Or even the bad decisions of parents. It took me until age 30 to get out of my Low-Income/parents did not care/Welfare mindset that I was raised with. I looked at the world WAY different than those raised in a good home and then I finally realized I was a victim only in my mind.

Its such a short and unreasonable claim to make so you can just easily write someone off in your mind, convince yourself of that so you now can just discredit everything he says because he may have ideas that go against yours. Not every word he says is true, and I can understand your annoyance with seeing how people seemingly worship the man. I would consider myself a fan of his work, but I do see it odd how people hold him to a standard of a prophet, thats a little much. I sure saw that when I went to work for a state agency (briefly): it was a collection of creeps and slackers, who accomplished almost nothing, day after day. The warehouse was a total mess, and it was very difficult to find anything. I offered to organize it. The boss said to go ahead. I figured everyone would appreciate it, but instead they seemed to hate me for it. The boss even said to me "nobody cares" to try to discourage me. And many other similar things happened. They simply did *not* want to improve, even when someone was handing it to them. I quit after 2 months. What a hell hole.

I've learned that freewill in itself is the greatest gift and greatest responsibility we can have. Choosing to exercise freewill means growth and discomfort. However, we can also surrender our freewill to fear. Fear in itself is an entity that will convince you to avoid what is difficult and to stay in safety and comfort. What fear does to the soul is quite impressive: it subjugates the soul to immediate comforts and pleasures, in exchange for parts of the soul. Fear will imprison parts of the soul, convincing you that these parts are bad and they should be locked away - for your safety. The more you buy in to fears advice, the more agency it steals from you. Until ultimately, fear makes the self so paranoid of itself that it decides to imprison the soul voluntarily. And this behavior extends into the outside world, and how one interacts with others. Let me tell ya, freewill is not easy. It does not come easy. Freewill is something we cultivate and grow and nurture. True exercise of freewill means facing fear. It means taking your power back from a creature that has been stealing it all your life.

That last part really hit home for me. In my little life I've been dealing with a very manipulative boss. He is very slimy and has swept many important safety and personnel issues under the rug to avoid making himself look bad to his boss. My coworkers all feel similarly but no one will speak up because, on the surface level, he's a friendly guy. He'd rather be our "friend" than our boss. But a friend that wouldn't hesitate to toss any one of us under a bus if we spoke out against him. The workplace has become so toxic in the last couple years that accidents and fights are becoming fairly common. A work friend of mine was just accosted by another co-worker, and directly threatened with violence. My work friend reported it to the boss who immediately said he'd "already talked to (his) boss about it and it was taken care of. Now get along." My work friend didn't like that and called the office himself. Now he's waiting on the big boss to come and get the story from him. Big boss hadn't heard a word about the situation, big shock. Our "friend" boss came to tell my work friend that, if he didn't say that the issue was taken care of, he was going to be fired. Now the friend is afraid to tell the story because he "needs this job". The whole situation reminds me of some of the tales Solzhenitsyn told of the ol Soviet Union. It's completely sickening, but could be addressed if we start speaking up for ourselves and what's right.

I've had the specific familial problems JP talks about. This exact situation. First, it was with diet and personal health when I was 14 and later it was with our yard. You would not believe how upset my father was that I began grooming our yard so it looked nice (it was completely overgrown and wildly out of control). You would think I had gotten a girl pregnant while also stealing his heirloom watch for drug money - and I'm definitely not being hyperbolic. I'm definitely sure there are parents who were less upset about their kid failing a class than my pruning of the overhanging plants in the backyard. I know not everyone has to deal with that type of stuff but what JP is talking about, in reference to the Cain and Abel story within the household, was exactly what happened to me. I forgive my father for actively trying to hurt me and hating me but it is nice to have a deeper understanding of the dynamics that were occurring.

@@viannarts Maybe hate is not the right word but I later found writings of his (it was a google search he made so I discovered it on accident) and he was searching for what to do when you deeply resent your son. I definitely agree that what you are describing is why he felt this way - but being highly neurotic can also describe Hitler (who viewed jews as "dirty" like a literal infection on the German people). I believe his main reason for resentment is that I am naturally confident. He wanted to see me suffer and accept my position as a loser just like him. I naturally fight against being "the loser" as much as I can. I still am this way; I would prefer death than acceptance of being a "loser". I have been a "loser" at times but I have certainly, without a doubt, ever given up my hope for a better future or acceptance of that. I definitely agree that those factors are causing his anger towards me but there is nothing I can do to rectify the situation. He does not want a relationship with me, he has disowned me from half of my family and my forgiveness (which I have done with genuine desire) does not change anything. I think most people who hate others are driven by factors such as the ones you have listed. That does not change the fact that the person feels and embraces the hatred.

