Your Boxing Stance is Wrong

Спорт

Tony Jeffries shares a common boxing stance mistake made by beginners. Many newbies in boxing make this mistake in their boxing guard because they thought it is proper. With this, you could easily get hit by your sparring partner or opponent in a match

    I'm fairly short and before I started exercising and training for boxing, I've been severely underdeveloped musclar wise and weight wise all my life. I'm 5'4 and 120lbs. Squaring up for peekaboo stance when the situation arises is a thing I so situationally since mixing things up is always good in my book. Thank you for this video, I'm a beginner and am often put off in my local boxing gym as I'm the "smallest" guy there. Depends on your style of boxing. Delahoya fought very square and was successful. Tyson fought more squared up. But it is better for a defensive fighter or counter puncher.

  • @TJE.13

    @TJE.13

    Interesting you used those two as an example, because they were both actually left handed but stood orthodox. Standing more square makes it easier to shift balance to the lead leg and gives more space to rotate with the left hook. Canelo also does this on purpose to bait people into throwing certain punches and for the power left hook, in the Caleb plant fight he literally finished him with a Tyson combo from a square stance he weaved and threw the power left hook.

    I love videos like that, they are helping me to feel more comfortable by knowing that if someone want to attack me, I can protect my self, instead of knowing nothing and having more chance of getting beaten up by an angry guy. There os even a small chance that someone angry will recognize a boxing stance and will think twice if he realy want to risk attacking you, because it seems like you know how to defend and probably fight, because you are using a boxing stance so guy might think that you are training boxing, so he can feel some of fear. I'm always trying it in real life to try doing things better and get them into muscle memory, even if I get stressed out, muscle memory helps you stickinig to your defense stance and block attacks even if you are stessed out and cannot take your thinking in piece. But also you need to get that feeling of fear in your legs and arms and be able to convert the fear into strength by taking breath and changing way of thinking to be able to actually move and make good punches if needed.

    Sir you are a god-damn scientist. I fight bladed stance instead of that faulty orthodox stance from the start. Rotational power is big. Also, fencing jab from the outside, with a Philly shell. Cuts down the stamina loss of keeping your jab hand up so long. Lead punch tucked near the chin to block and counter at all times And then I am a switch hitter so it keeps my profile small, keeps me outside and mobile, and keeps my arms fresh. I’ve only been practicing by myself for like a month but my style feels SO comfortable and organic to me now that I trained up my left side for punches and kicks. Grappling I cannot learn without a partner, but you have tremendously helped my level up with my striking, and I swear your hand wrapping video saved my hands and shoulders because once I got a heavy bag and a speed bag at my gym I DOVE head in. Never had the opportunity to train before so this has been a life changer, and your channel has been a game changer!

    Yup, tucked in, chin down, and knees slightly bent. Although the single best thing I learned when I trained as a youth was balance. Balance allows you to shift your weight, plant your feet, and also make defensive maneuvers. Road work, jumping rope, anything that makes your legs and feet strong and springy, does wonders in a boxing ring. Like a building, without a strong foundation, it'll crumble easily.

    Tony is right in a broad sense. The feet alignment is very popular in ancient martial arts like Kung Fu and the traditional Karate. It provides the advantage of leaping back and forth increasing the distance for defense and filling the gap swiftly delivering a punch from a distance, where your opponent doesn't expect attack in one step. Besides the sport aspect of fighting, in real fight for life in the real world, the feet alignment diminish the danger of collecting a snap-kick under the crotch. Instead of checking with the front leg the low kicks it would be better to have your weight shifted towards the back leg so that the center of the gravity splits your stance in two sections at a ratio of 2 to 1 ( closer to the back leg ). This would give you the advantage to retreat your front leg swift and your opponent would just kick air. The technique is like kicking a ball with your rear leg pushing the ground and leaping backwards. The retreat of your front leg is then as swift as a hand's turn.

    I think your wrong here. That stance may be "wrong" for a guy of your build but almost everyone i fight is gonna be taller than me and being shelled up and squared up is gonna help me take advantage of my power while also keeping me safe so I can put forward pressure on my opponent so I'm not getting lit up with jabs and crosses i can't get by.

    I love peekaboo and I practice every day I also switch sides being naturally Sp… I watch lomo, Mayweather any boxer with fancy footwork/ defence that works… it’s time we upgrade boxing coaching in my opinion and make it more technical in that each boxer is different for a start off… then modify accordingly but teach switch drills and to punch from all angles… head foot movement is key for straight on boxers who are straight on for power aggression due to being small or short… I’m a 5’6 female.

    @@Tony_Jeffries Julio Cesar Chavez used this stance and made it work though. When you're square you can counter with BOTH hands in a close up brawl AND weave in and out and block in both directions; where as a more bladed stance only allows you to generate power with one.

    I'm sure there are alot of peekaboo students like myself who disagree. If you see someone standing, square up it could mean 2 things. They don't know what they're doing, or they really know what their doing. You may be fighting someone with agressive defense because this stance is effective for slipping jabs and weaving under hooks, while being in a position to generate alot of force during counter punches.
