thoroughly impressed with how informative you are. Anyway! I'm a Sony shooter and I see that u shot these pics with a zeiss lens on a Nikon and a canon, but how does the zeiss lens made for the Sony compare against the ones u have shown here?
You're drooling ☺ Can't wait to get my fingers on the thing next week, only to realise that I can never really justify getting one and fall into a deep depression.
these product and lens reviews are really great and how i first found 'thatNikonguy'. pls don't stop them as your content evolves.

Thanks David
Great images! Great piece of glass!
Can't wait for the shootout vid! Keep up the good work Matt.
One thing I noticed too with the book shot is the color finging that is totally absent in the otus and quite present in the nikkor !
Cant' wait for your comparison :D
Great work Matt. Curious as to what Sigma 85 you've compared it with. They haven't sampled an ART 85 already, have they?
Dat reflection in the glasses. wow. Can't stop looking at it.
Ugggg......I hate all of the lenses I own now.
To me what really sets this lens apart, besides the unbelievable sharpness, is the way the focus so beautifully falls off. Looking at the raw image really tells the story.
Great video! But who Do you pick Tina or Jade?
are you concerned over the unsealed rear element? dust and grim entry over time.
Good job! I'd like to see a comparison between the Zeiss Milvus 85mm f1.4 and the Zeiss Otus 85mm f1.4!
matt, compared this lens to Leica M90/2 AA and ZEISS Sonnar 135mm Apo,which is the best middle-telephoto lens(135)?
What should one invest in for portraits (or at least what are pros and cons) - medium format like this Fuji/Pentax/Hasselblad or, say, something like d810 + zeiss otus 85 mm?
HI,Matt,as i know(for example) Rokinon 85mm 1.4 has almost the same sharpness? How do you think? Thanks beforehand!
great review! would love if the Rokinon 85mm F1.4 would also be included in the comparison :)
Looks amazing!!! I personally think if your shooting in a studio set up, or anywhere you have time to think,it would be great. But As a working wedding and family portrait photographer the auto focus is a must. Would love to try it out, just because it really excites me as a lover of photography. Great work as ever Matt, your videos really are great cheers.
Great review, thanks.....
hey matt, when/if you get the chance could you please do a comparison between the new sigma 150-600 contemporary vs sport (of the same make) i know the sport is bigger and has more elements in more groups...but is there a difference in image quality? thank you
Have you got your hands on the new wide angle Otus yet?
Could you also compare this to the Sony Ziess 50mm 1.4 SSM... Thanks
Hi Matt, I am considering getting the 85 or 55 otus lens. Would you say the 85 is far better than the 55 or is it neck and neck? Before putting £3,000 in a lens, better make sure you get the right one. Thanks a lot, Felix
WOW amazing lens...
5:43 what monitrs and setup is that? By the wat I can see why it's priced that much, the detail is the best I've ever seen! I wonder, who's the target of these Zeiss lenses? I mean when you compare it with the Nikkor it's hands down 1000 times better but still, that's just for comparsion. With the best 85mm from Nikkor you wouldn't tell the difference after pp unless you need to print a gigantic photo, so again what's the purpose and main target of these lenses?
I love it - the best lens
How does it fare against the Panasonic/Leica Nocticron 42.5mm 1.2?
From your experience, do you find that 1.8 lenses have better looking bokeh than 1.4 or lower? And if that is the case, are 1.4 lenses really relegated to low light conditions rather than portrait work? Lastly, how do you maintain acceptable focus while doing portraiture, when the extremely shallow depth of field constrains one's creativity due to amount of subject which is in focus? Hope that made sense.
Nice review, Matt. Obviously, I can't afford one but I'm still looking forward to your comparison video. :-)
Great video! I enjoy your comments and I agree with what you say. I personally have the Otus 55 and the Apo Sonar 135 the sharpness is incredible, but if I may add a little comment is that these lenses are made for certain environment and types of shootings as you mentioned. If you are willing to shoot a wedding with one of those my advice is to practice and practice because there are situations in a wedding where manual focus will make you lose so many important moments that you just can't ever get back! If you are a wedding photographer and you are willing to shoot manual, well the 2 cameras are a must!...just make sure that you don't have 2 manual focus lens LOL ... Thank you so much for your videos!!! Great job!!!

