Zeiss Otus 85mm f/1.4 Planar T* Review - Simply the Best!

This is a thorough video review of the incomparable Zeiss Otus 85mm f/1.4 Planar T*. This is, put simply, the most amazing lens I have ever used...despite its size, weight, price, and being a manual focus only lens. @@alestbest Uh... The Nikon 85/1.4 is not even in the same ball park as the Milvus 85/1.4 so... its not even in the same universe as the Otus. The Nikon 85/1.4 is old tech and not even as sharp as the newer Nikon 85/ 1.8 G which is pretty cheap and shoddy built. Nice try though... but I am a experienced Nikon shooter myself and know better. My advice is save your money for the Milvus and get rid of that old dog Nikon 85/1.4 on trade in and you will be 95% of the Otus. I will make you a bet that after obtaining the Milvus...you will have not miss the old 85 dog.

And the photos you take are simply stunning. I’ve bought lenses after watching your reviews. On top of that, I’ve grown a deep appreciation for how respectful you are as well - there are a lot of photographers on KZread who make cringeworthy comments about women and models that make me feel queasy, but you’ve demonstrated nothing but warmth and enthusiasm for your art. Dustin Abbott I also bought the 135mm Zeiss. Due to the magnification, of the 135mm, focusing is much easier than 85mm. At 55mm it could be exciting (more difficult). I use the following trick: while I focus, I move the eye (head) very little to the left and right. Our eyes are not made to staring at a point. I'm already looking forward to the report to the 55mm. This one I have repeatedly watched. A high price requires much arguments. :-)

Nice review Dustin and congrats on getting your hands on this. I can only imagine the overwhelming feeling and revelation you must have experienced when you first loaded the files on your screen. I have been following you awhile and seen many lenses pass through your hands, however sending this optical masterpiece back to Zeiss was probably painful to say the least. However for all you have done for Zeiss in your reviews, and how many photographers probably purchased a Zeiss lens based on your reviews... they should have let you keep this one. Oh ya...the shirt is awesome. Who makes it?

The price of quality in those aspects is hard to put a price tag on. If you value these aspects then it is worth every penny. I have the Sigma 50 art and a couple other art series lenses. I use these on my Nikon d850,810 and500 bodies. They seem to me to have contrast and an affect to give the illusion of sharpness. I’ve been buying some old Nikon non ai low element count lenses lately. I’m seeing less sharpness but more detail out of these old lenses from the 1960s and 70s. So lens resolution and sensor resolution is more than just sharpness. This is one reason I like your reviews. When I e seen you compare so different lenses you also speak of microcontrast. Most folks don’t . You actually show the difference between a sharp lens and what microcontrast is . That microcontrast gives us depth within an image. Creating an image with dimension to it . Depth of field without having to shoot at a super wide open aperture. In landscape we don’t use that very often. I shoot live music photography mostly so I’m shooting wide open all the time . But in post I work hard to make my image have depth. I do shoot a lot of Sigma lenses too. I’ve noticed my Nikkor 70-200 e fl vr has more microcontrast than my Sigma lenses. Most Zoom lenses don’t have those details in the picture. I think maybe this is the reason for the high price tag on this lens. Zeiss works hard to have perfectly corrected lenses and that microcontrast. But from the reviews I’ve seen of some of their lenses they will leave in an aberration to not take out the microcontrast. Aka Zeiss Pop . Again thanks for your phenomenal reviews. You are so appreciated by so many. We here in the US even forgive you for being from Ca-nada .

I'm supposed to be looking at the Otus right now, but Zeiss hasn't gotten it to me in time. As for the 28-70 - I don't own an EOS R body, so doing reviews on RF lenses is difficult as I have to borrow both a camera and the lens...which gets expensive.

Dustin Abbott looking forward to that! Do you have an idea how Otus compare to sigma lenses in general? Best

I found the lens quite easy to focus between the combination of focus confirm and visualization (the lens is so sharp that it really helps!). Using a 6D with the focus screen changed out would make it even easier. Live View is also very effective if you have a little more time. My keeper rate was actually very high with the lens, however.

