You’ve Been Doing it Wrong! Boxing Lean Back

Спорт

Tony Jeffries shares the complete tutorial of lean back defense technique in boxing. Leaning back is a great defense because you are getting out of range from the opponent's punches and also takes the power from their punch. Tony also shares how to throw a counter after you lean back and how to attack an opponent who always leans back.

I think you should practice both lean back methods. There is a Thai boxer who is very famous how quick he was with this when the opponent stance closer and swings ( or kicks, but that doesn’t happen of course in boxing ..) Love the enthusiasm and fun in your videos !!

It always impresses me how fast boxers can lean out the way of a punch, the instinct is to turn away or duck, but staring right at it while it tickles your nose takes skill and courage!

You just get a feel for their range. Their fist can only move so far from their torso. One of my friends from high school trained with me for about 2 years. We'd always partner up at least once in class. I knew his range well enough that I could let him throw a punch at a given distance, stand still, and he would lightly touch my nose with the end of his glove. Frustrated the hell out of him

One tip that helped me learn effective leans or pulls is to not just "lean back" but to also push my knees forward as I lean back. Kind of as tho I'm pivoting my weight around a horizontal bar at my hips. As I go back with my upper portion while my lower portion goes forward. This keeps the center of gravity in place in the middle. Theres a kick boxer who has mastered this and can literally go completely horizontal but I forget his name.. Anyway, I call it the "pivot lean" or "pivot pull"🙂 It the same principle as doing the "limbo"

Look any slip or lean back, sometimes it works sometimes it does not. You make adjustments througout the fight. Mayweather also counters very well be leaning back. You cannot just fight with total defence, every move has a strength and weakness.

4:21, yes Muhammad Ali is more square, but I think in that one photo, it’s more so to avoid that big looping left hand hand that was just thrown. Yes, Ali often was squared when he pulled back, but in many cases, he was also bladed, especially when circling to the left with his butterfly circling footwork. But in that specific photo, I’m taking a page from Canelo’s book here, Canelo likes to pull back whilst turning his head to the left to let the left hook fly past him. I just stood up and tried this, and yeah! If you do the pull back like how you explained in this video, but ALSO turn your head to the left to roll with the left hook (or in Canelo’s case, the left hook doesn’t even touch him), then your body naturally becomes more square and more waist/lower back focused and yeah… hurts my back too mate! I wonder how these guys did it… 🤔 I was experimenting with a neutral or even a more posterior pelvic tilt, and that seemed to help prevent the pain, but still not a resounding answer of how these guys did it without lower back pain.

I always wanted to progress into heavyweight, because i was sick from making diet. My trainer told me i am to small for a good heavyweight. I said, Mike Tyson is even smaller than me. My trainer said, yeah, you are not Mike Tyson. Same with the lean bag: but Toni, Muhammed Ali and Roy Jones Jr leaned back like that. Well, yeah, you are neither Ali nor Roy. So listen to Toni here...

It is about flexibility, some guys are more flexible and can come back quick due to practice, those far lean backs are timed due to the reach of the opponent trying to hit you.

Wrong about keeping the hands up, hands down is for balance and helps to come back up. Hands up makes it easier for the other guy to touch the gloves. You can keep the back hand up. Also if you have confidence in your timing no reason to keep the hands up. Thing is you have an idea of what pattern your opponent is going to throw. Look at mayweather.
