Tune down a half step?!!! What did Phil mean by that?!?

Instead of having the standard tuning (eBGDAE), he tuned down his guitar to have a half-step down tuned guitar (eb Bb Gb Db Ab Eb). Therefore, a C chord becomes a B chord, a G chord becomes a F# and so on. That's why he plays the song in the key of B but with the C shapes.

Another song with a ridiculous octave and a half range from low B to top F which only professional singers can sing - it's for listening, not sharing, it's no use to the church, and frankly it's inconsiderate and self indulgent song writing.

That's a bit harsh don't you think? Also, your statement is completely false. We are doing this song in our Sat. night and two Sunday services. We do it in B and it sounds great, is an uplifting song that offers up worship to our Lord. How is that self indulgent?

Well I've forgotten what the original key is, but an octave and a half is far too big a range for a lot of folks, and top F is ridiculous - guys often struggle above C, and ladies above D, so 'F' is half an octave higher than many non-professional singers can sing, and half the guys will be miming in the chorus. You can drop it down but then the ladies will struggle in the verse, so it ends up being a band performance for a lot of people, and that aint praise and worship!

So, I think the range is wide only because of the octave jump that is so common (and effective) in modern worship songs when the Pro's sing them. One trick I use is to try finding a key where you can sing everything in a more comfortable range and just don't do the octave shift; sing it all in one octave range. Maybe it will work better. Unless you're just trolling, in which case, nevermind and God bless!