Dustin Abbott Thank you! I'm surprised you were able to do this with focus confirm and/or the default screen. I found FC to be very hit & miss - I always felt that when the camera beeped I'd gone to far and had to reverse slightly! And the default screen shows something like f4 depth of field, which ain't much help when shooting at f1.4. I will persevere! Thanks again.

Dustin, I love your series of reviews of Zeiss Outs and Milvus lenses. They are the best reviews online. Actually, I got the Milvus 135APO after watching your review, and I approve all the message you delivered in your review. Now, I have a question for you. I know you are using Sigma 85/1.4 art DGDN as your portrait lens. How do you compare the Sigma to this Zeiss 85 Otus? I am also using that Sigma 85, and know how good it is. I just want to know in what aspects, the Zeiss is special with respect to the already excellent Sigma. Thank you!

Also, I would appreciate it if you can compare the Otus 85 to the milvus 135 APO, for which you have used for a long time. In spite of the apparent different focal length, I heard that 135APO has similar image quality and color rendition. Is that correct? How about other aspects, such as manual focus operation? I noted that the manual focus ring of 135APO is a little bit heavy for me.

I haven't spent time with the Milvus/Otus lenses for a bit (Zeiss has been really quiet for a few years). The Otus excels in having a "look" that few other lenses map. It's the combination of color, contrast, and vignette that really focus the eye and make the subject pop!. The Sigma is sharp, compact, and convenient, but it's not as special as the Otus. The Milvus 135 definitely has a lot of the same DNA as the Otus 85.

Found a good deal, but I just bought a Sony A7R II, Sony Zeiss 55mm and Sony Zeiss 16-35mm. I’ll probably wait some time. I can totally see the “special” and “Zeiss look” in that image. Dustin, I have a difficult decision to make in a few days. I recently sold both my Canon EF85mm f1.2L II and also the Canon EF50mm f1.2L series lenses in order to raise money for the Zeiss OTUS 85mm f1.4. I do a lot of portrait work and also a lot of stuff in between. I wanted something that I could show off on the Canon 1Dx and when mounted, the OTUS looks like it was tailor made for the 1Dx. However I recently stopped by at B&H Photo to get a look at another monster called the Canon EF200mm f2.0 L which is an incredibly difficult to beat lens in the portrait department. But one has to back off quite a bit with that lens prior to pressing the shutter. What are your thoughts on the Zeiss OTUS 85mm f1.4 vs the Canon EF200mm f2.0 L in the portrait arena and also generally? And as a side question, can a person actually use the Canon EF200mm f2.0 L as a walk around lens with such a focal length? Thank you again

Sometimes I still consider going back to DSLRs just to use this lens and some other Zeiss lenses. I know that it’s easier to focus on mirrorless cameras and that the dynamic range is better, but I just don’t like adapting due to the looks of the combination. I want my camera to look slick, whereas the camera and lenses flow together properly, like Zeiss lenses and their respective lens hoods that don’t look like afterthoughts. I just never get that flow on Sony, and as many Canon users that switched miss, I miss the ergonomics and the straight out of camera colours. But I would have to work around the poor dynamic range at points if I get the 5DS R, though. Do you lose much of an advantage when using a mirrorless over a DSLR with a focusing screen when wanting to manually focus wide aperture lenses? I’m not so familiar with focusing screens, but I was advised to take a look at them. Do you need to replace the screen yourself, or can you buy a camera that already got it installed at a fair price? They aren’t that expensive if you buy them beside the camera, but I’m not so sure how safe it is for me to replace the screen by myself, but I will do some research. I’m looking to get s 5D Mark IV or 5DS R and a future RF camera in some years if I do decide to sell my a7R IV. Haven’t invested much in Sony glsss yet, so the hope is still there. Are you still considering this lens yourself or are you maybe planning to get the “autofocusing Otus” RF 85mm f/1.2? You can get the Otus used for about the same price. The manual focus experience is also something difference when you mostly photograph still subjects. I also don’t really like the wide angle zooms or 35mm lenses on Sony, but I really like the 16-35mm f/4L and 35mm f/1.4L II. But I might just stick with Sony after all for now. They are some nice manual focus lenses as some of the Loxias and Voigtländer, but they are not as fast or as sharp wide open (expect the APO Voigtländers). Considering the Loxia 21mm and Voigtländer 65mm. I can’t justify the Loxia 35mm, as I want a faster 35mm for streets and some portraits. If I only did landscapes, I would probably stockpile on manual Zeiss and Voigtländer lenses for their incredible contrast even at longer distance

The short answer is that yes, manual focusing on DSLRs is a LOT tougher. I understand what you are saying, and other than your objection to a native mount, I suspect the best platform for the Otus 85 will probably be the new R5. Maybe then Zeiss will step up and start delivering RF mount Otus lenses.