Makes perfect sense!
Is that manual focused lens ?
As per usual Matt, great work. Sharp and stunning. Too bloody expensive though for standard DSLR fair, but if you're a tog who earns 100K+ per year, £3000 for a lens isn't a shabby investment for high quality sharpest results on a full frame. Would love to see shots taken on a newer Nikon body & Canon 5D mk3 for comparison.
I cant decide between the otus and the tokina vista primes
Can you please do a pana leica 42.5 nocticron review matt. pleaseeee
Amazing !
That is no surprise that this lens is very good. The 55mm already marked Zeiss intention. Sigma will roll for an Art version of an 85mm, can't wait to see how good that's gonna be.
Great review, makes me really want that gorgeous thing. The price though... just looking at it hurts so much.
Matt Granger I love Sigma's new Art line and I have huge respect for Otus but manual focus is not for me, I've tried it many times and in the situations that I find myself, I don't have the time. How does this compare to the other Zeiss lenses. I'm guessing focusing this at night on a DSLR would be really difficult too? I'm curious how you find it shooting lingerie, nudes, models etc if you've used it for that purporse. Maybe for studio work it would be great.
Would be cool to see a comparison between this and the sigma when that is released.
Looking forward to the 85 shootout!
No comparison with the Sony Zeiss 85/1.4? :c
oooohhhh!! Matt, what are you doing!! you showed the Otus on ...1:14 .... a ...... Nikkormat!! I still have 2 in my possession, I started out on that fantastic, simplicity = beauty cam in the 70s! you are a devil, seducing me :) by the way, great comparison 3:27 using text on a book page. Loved that.
Matt, are you buying one?
Love to have this on my A7ii. And be brilliant on the A7Rii.
"It blows anything out of the water from Leica." They're also at least twice as big and heavy as the 1.4 Summilux. I'd love a comparison of the 55 Otus against the Sony 55 f/1.8 FE Zeiss.
ATG says to save your money and get the Hasselblad 80/2.8 with an adapter for your camera. You can just use old manual C/L/O/N/M/P lenses with an adapter. A used Hasselblad 500 kit (with 80/2.8) is going for less than $700.00. Overall many today shooters don't know how to focus manually. Or they are wearing glasses so they can't see the viewfinder well.
Very interesting !!!
I like this type of your videos very much. Nice reviews, somewhat Philipp Bloom in terms of quality information, but shorter )

Dmitry Elizarov I take that as a great compliment Dmitry - I respect him a lot. cheers
5:40 matt raws for this one too please
A test between the Zeiss Otus 85 F1.4 and the Sony Zeiss 85 F1.4 (A-mount) would be *extremely* interesting. Best: put it both on the A7R with two adapters, so that there is no difference in the camera that influence the results.
I'd heard good things but wow! This thing is sharper at 100% crop than my kit lens at is with no crop. I realize the kit lens is junk but that's quite impressive.
I'm curious what you think of the "Angry Photographer's" assertion, that Otus lenses are crap, lol. Have you seen this guy?

sharp
I just ordered the Canon 85mm 1.8 what is your opinion on that one? at 10X less the price of course its no where near quality of that Otus.. but hoping for a decent lens atleast

I may hold on to the canon 85mm 1.8 untill I can afford the art version, then I'll sell it.. I will be able to get most of my money back on it anyway because its a great lens. There are 2 current Art lenses I want. 18-35 1.8 art and the new 50mm 1.4 art Ive used the 18-35 and LOVED it. Im still on a crop body

Brian Michael i have all of the art and sport lense available except for the 30mm f/1.4 (i have the 35mm so not worth getting the 30mm) and they are my favourite lenses, the 50mm f1.4 Art is so sharp...and the 120-300mm f/2.8 is an awesome sport lense.

