Holy cow!! OMG... you guys are the luckiest tourist ever. I've driven through that highway a couple of times but never got that luck. Passing through a herd of sheeps and road-blocked by a street-gang of cows were the only highlight in my 'wild'-life so far.. 🤣

for me,encountering an elephant in the wild ,seeing,experiencing what u did is equivalent to seeing a live shark in water (maybe exaggerated ,but thats how i think i feels) .. scared,excited,in awe,feeling the majestic of the animal is just different in the zoo.. its really lucky u got to experience it while traveling..

Thanks for worrying about us, we aren’t as close as it perhaps seems in the footage, I’m using the zoom on my camera and there is a ditch and fence between us and the car is running so we can leave quickly if we needed to. Still can’t believe how close they were though! It’s an experience we’ll never forget

Third vlog I've watched in a row. The wild elephants was epic - cute baby, The rain didn't seem to phase you. That is sad re rubbish strewn on paths. Some of our Texas beaches are strewn with litter, that's gone in morning with tide. Breaks my heart. But, aside from that another great video.

I have seen so absolutely incredible photos of elephants sleeping where the adults all sort of lay in a circle with the babies in the middle, they are incredible creatures

You guys definitely lucky, such encounters with wild elephants are rare..but you guys parked too close, please keep a safe distance 👌 tropical islands at the east coast of Malaysia are beautiful

So amazingly lucky 🤩 thanks so much for worrying about us, but we were a fair bit further from them than it seems in the footage, the camera was zoomed in and there is a big ditch and railing inbetween us we were careful to stay still and quiet so as to disturb them as little as possible and stayed in the car so we could leave quickly if needed. The islands were magical 😍

She was definitely telling us to stay where we were! We kept as still and quiet as possible and we were really lucky with where we saw them as there was a big ditch and railing between us. I know it wouldn’t have stopped them if they decided to charge us but as we were in the car it would have hopefully slowed them down enough for us to get away.

We still can’t quite believe it!! So incredibly lucky, it’s something that will stay with us for our whole life! We’ve watched the footage over and over again and it is just as mind blowing every time! How amazing is the elephant squashing the railing so the littlest one can get over!! And that the others came back to help. We love them so much!

I travel using Lebuhraya Timur Barat frequently. Encountering elephants is a pretty common occurance, especially at nights. Please, do NOT stop. They can be unpredictable.

Infrastructure decay happens in Malaysia mainly due to the fact that there is a duality in the administration of the tourism industry between the federal and the state government. Most of the funding for infrastructure development comes from the federal government while the maintenance and marketing are done by the state. Prior to 2018 when Malaysia was governed by a single powerful ruling coalition parties, the coordination of policies and implementation especially in tourism were pretty smooth and streamlined across the federal and state levels. However after the fall of that single powerful party during the GE16 after 60 years in power, the new and subsequent coalition governments struggle to devise comprehensive and holistic plans for the country’s and state’s tourism sector as the competing political parties try to aggressively hold onto whatever power and influence they have left at both at the federal and state levels. Consequently, the funding, policies, planning and implementation are often mismatched which eventually lead to inefficient funding distribution, ineffective marketing strategies etc. There’s also a divide among the powers that be and the general population who live in the west coast versus those who live in the east coast…that’s why you rarely see any travel agencies located in the west coast which promotes tourist attractions located in the east coast

Thanks so much for that information, it’s really interesting. It’s so sad when the need for power overruns the needs of a place and it’s people. We have issues in England with discrepancies between local and regional governments too, things like our rubbish tips are run by regional governments who continually make it harder and more expensive to dispose of rubbish appropriately and local governments are then the ones who have to deal with the resulting illegal dumping of waste as they have separate responsibilities. Also interesting what you say about the differences in the East and West of the country. We have noticed that there is a difference too but been unable to quantify what that is.

​@@truebluetravellers If you observe carefully the East coast of peninsular (Kelantan, Pahang, Terengganu) is less developed, less industrialized and the road maintenance and quality is a bit dodgy. Compare that to the West states (Penang, Perak, Selangor, Malacca, Johor)

We have noticed some differences like this but we also felt that there was perhaps more of a traditional Malay influence on the east coast too? A lot more signs were in Malay, there was more traditional homes, more Malaysian restaurants. It is still very multicultural but we just noticed this in a few places.

@@truebluetravellers Yeah it’s pretty much the same here too. There are local governments which perform better than the other despite the politics. In the end it’s all about the attitude of the local populace etc. If you happen to stop by the town of Kuantan for example you’ll stark improvements in terms of infrastructure and cleanliness compared to other east coast towns. Kuantan folks are known for their willingness to let their grievances known. That scares the sh*t out of the local of the local authorities

Me and my hubby always pray not to encounter wild elephants whenever we have to travel in remote jungle in pahang. Seeing their poodungs by the roadside already makes me sweating profusely. What more to see them passing by. U guys are so brave

Absolutely ❤️ we have been blown away by the friendliness and kindness of the Malaysian people.