Dustin Abbott That would be a dream come true. I hope they step up and create Otus like lenses on the RF mount or maybe some Loxias but a bit bigger. Actually, I will probably be best off sticking with Sony till I find the RF mount more interesting (the R5 or some future R camera, more RF lenses and maybe some Zeiss and Voigtländer offerings). Sure, the RF primes are phenomenal, but I’m just not interested in them, at least not the current ones for my use, nor that many GM or Sigma lenses, even though they are incredible optically. Well, I’m mostly in to stills of architecture, landscapes and some streets, so it does make sense after all. Thanks for your time, and I’m excited to keep on following you journey! I have watched many, many of your reviews and I really appreciate your interest and effort. I mostly agree with your visions and conclusions. The main door stopper is always budget. If we had the money, we would have anything from different brands of DSLRs, mirrorless, multiple lenses in the same focal length ranges and so on, just for some specific characteristics physically in terms of ergonomics, looks and flow or optically. For example compact Loxia lenses for landscapes and travel or Otus lenses for portraits, low light or even more details and so on. It would be cool if Zeiss designed a 400-500mm prime as well as the Canon 400mm f/5.6L or Nikon 500mm PF, but I doubt it. If Zeiss won’t produce RF mount lenses, which would be an illogical move of them, I might adapt the Otus. It doesn’t look as ridiculous on the RF platform to that of the FE. They might not be able to make proper AF lenses for the RF mount due to Canon not wanting to share the necessary details, but they can surely produce some nice manual focus lenses.

Compared to an 85mm/1.2L this lens is in another league. A long term investment that will reveal its qualities even more with a better camera/sensor. See: DxOMark.com: Carl Zeiss Otus 85mm/1.4 Canon 6D: DxOMark: 36; Sharpness 19 P-Mix; Transmission 1.6 Tstop; Vignetting -1.6 EV. Canon 5D Mk III: DxOMark: 38; Sharpness 21 P-Mix; Transmission 1.7 Tstop; Vignetting -1.6 EV. Nikon D810: DxOMark: 48; Sharpness 35 P-Mix; Transmission 1.7 Tstop; Vignetting -1.3 EV. With all: Distortion 0.2%; Chr. Aberr. 3 micrometer. I would love to see more dramatic (high contrast) photos in backlight.

I'd like to put this up against the new Milvus 85mm. I bet it's damn close, with the Milvus having potentially slightly better bokeh due to all spherical optics and .1% less sharp. Poorer mans Otus. You'd only have to sell a couple lenses for a Milvus. :)

It's an incredible optic. The price, however, is insurmountably problematic for 99% of photographers. And even for those for whom it is not, you have to seriously considerably whether the marginal utility increase can justify the immense cost. Personally when I look at the lens, both aesthetically and optically, it looks to me that they wanted to create something with noticeably MF characteristics. For me if i'm going to spend $4500 I would much rather put together a MF system and get the added benefits of a larger sensor in the process. It's possible that I may rent this lens in the future, but it's more likely that I would just end up buying the Zeiss 135mm f2 Apo Sonnar and stop there. And I have a very strong suspicion that Sigma is working on an answer to this lens just as with the Otus 55mm. It does look like fun though.

I don't disagree with your opening statement. This is not a lens for the masses (although, for the record, demand has outstripped supply so far for the Otus line). Ironically, your argument about the medium format perspective is the inverse of what Zeiss (and myself) is stating. A lens like this helps gives the some of the characteristic of the larger sensor without many of the shortcomings of most MF backs or cameras. Your statement regarding a rental is certainly a good idea for many that are conflicted as to whether or not the lens is worth it for them. That is a question that can ultimately only be answered by the individual.