Brian Michael That 18-35 is quickly becoming a legend.
Nice, but I think I will wait for the inevitable Sigma Art 85mm, or make do with the very nice Samyang/Rokinon. That said 85mm isn't my lens, for me even 90mm is preferable, but 105mm or 135mm is my favorite. Amazing CA correction on that lens in the text shot though.
You have to pay to play, great review as always. Thanks!

The Mindblowing. That is the propper name of this glass orgasm made of cristalised unicorn tears.
Well i would expect a $4500 lens to be great....
Would love a Bokeh comparison against the Nikkor 105mm F2DC though...
If it outperforms the D810, then Moire may intrude? Yep. Simple rule, when lens has lower resolution than the sensor, Moire will not happen - but if lens presents more resolution than the sensor can 'make sense of' and you have potential problems.
@mattgranger
9 жыл бұрын
You can certainly get moire appear with lower red lenses - as few if any match the d800 - depends mostly on the subject being shot and the reproduction size
The price I understand but the manual focus is still a big turn off for me

Matt Granger I heard a different story that Sony don't allow CZ to make AF lens for other brands camera.
@DmitryBrodsky007
9 жыл бұрын
Tarzocin I hear that Zeiss officially keeps saying that AF in a lens interferes with their superior optics and they don't want to do compromise. Of course for Sony, there is exception :)
That's a lotta Dosh.... more than halfway to a new D4S.... but it is a fine lens...
I'm gonna wait for sigma to completely undercut all of them. Their 35mm & 50mm art are among the sharpest in their class.
So is Photo News And reviews dead?

OMG am i seeing zero fringing on the Otus?!?!?
Good morning from Spain. Congratulations on the review, high quality, as all you do. Many doubts plague me. I am a lover of old objectives with the corresponding adapter. In these objectives I have the problem of infinity focus and loss of sharpness. I understand that I may not be a native objective. Loxia thought when I saw that wonderful,, fully manual focus omenaje old school. Happy and saving money Loxia vine and on the market for 35 f1.4 mounts E. Smoke made my head literally. The party continues and appears BATIS. I am a sea of doubt. I want the maximum image quality. I can not get to OTUS Within this range below 2000 euros. What do you recommend me? batis 25f2 35 f 1.4 Loxia 35 F 2 Thank you very much for your work greetings from Spain
But I'm steel wait for you compare 85 Otus vs 85 L ( I had this lens -it's really stupidly sharp , gorgeous design hefty astonishing ) Keep in touch

@Clint_the_Audio-Photo_Guy

+Ekiboy1 The Milvus 85mm might be the greatest 85mm ever. Otus may be a tiny bit sharper, but the Milvus bokeh and rendering may be superior to the Otus. All spherical lenses and 7 apo pieces of glass. Niiice. I'll know once I get to test it. I did a video on the 50mm lens and it's really good.
@Ekiboy1
8 жыл бұрын
+Photo314159 Nice review on that 50mm. Looks really promising and by what I have read, the 85mm Milvus should be even better. The only problem with Milvus is that it is manual focus, and as we know that is not for everybody and not for every situation. I have actually placed an order for 85mm, I own already Nikon 85 1.8g and I plan to keep it and use both, Nikon and Milvus.
@Clint_the_Audio-Photo_Guy
8 жыл бұрын
Yep, the 85mm looks like it'll be the best in the series. Use manual focus for a few days and it's like you've always been doing it. Use the green dot as your guide, it's easier than you'd think. It'll work for everything but fast action. The f/1.8 lens can be your light weight option, since the Milvus is a beast at 1200g. :)
where's Tina?
You lucky, lucky man you ....

Anyone considering this lens should read this blog post yannickkhong.com/blog/2016/2/12/extra-credits-applying-the-micro-contrast-test-onto-an-otus-lens. And also watch the angry photographers KZread videos about this lens
Good, now put it on a medium format! (A joke, but to be serious, just about the only thing that could take full advantage of a lens that sharp)
So these basicly have no autofocus because a robot will not get the amount of nouance you now need to learn to play with as a photographer and not because zeiss is not able to put the electrics in, right?
