I am half japanese - half taiwanese, my father brought our family to Malaysia for work purposes so i have been here since i was 7, I spoke Japanese and Chinese when i first arrived now I have learned how to speak Malay and English. What makes me really surprised is that the chinese here even after living here for decades, masih tidak fasih dalam Bahasa Melayu. Some of them dont even know chinese at all which is really sad to me as a half chinese person.

I’m Japanese born in Okinawa but living in Kota Kinabalu Sabah since my age 6 until 19 and after live in Kuala Lumpur since 19 till my age now 38. My Bahasa still has Sabahan slang but I can talk KL slang not bad. Never back to Japan just stay here in KL. Even I just be able to talk Japanese not fluently.

Malay is one of the easiest languages to learn and master. I am half-Malay who was not born in Malaysia, but I could speak, read and write the language fluently. I was surprised that there are many Malaysians of other descent who live in Malaysia, especially the Chinese, who still cannot speak the language properly. @Aaron Sebastian Dutch is not very useful outside of the Netherlands either, but every Dutch, including the migrants, could speak the language properly. In fact, the “international uselessness” is applicable to almost every language except for English, French, Spanish, Arabic, and probably Mandarin, but that is not the excuse for the citizen of the respective countries not to learn to speak their national language properly. It is a matter of national pride.

I am a Malaysian Chinese, born and raised in Melaka. I’ve seen a few comments stating that many Malaysians are not fluent in the Malay language and I just want to elaborate on that. In many cities, we have different types of schools, chinese based, tamil based and malay based too. In said schools, most of them don’t speak malay all that much. For example, in a chinese-based school SJK(C), their primary language is mandarin and they do study bahasa ofc but they don’t speak it all that much(according to my friends). However, they tend to have very good written skills and their karangan most of the time are tip-top as they are kiasu and knowing their spoken bahasa isn’t that good. For me, I was in a kebangsaan (government) school all my life with the majority race being malay then chinese and then the indians. There are some of the minority groups too but not that many. And in my school, our main spoken language was English. Yes, we speak English 90% of the time with ALL races (also because my school was a convent school so yeah, just wanted to clarify that) Including with our malay teachers and malay friends too. I would say that I am quite fluent in both my written and speaking skills. Then, as far as I know for the chinese, some states are well-known for speaking a certain type of dialect. For example, from where I’m from, Hokkien is our main dialect so we have that thing where “every malaccan has to know hokkien” that kinda thing. Then for KL, cantonese is the main dialect like from where my father was born. Penang is also well-known for Hokkien but theirs is different compared to ours in Melaka and most of the time, I can’t quite understand it due to the pronunciation and changes in certain words. Don’t get me wrong, we have many MANY dialects(hakka, teochew, hainanese, etc…) in each state but I’m just pointing out the main one just to give an example. All in all, as a Malaysian I just want to clarify that many Malaysians can speak Malay just fine, just enough for a basic communication but don’t expect some high-level speech as not everyone has the same type of education. Some people I know who went to international schools can’t speak basic malay although they’re Malaysian themselves as their education is solely focused in English taught by foreign teachers. They rarely speak malay since they one, couldn’t speak it well or two, they just don’t want to embarrass themselves. Sometimes, I’ll be shaky too when speaking malay with my malay colleagues, however we all get along just fine😊 p/s: Many chinese people from Kelantan, Kedah, Perak like from the northern part of Malaysia and also from Sabah and Sarawak, can speak AWESOME and FLUENT bahasa melayu. So, again it all comes down to the type of education and the people they mix with.

Hello, same, Malaysian chinese here. My spoken malay is fine. Heck, everyone i know speaks malay well, or decent enough to get by. Does not speaking malay with slang means we are not fasih? If so then thats a low blow and truly unfair to judge. Honestly, i dont think ive met a malaysian who doesnt speak malay. I think most people say “oh BM saya tak tak bagus” to be humble. Does this mean we should crucify them? Language is something you need to use often for it to stick and be fluent. If you don’t use it often then it’s understandable if it gets rusty. Lets be kind and patient with each other okay? ☺️

⁠​⁠​⁠​⁠@@jackinthebox9161you're suggesting a nuclear option for a problem that has many solutions, we could increase use and proficiency of bm thru positive means, introduce more malay teachers and students, encourage teachers and students to speak and/or incorporate malay to every subjects, much like how sekolah kebangsaan encouraged use of english by teaching bilingually in english and bm.

I lived in Malaysia for 5 years and I think it's fairly easy to learn the language. They don't have different words for different tenses like we do in English, you only need to add prefix or suffix and you basically master the whole language!

That is a given in households that are normal and stable. Dad the authoritarian diciplinarian, mom the loving compasionate counter balance. The idea of equality as defined by modern feminism is a social construct as opossed to the more traditional definition where males and females have an important role as part of a family and society. The west is just waking up to the reality and effects of children brought up in predominantly single parent families. Not to mention how modern feminist over 45 are increasingly realising they got sold to the idea of being empowered without understanding what was the cost to them in exchange of that empowerment. Waking up alone, growing older without the joys of a partner, family or kids like most around them in exchange for a career and financial freedom. Suddenly it hits them. And the best part? They cant undo the mistake or avoid paying the hidden cost. The effects on society is young men who are lost on how to be a man because they were raised by a single mom. 80 over percent of their prison population were from single mom households. Boys and girls who are confused whether they are a boy or a girl. General breakdown in behaviour where individuals eo not know what is respect be it towards others or authority. The cuddled kids grow up thinking they, their needs and what they want is the only thing that matters while batshit blind to the fact others have wants and needs too. List can go on and on. That is why after travelling, working and living in other modern first world countries I choose to come back to Malaysia and I often tell people who compare Malaysia with South Korea or Singapore to be very careful what they wish for. Negara Maju is not all about an advance economy that is efficient, clean, safe, corruption free zones where every citizen is economically well off which accords them choices in life. No doubt negara maju is beter than living in abject poverty. Its just that negara maju is the worst among the rest that are just a little north of after abject poverty.

