Land Rover Defender Camper Conversion Part 5:Our Overlander Build is Almost Complete!

We are so close we can almost taste it! The conversion of our Land Rover Defender into our dream overlanding rig is almost complete and we are absolutely stoked with how its looking. In this weeks episode we finally get our wheels back and at last our Landy can get moving! Her first trip out is to pick up our new roof rack, which we are really pleased with and means that we can get the surf board rack and solar set up made too. We get the work tops fixed in, water set up complete, draws and door fronts on and the upolstery sewn and in so the inside is now very nearly done. This weeks video also has two special treats, one is that we introduce you to a gorgeous new family member and the other... well lets just say the art of seduction isn't dead!!!!

Took an upright fridge to Morocco in 2008. Everything moved in transit over the Atlas Mountains, opened for a beer at the end of the hard days drive and 6 pints of milk leaked everywhere. Wasn’t happy. I then came back to the U.K. and purchase an ARB 47L. Best thing I ever bought.

We bought some baskets from The Range which fit perfectly in the shelves. This means nothing falls out of our 80 ltr upright fridge but also when you want to find something, you can lift the basket out and shut the door, keeping the cold in.

When fitting drawer fronts, stick some weight into the drawer to ensure that it is at the bottom of the runner (always a bit of slack play in them) then dry fit the fronts as you did, remove the front and stick a couple of strips of double sided carpet tape to the front of the drawer, reposition the front and press it on, then open the whole thing and screw through from the drawer side - saves you having to fill and repaint the drawer front 🙂 Why use filtered / cleaned water for the shower ? it will lessen the internal filter life

OOh that air riveter gets me every time !...... love the idea with the mounting point for the jack . However I would cover the working parts in some kind of heavy duty bag as where they are positioned they will get absolutely destroyed by road dust dirt. Highlifts can be lethal bits of kit if not used properly at the best of times . Last thing you want in an emergency is one gummed up with rust and dirt !

Toyo’s are fantastic - used to always run BF Goodrich in Africa and once we returned to the UK but last year there were supply issues and we couldn’t source any in the correct size (255/85R16) so after looking about the only ones we could find were Toyo’s. 20k miles later and I’m very happy with them. No appreciable difference in road noise, handling in wet etc., and off road they perform very well too. Plus they are significantly cheaper than the BF Goodrich’s - only time will tell if they have the same longevity. We have a 110 hardtop camper with pop-top so similar weight to you probably and we run 30 in the front and 38 in the rear. Off road we drop this to 20 and 25, or even down to 15 in each tyre in really sticky stuff. Really enjoying the build series. Keep it up.

Toyo open country tyres are very good, I run them on my series 2 Land Rover and my classic Range Rover, sticking close to original Land Rover size tyres ie 7.50 on steel rims is the best option, in some parts of the world you can't get oversized tyres but you can get 7.50x16 as it's very common size, those that run oversize tyres on alloy rims and "spacers" ( also ilegal in some countries ) find out too there cost, sometimes waiting weeks to get a tyre shipped to them, avoid joining the "Got all the gear and no idea club"... pressure on mine are 35psi can go up to 40psi if you're heavy.

Couple of thoughts on the stuff on the roof, how much weight has that added and is the pop top rated for it? Also what’s the height now? May cause issues on ferries or containers for shipping?

  • @truebluetravellers

Hi we have struggled to find an official rating for the roof, there is a rating of 50kg but that’s just for the cargo rails on the actual roof not a roof rack, we spoke to the dealers and again they couldn’t give us a figure, but they do sell uprated gas struts for the roof as most people fit more on them, we have uprated the gas struts now so it handles the load no problem, I’ve designed it so it will just fit in a high cube container but we don’t have any plans to ship in a container at the minute and ferries shouldn’t be a problem 👍

Thanks very much, it’s a bit of a long story but when we went to Australia earlier in the year we built a van to travel in and once we finished the trip we thought a 4x4 would of got us so many more and maybe better places which we couldn’t in a van and that got us thinking, which is the best vehicle for us, we had a mwb sprinter camper in the uk so knew what that was like, tried a hiace in oz, so thought why not build a few different vehicles and try them all out and see what we like best, so now we have finished the defender we are going to build a sprinter box van and use both of them for some epic trips away and see what we think, I keep trying to convince Jess for us to build a big overlanding truck but she’s not keen, might try a micro camper too, who knows, it’s just enjoyable and interesting to do and see what happens I guess 👍