Guys, if you see them, just drive away if they are not in the middle of road, if they have babies, they get aggressive. Particularly the bull one, they known to attack car,s if they are on the road crosding, do not honk and let them cros the road first. If they charged at you while in car, reverse and retreat for a while.

We were so lucky to see them but also lucky with the exact point in the road where we saw them, it doesn’t show very clearly in the video but there is a big ditch and railing between us, we stayed in the car as quiet and still as possible but ready to drive off if we needed too. We have seen lots of videos of cars being flipped over by elephants so were cautious and wanted to be respectful.

That part of Perhentian will be developed into high end Resort and soon to be only private entry

In the north and east coast there are many chinese with roots in thailand, hence chinese-thai food. Like someone else said, I'd recommend Sabah too for islands and especially the waterfalls. I'm planning a Sabah trip to visit every major waterfall and the hot springs.

What blew our mind was how clever they were problem solving and working together to get the baby one over the barrier. They are just the most incredible and beautiful animals 😍

There is an elephant conservation in pahang, if you want to get up close and personal. Went there when i go for a camp. Got to attend an elephant wedding with nasi minyak and everything.

Mulu cave the second largest cave in the world. Maliau Basin the Sabah's lost world. And mount Kinabalu the highest spot in South East Asia. That road not only have elephants sometimes you can also see tigers....but mostly at night though...and also wild pigs. Just dont stop when you see wild pigs, they are more dangerous than elephants or tigers lol, they literally kill more people in Malaysia than tigers.

Yes it’s a world wide problem, we saw it in Australia too. We found that the corals in the deeper water were less affected, they are less likely to be touched there too.

I had the same sentiments with the wind turbines, the rubbish and the dilapidated structures. What a shame! I totally agree. Most Malaysians do agree. We are good at building things but very bad at maintaining. Anyway, the country was recessed to a poor state 6-7 years back due to slumming economic and massive corruption by a political leader leaving most maintenance and national budgets being cut or siphoned by corruption. So it’s a problem nationwide. I’ve had the chance to hike Perhentian and wondered what had happened to the turbines too! A wasted beauty! That spot was really a scenic part of the island. So, yes you are disheartened and we are embarrassed! On another note, wild elephants are a thing of beauty. I wish not to see them and see them at the same time.. There are excitements whenever my friends and I spot their fresh dungs on some of our hikes, but there’s always the fear that comes with it, if we ever run into them on close encounter. On our last hike, we ran into a black panther. Luckily, only our guide at the front came face to face with the beast and alerted everyone at the back to stay back and regroup.

It’s so sad that it seems the world over when some people are given the opportunity to be leaders they choose to serve themselves rather than their country, Wow, incredible, to see a black panther in the wild would be truly amazing and terrifying at the same time your so right about the elephants, we were glad we were in the car rather than on foot 😂😂

Did u guys tried the bak kut teh at the Chinatown? It’s a herbal pork soup stuffs.. it’s recommended to try it.. it’s like Malaysia’s Chinese national dish.. 😂😂😂

A definitely fascinating video. The sequence where you come across wild elephants in the middle of the road is the best one in your video. The elephant is one of Malaysia's protected and national animals, along with the Malayan tiger. It's great that you brought up about the rubbish and dirtiness of the place, which is a blight on many visitor destinations, especially on the island. Hopefully they will keep the area clean and maintain them orderly if they still want people to come.

@@truebluetravellers - Actually, I've never travelled on that highway, but I've heard that when it was first constructed, tigers could even be seen roaming in the centre of the road. It used to be a jungle and is actually located in an isolated place between west and east of peninsular of Malaysia. The route is only open during the day light; I am not sure of their nighttime closing policy now. In the early years of Malaya, elephants were used as a form of transportation. In those days, owning an elephant was equivalent to today's of owning a car, therefore the more elephants you had, the more cars you had. I notice that you have many viewers who are following your vlogs here, including myself, so keep posting them to share your interesting experience with us.

In the early 80s, we can't use the highway at night, yes....but it is not just because of the wildlife but threats of the communist (you can findl police/arny outposts several km apart during those years)

@@ashtriana1 - Today, the threat posed by communism is non-existent. It would be beneficial to know if police posts are still stationed along the highway in case of emergencies. Since the highway is actually rather remote, nobody can come to your aid in case of need, especially at night. Just how is the highway now accessible at night?

There also have wild tiger and wild black panther wandering around...pls be caution.

They tried to build two wind turbines up the hill as you can see, but after spending 12million ringgit, they found out the wind is not strong enough to turn it like the North Sea in UK! Brilliant engineering.

@True Blue Travellers that was why the pier and walkways were abandoned. It was suppose to facilitate maintenance of the wind turbines. Oh well there goes my 12 million tax money. Should hv used solar panels. We have plenty of sunlight!!