Malaysian second kampung is London 😆. If a Malaysian travels for the first time abroad, a very good chance they will go either to Saudi Arabia for Hajj/Umrah or to London. Singapore is not considered abroad btw 😂

Yes. I’ve been to Perth. It’s the first choice of destinations for many when it comes to visiting Australia. I think it is because the variety of things to see, as well as the availability of halal cuisines, making it easy for travel agencies and ground operators to draw good overall wholesome experience of being in Australia. Love the park and wild life.

I think it's more about the cheaper flights and Malay communities already established in Western Australia. Halal cuisines, there are more halal options in Sydney and Melbourne than the whole of Western Australia. Just that, the cuisines are more diverse, from Afghan to Turkish to Bosnians to Lebanese to Uzbek to Indonesian. . Regardless, when you visit to Australia, please please don't just stay in the city. Please explore the suburbs. Please explore the regional areas. Once you have experienced them, you'll never ever want to stay in the city for more than 3 days. This is me saying to prospective travelers, not to you specifically, since you have seen Australia.

@@muhammadmd2148 I forgot that cheap flights are probably the main factor to how popular Perth is to Malaysians. You’re absolutely right. Unless they have different goals to attain for travelling, specific place to visit and see, Perth is a good first choice if one wants to simply step in and experience Australia. Australia is a vast country with only cities are inhabited. Having the wildlife completely different from the rest of the world (due to Wallace line and continental shifts), I totally agree that tourists should visit the outskirts and explore more the Australia’s landscapes and nature.

@@tevikumares5022 haha u are everywhere in the comment section. just ignore bro these kind of people that want to divide our community bragging about language issues. for me malaysia is diverse country, everyone needs to learn malay and english language. but if u a chinese or indian study in vernakular school u have to learn 3 language. of course some people might have problem in term of fluency. so as a malay i kind of understand if a chinese having a difficulty to speak with me. so i will try to help him or her like changing to english or malay in chinese dialect. but some people will say "u're disgrace". living in diverse country we need to understand each other not like to divide people.

Malays are blessed by Allah swt because they stick so much to the Deen. They will play a huge role when the Muslim Worlds unites again for the next Khalifa insha'allah ta alaa.

The foreign spouse gets PR if the Malaysian spouse returns under the Talent Corp program, a friend just did that recently.

Malay language had been a lingua franca for the region. the informal version is easy to learn , u can mess up the grammar and people can still understand you. "duduk atas, atas duduk" means the same.

Haha Max - you know we love Nordin. 1. I love the issue of women empowerment that was discussed by you and your guest. It is totally different from the western ideas. To the west, women empowerment is about leaving the family duties and into the corporate world or about having more voice (???). But it is the opposite in Malaysia or even most South East Asia, South Asia and Far East Asia even. The role of women in the household is extremely important (motherhood, wife-hood, grandmotherhood, sisterhood etc). If you look at any good traditional, conventional Malaysian family (Malay, Chinese, Indian or other races), the mother usually have a very strong voice in the management of the household. (If the father is the King, the mother is definitely the Prime Minister 😀). How else we get called Tiger-Mom eh ;-) ? So, it is quite sad to see some self acclaimed modern/liberal/trying-to-be-western Asian women to dismiss the local definition of women empowerment. 2. I know many non-Malaysian accuse Malaysian of being bad at receiving criticism but I think it depends on how it is being delivered. Many Malaysians are aware of their weaknesses and also admit that as a country, it has a lot of weaknesses. However they are also very dignified and proud (just imagine, it's a huge no-no to touch someone else's head in Malaysia). So criticism should be delivered with diplomacy, respect and grace. I think Nordin (with his maturity, eloquence and tact), can do that and would love to have his views on this. Thanks for this video Max.

Couldn't agree more, by befriending Malaysian a visitor will get access to all the hidden gems of Malaysia. For example, it's the harvest month in Sabah and at the end of the month the state will celebrate Tadau Kaamatan, the big day of harvest festival. That is not promoted anywhere by the tourism and only known among locals.

Melayu yg kena hantar ke sekolah antarabangsa dan acah2 mat salleh speaking omputeh kat rumah sampai sepatah melayu pun tak pandai tu apesal tak bising tu? Korang ingat setiap negeri sama loghat ke? Sama pelat ke? Korang ingat makan cili auto boleh cakap melayu ke? Korang yg tak nak asimilasi ngan dorang apesal tu? Sengaja nak menegakkan benang yg basah korang tu.

That PR thing is true. My father experienced it. He's an Indonesia, who came here years ago for work and married my mom a citizen. He got his PR recently, only after almost 30 years. We went through lots of documentation of course, doing the same application over and over again, applying for VISA and renewing passport at the same time. Very hectic, but my father said that's the only way so he can stay with his family here in Malaysia.

Another reason why we talked a lot about food is because our weather is the same all year long. In other countries ive been to they like to talk about weather which is very rare in Malaysia.