Dustin Abbott I've heard Zeiss evangelists and engineers speak more than once of achieving MF 'like' results (of course we have to bear in mind that due to sheer physics it is still only a 'like', a larger image area simply has optical characteristics which you cannot achieve fully in a 35mm frame). But I haven't heard them speak of shortcomings, per se. In my mind every format has shortcomings (MF lacks speed and ease of use to a degree, 35mm - were getting much much closer to ultimate resolution and detail but even cameras like the Nikon D800E can't compete with a 60MP Hasseblad, m4/3 DOF issues we don't need to really go over). So when I'm shooting MF, I don't see it as shortcoming as much as being willing to accept the constraints of the system. And with offerings like the Pentax 645D and Pentax 645Z with a CMOS sensor some of those issues are beginning to shrink away. And here is where I see a potential problem for Zeiss and Hasselblad for that matter. Technology is shrinking the price/performance faster than they are able to increase the performance gap on their end. The 645Z is a prime example of that with Hasselblad reducing by 50% the price of its 40MP MF clearly in response to downward price pressure from Pentax. I see Zeiss wanting to create and ultra premium brand with Otus. They say demand is outstripping supply but that may simply be artificial supply constraints. When Sigma delivered the 50mm 1.4 Art I saw serious purchasing discussions about the Otus virtually disappear. If I were them I would reconsider my pricing structure, but this is only my opinion.

trevorpinnocky The intended use for this Lens is on a pro FF Camera, taking Photos you can charge a lot of money for; Portrait, Product, or Property Photos, that will be enlarged. The Owner of the Lens _can_ take it outside and shoot pictures of Nature. If you can make a lot of money shooting pictures of trees and grass then it is worth the risk of damage from taking it hiking / climbing, otherwise it sits on a tripod (that enhances it's sharpness and reduces the risk of damage, unless you own a $20 Tripod -- which would be poor budgeting). If I took a lot of 'P Photos' or had a $4K+ FF Camera this would be a nice addition, otherwise one must budget for one's needs. For that price you could get a fine quality Camera and an excellent Lens. With both a fine Camera and excellent Lens you will be better off than buying this Lens and having no money for anything else. Do you want to bring a Bodyguard with you so you do not get bumped into or robbed for $10K worth of Camera and Lens. A Lens you can not take anywhere is like a girlfriend (a nosepicker, or too friendly to strangers) you can not take anywhere, not as good as you first thought. If you can charge a few hundred an hour then your Customers will demand quality, which this Lens will provide (and you save time / money fixing in Post). You can 'easily' pay for the cost of the Lens (and your other expenses) in a few months, otherwise you either do not "need" this Lens; but it will look nice sitting on the shelf. Thanks for the great Review Dustin. Note: I would have preferred 'pixel peeping' of the corners and not of the center of the Shot (EG: 1:55), but do not make the effort for me as I will not be buying this.

trevorpinnocky Watch the release of the Otus 85 on the Zeiss channel here on KZread and you will see that I am referring to. I've used and reviewed the Sigma, and it is a great lens. But don't kid yourself; the optics are not in the same league, nor is the microcontrast wide open. It's a great lens, and has AF, but it is not the extreme optic that the Otus is. The biggest downside, too, is that the AF on Sigma's ART (both the 35 and the 50) line is somewhat inconsistent. Still, for many people, the resolution is enough and the addition of AF makes it a more practical option than the Otus.

As a new owner of the Sigma 85mm 1.4 DG Art, I'd have to say what Sigma have managed to produce with this lens is more than worthy of a head to head comparison with the Otus. This is, without doubt, the sharpest lens at f1.4 that I have owned. It has phenomenal bokeh, very fast and accurate AF (on Sony), a silky smooth 180º manual focus ring, and off the charts resolution. The 400% zooms I've done show a lens that is sharp down the pixel level. So let's get these two Titans into the ring? And by the way, I still think if you're going to buy a full spread of Zeiss Otus optics, you'll be better of simply going MF, now even more practical with the new Fuji mirroless and Hasselblad mirrorless systems. ;)