@@joenichols3901Dear Joe, I understand your pain. "Hate" seems right, simply it's a defense mechanism as I've found that jealous fathers tend to hate (in part, among a mix of different feelings) their sons because of the mirror effect: "My son appears more top-dog/smart/nice/successful/free-thinking and the list goes on ....than me at something?!!! Not acceptable! What does that make of me?!!!" As you can see, it's all EGO... they are obsessed with themselves, and that's ugly as exhibited in their mean behaviour. They want to make you fall off from what they see as pedestal somehow. When it's about ego, it means they've got a long road ahead to get better and stop hating good people. One of them: become a good person themselves by implementing what's right whenever they feel they could. They would as a result stop wanting so badly what you have (goodness), jealousy would drop, and hate with it. They could instead grow they own charactere, and admire their son, and want to take a ride on their success. Jealous parents know very well that they are not perfect. They just would rather drag you downward with them than let you shine any light, because they don't want to walk any longer toward any light. They're too good for that already, you know....(sarcasm). In my experience, egocentric parents leave limited room for children to succeed: there's a threshold past which your success in life is somehow too uncomfortable to look at for them. I find them to be big babies (that you outgrow) who want your goodness (what you're good at), and do not want to work for it themselves.... Why not work at it? It is likely due to a lack of both courage and self confidence. Even though... on second thought... maybe it just boils down to courage. After all, aren't we all lacking confidence originally before any endeavour? Don't we build confidence through trying hard first? I think we do. If the endeavour is "become a better person each day", I doubt you'd be jealous of good people around you, even if they are better than you at some or many things. You'd be cheering! You are a good person. In my case, I find now that grew past where my dad is at in life, and instead of grabbing my hand, he chose to reject it out of pride, out of cheer laziness to turn himself toward betterment. This "I want that now!" jealous attitute shows as hate, hate for what they believe is too hard to get, hate for a son they wish they'd ressemble more. Hating here seems like attempting to fool yourself into thinking you do not want something you really want deep down. They want what you have. They don't see that they could just collaborate with you and all of a sudden they would become the lucky beneficiaries of your wisdom at whatever it is you're good at. So it seems like they also have a problem with the idea of collaborative work. They don't think they can benefit from the family being stronger together with your skillset added. Why is that? Are they so unused to the idea of sharing that they themselves do not expect it from others? I have found indeed such fathers to be quite the selfish type. A selfish guy will not expect what you have to be able to benefit them unless they themselves hold that power you have. They are wired to behave like jealous pricks because they are lazy, scared (not-courageous), non-sharing humans. What you exhibit as a quality, they see a something they lack in such a way that reveals their lack of ambition (they feel humuliated) and as a quality that they are not able to touch or benefit from (due to their close minded non-sharing attitude in life, they don't see your gift as a gift for the whole group). In a word, they would need to overcome SO MUCH to be able to grow a genuine and healthy appreciation for their son's success that only a miracle can make that happen. Hence, maybe, a need to set the bar of expectations pretty low for the likelyhood they'd eventually one day make a leap forward. Let's just say that them respecting their sons and loving them righ in the future is definitely not impossible... although it would be the equivalent of a flower blooming in the sahara desert on a rare occasion when the ground got wet. The water has to come from inside. They need to 1. want to be better fathers, 2. work at it for a while.

"Change yourself first" is nonsense. * My water filter went bad, causing me to want to change the world (so I wouldn't cough each time I drank water from it) * Did I start by changing myself? No, I just bought a new filter. Easy problem, easy solution. * I could've actually tried changing myself: sleeping more each day to recover from the fact that I was constantly pouring new microorganisms down my throat causing a minor allergic reaction which was exhausting. But do you think changing myself was really the best solution to the problem there? Because it definitely wasn't. Now it's usually a good idea to _check_ whether changing ourselves would improve things. After all changing ourselves is much easier than changing reality. For example I think theists should change their beliefs about gods, because they can't just magically produce evidence of a god: so reality isn't changing, and reality fails to indicate a god exists, and that's a problem only for people who believe in gods. So the solution is to change our beliefs to match reality (rather than banging our heads against the wall to try to say something is true that we can't prove).

@@tonygoodkind7858 well, duh. External problems are external problems and you have to solve them. If I have a flat tire, it doesn't matter how much positive thinking I do, I'll still have a flat tire. So I wasn't saying that at all. That being said, taking initiative to solve external problems, especially ones that are caused by you, are scary or could be changed by you, will change you as a person no matter what. So it's not literally that you sit in a room meditating and the world around you magically changes. You meditate AND you go out and solve what you can, little by little. Dunno if you're against most of Peterson's individualist philosophy but it's funny how people always bash Peterson for the "clean your room" quote. They're taking it way too literally. If your goal is to start a business, for example, and your room is a disgusting mess, that's not a very good indicator of your future. So the idea really is start small, then work your way up.

@@tonygoodkind7858 well, it depends what you mean by "god". Most people view the idea of God under the same idea of "humanized" Greek gods, and obviously, if you view it like that then it's easy to say that God is a delusion. But the God theologists try to understand and "prove" (and also a good chunk of spiritual teachers and philosophers) is a whole different concept that I think is a lot more plausible than people give it credit for. It's not so much "big sky daddy disproves of you touching yourself" but more "we don't know why the Universe works the way it does but the more you analyze it the more a God makes sense."