@@laramiaizz we had an amazing time on the island and did actually try to film a section about the rubbish and infrastructure (which is where the clips are from) but we kept getting tongue tied and only had a short time on the island so decided to spend our time enjoying the good parts of the island and talk about it afterwards when we’d had a chance to think through our thoughts on it rather than spending the little time we had doing a million takes not sure of what we wanted to say about it. We loved the island while we were there and still love it now, it’s just an observation we made.

beware of signage a long the road. its not joke if the signage show about elephant or crocodile area, even the signage of cow/cattle its mean the villages just let theirs just free around the area

Aren’t they just incredible! We are a bit further away than it perhaps looks and luckily there is a ditch and railing between us, not that it would have stopped them if they wanted us gone but it might have slowed them down enough for us to drive away!

The alpha male is very protective. Sometime its very aggressive. So that was a bad call to just atop and wait so close to them. Had he been in a bad mood, its unimaginable what could happen to you guys. Eleephants when they really pissed off, they tear down even houses.

If you see the elephants, Leave them alone, keep your distance, drive away slowly, never feed them. They can be dangerous, if they are frightened or sick, they can crush your car, no joke. If you are very very very very lucky, you could see tiger.

Thanks for worrying for us, we were further than it perhaps looks in the video as I used the zoom on my camera, we were also very luck where we saw them that there was a ditch and a fence between us. I’m sure it wouldnt have stopped them but it might have slowed them down. We stayed in the car ready to drive off if we needed to and stayed as still and quiet as we could to try not to scare them. We have seen some videos of cars being flipped and trampled but tried to be as safe and respectful as possible while marvelling at their incredible beauty 🥰

@@truebluetravellers , you are blessed to be able to see the baby elephants. Not many has the chance. On the other hand, There has been cases of car crashed into elephant, which is very unfortunate. That is the purpose of the sign boards along the road.

The Tourism Minister should see this. What a shame even for Malaysians.

Five years ago, my family and I were in a Langkawi posh resort - we had to swat flies over dinner and looking closely you see rampant trashy huts and broken pavements everywhere. This island is supposed to be the higher end destination.

It is true what they say. They build things with capex funds, no opex funds. Because they will replace new later. Bloody mentality ! Also opex funds may be 'eaten' by corruption.

Perhentian Island is under the jurisdiction of the district of Besut in the state of Terengganu. Oh well... I guess the district council's priority now is the well being of its keropok lekor. 😁😁😅 But fret not guys.. I'm gonna run in the next election... and I'll lobby to be the next minister of tourism. I'll clean the crap out of those district officers. Just make sure that you'll come back to check out what a good job I have done. 🤩🤩

Have to wonder how many elephants get hit by cars...here in parts of Canada deer are hit all the time on highways. Hitting an elephant though would probably end badly for everyone involved.😢

A road accident with adult buffalo alone will make sure even a SUV will completely totally damage and a driver with passengers are in between seriously badly injured or death even on speed of 60km/h!

@@ophirbactrius8285 It’s horrible isn’t it, there are lots of accidents with deer and badgers in the UK and lots and lots with Kangeroos in Australia, in the north there are also often accidents with cows. It’s very dangerous and I feel so sorry for the animals, we try not to drive at night in remote areas if we can but it’s not always possible

​@@truebluetravellers To make it more horrible, a buffalo colour at night almost similar to road colour background. Its seems like a perfect camouflage for a buffalo when walking on the road at night. 😬😬 Awww that's really cute! I never know that England also have bagder before😍😍 but its so sadly for poor badger unconsciously walking on road at the wrong time and wrong place maybe just because its seeking for foods. 😢😭

I really do not understand why the Malaysian government does not make it a requirement for the animal crossing to be built across roads or highways in the forest just like they do in Thailand. You find a lot of cases where wild animals were hit by vehicles

It is so sad seeing animals injured in these situations, breaks our heart, we have been Worried about seeing this and so glad that we haven’t. The footage of the elephants crossing the road isn’t very good because I was so nervous that the baby elephant would get hurt when they were trying to help him under/ over the railing that I kept dropping the camera but luckily they all got across safely.

The highway from Seremban to Port Dickson have 2 bridges for wild animals to cross.

it is advisable not to park your car so close to the elephant....they are wild animals and they are unpredictable...they easily might flips your car if they think both of you are a threat to them..

Thanks very much for the advice and for caring about our safety, you can’t see it very well in the video but there’s actually quite a deep ditch between us and the elephants and a railing, we stayed in the car with the engine running so we shoot off quickly if we needed to and stayed still and quiet to try not to scare them.

Be careful...its not adviceable to stop and watch wild elephant from short distance in Malaysia. Many people were harm by this elephant or yourcar can get smash by them especially at night.😮😮😮😮

While I know it wouldn’t have stopped them if they did decide to charge us we would have hopefully had time to get away as we stayed in the car.