@@somethi3741 Sure, but Peterson's overall "put your house in order first" mentality is what I assumed you were going for with "change yourself first", and hopefully you agree that's quite a lot different than the minor changes I needed to make to myself to (a) consider your responses, and (b) type a reply. Both those quotes imply quite a lot more than minor changes. In fact Peterson often brings it up as a way to suggest that people who _are_ taking actions shouldn't be taking them! You don't have to repeat Peterson's fundamental dishonesty of asking the definition to common words whose definitions are well-known. The two main definitions of "god" are known, and we don't have evidence either of them matches any part of reality. Unknowns don't prove we know a god is involved. They only prove we don't know those things. What about the things we do know? Well none of them involve or require a god. So neither the knowns nor unknowns indicate a god, and it's intellectually dishonest to say otherwise.

I love this conversation so much. One of my favorite lines: "People suck -- is the claim that Marxism makes -- but the only way to cure people of sucking is by changing the entire system, which will, in some magical fashion transform the nature of humanity ... The claim that _you're_ making (and I hope that I'm making, as well) is that human beings *do* suck unless they decide to stop sucking ... And your whole goal is to tell people exactly how it is that they can clean up their rooms, as the famous phrase goes."

@@Stereotype23 No, the statement is that Marx says people support capitalism for negative reasons, hence Ben shortens that down to "people suck." Your logic doesn't follow.

@@galaxyofreesesking2124 Just read Marx Capital please instead of inventing a straw man you can feel superior to. Greed is not relevant to the analysis. Capitalism as a system forces us into classes where the workers - proletariat - has to sell their labor to survive. Capitalists are not inherently greedy or evil they are just the ones that benefit for being on top the economic system by owning the means of production. Marx focus is on the system. Not on people being greedy or evil or whatever other quality you might think is inherent to them.

the reason it is so hard is that it's both, some things are determined and some are dependent on you or someone else choices. Here is the example if you can remember a time when you did something because you believe that you had no choice (even if looking back you can see you did) those moments are deterministic, as well as all the actions you take without making a conscious choice to do it, everything else is free will.

Man such a blast from the past, in a good way. Jordan & Ben were two (of many) thinkers/commentators who really helped to reshape my outlook to the world in my early 20's. I still find myself going back to the old stuff an uncovering new treasures. What JP is talking about here with cleaning your room is so true. During that reshaping period in my early 20's I was in University and lived in a house with 3 other guys who were some of my closest friends at the time. As I started listening and starting to pull my life together ( I was a pretty sorry son of a bitch at that point) I began cleaning my room in a myriad of ways. My friends were the party hard types who would day drink hard and all the rest of it, and I did my share of that too, but then I began pulling away. Tell you what, the venom I got from of my 'friends' was eye opening. I truly believe there are some people that when they are on their way down will do everything in their power to tear everyone else down around them with them. Eventually I had to guy ties with most of them. It was really hard thing to do, but it has paid massive return on investment in terms of my personal mental and spiritual health. I do not hate them, for the most part I feel sorry for them, and some of them have come out the other side and are doing much better now. I learned you have to secure your own life preserver first and be ready to cut away the dead weight when it isn't helping you strive to be the best version of yourself.

Living with, or amongst people, who are orderly as their pattern of living is far easier than with those who are not. To be orderly is one’s our greatest personal assignments and is by which we evaluate, engage and test every relationship. Each one of us MUST personally self-develop and demonstrate it is in our nature, a proven prevailing value, as it is a character quality we become known by in-and-outside the walls of our home. Without this foundational spiritual wisdom there is chaos. Everyday it is tested, and in the midst of cultural shifts we are witnessing a severe downgraded version of order; display and disposition of people. Disorder has become the prevalent representation we are observing throughout social media, and by the repetition of viewing an undisciplined society (wreckage viewpoints) it’s become a tactical teaching tool for furtherance of ill-equipped and wrought behaviors. The continuing overconsumption of such kool-aid is not a renewing device but instead a ploy to deaden virtues, hence societal unrest and plethora of disorders. The great deceiver, decorated souls, are consuming a condition we’ve long taken for granted… healthy minds. The deprivation is why we see countries foundational fabric of the family, community, governments, and every single societal benefit crumbling, as we’re no longer living together with righteousness, citizenship, virtues, servanthood and common decency. Proverbs 10:23 / The Voice 23 Mischief is the sport of fools,
but wise actions bring joy to a person with insight.

And to top it all off he tells you how to get the process going no matter what stage you are on your life journey. It’s remarkable, the way he has inserted himself into the fabric of society in a way that has positive impact on people who need guidance but in a way that instills them with the correct belief systems. I’ve never been forced to think or believe any kind of way. Jordan has articulated every single iota of information for me to make up my own mind. And I choose his path. Because I wanna take care of my family, I wanna protect my community and then we will see if I am able to contribute positively. Bc the last thing I’ll mention is that.
