So.
The original line was, “If they give you ruled paper, write the other way.” As far as I can tell it’s Juan Ramón Jiménez’s.
I am also now painfully aware I've written a half as '2/1'. Sorry maths.
Please note that this wasn’t intended to be a diatribe against critics or experts. They obviously play an important role. It was more directed at the recreational cynicism one comes across in daily life from time to time, generally pointed at young artists. I have had the privilege to meet plenty of people 1000x more talented than me, who are simultaneously doubting their abilities because of some stupid comment made by an unpleasant teacher or jaded family member.
If you are that artist, I really just wanted to say: You’re in good company; the Greats doubted themselves too. Don’t let the bastards get you down and I hope you make all manner of interesting and fantastic things.
The music is the 3rd movement of Big Baus Brahms’ Violin Concerto in D Major: • Video
I like that piece lots. I hope you do too.
Again, all the very best of luck in your projects.

I'm 32 and just came home from a tutorial in my Masters at uni. Professor told me that my Master thesis idea was probably a little 'too esoteric' and 'perhaps not workable'. Maybe he's right and I won't find a teacher at uni who is willing to help me write this thing, but goddamnit if I can't make a master thesis out of it I will do this research on my own and write this thing and publish it my fucking self. And if all else fails I'll turn it into a youtube video series just because. *NEVER TELL ME THE ODDS, IT CAN BE DONE!*

I am rewatching this every time I get depressed or before important attempts like a dream job interview, and it works just amazingly perfectly. It gives me that calm yet excited feeling to try and believe in myself. That's art, I don't know what kind of art it is, it's not a book, movie, music, or picture, it's... all of that combined! It is 11 pm on a Saturday, 1 day spare until i have an exam i am most certainly going to fail and I just finished watching this Video. It is one of the rare ones on this channel that i just now noticed, when I checked, I had not seen. I remember watching my first Video on this Channel and showing it to a friend just about 6-8 years ago when i was 12-14 and showing it to a friend with whom I often talked about life and whatnot. We both unknowingly were heading straight for our first existential crises back then and as most people doing so also for our first unhealthy relationships with substances, not necessarily illegal onesand not instantaneously at that age (Our country has different laws than the us be said) Now, several idols-disappearing-after-scandals, worrying political developments, friendship-deaths and -births, life changes, … later I find myself again here on this channel and, although feeling like an entirely different person in some ways, in other ways it feels excruciatingly like nothing has changed. Nihilism, absurdism, therapy, … Life is so weird. Impressive job on being so relatable btw. I still wonder how some people manage to be consistently fine like how do use have thoughts but never have your world view crumble? Not the right place to put this considering that the internet never forgets and whatever but like who gives a skidoodle right? I kinda set out to be more poetic and coherent but honestly it wouldn’t have been authentic. I adore your ability to write such scripts, anyone’s ability to write anything really, without having arrived at a completely different conclusion whilst trying to put the initial one to paper. Took me an exam and 15 minutes of writing a comment to notice another existential crisis coming up. Fascinating. I could delete it but maybe someone will have fun reading this, on the off-chance that anyone ever does on a years-old video. In that case, hi, how are you? Tell me about your life right now if you feel like it.

Hey, I had fun reading it :). I also have a major exam in a couple of weeks, so just been studying. My first relationship ended a few weeks ago, and it's still bumming me out lol. Whenever I feel that way, I watch an exurb1a video. I also started to watch him doing my first existential crisis (had just lost my faith then). Writing is hard for me too, but I still do it. I'm not good at it, but I still do it... well sometimes. Maybe I'll get better, maybe I won't, won't stop me from trying. I guess we just have to keep at it no matter how bad we think we are lol How did your exam go btw?

If you're tempted to be "immortalized"; remembered by strangers for something you did, let me quell that desire for you with this simple statement. I sincerely appreciate my grandparents who are now gone and remember them fondly, while I can only know Isaac Newton as a name and a handful of factual accomplishments. Strangers will never remember you for you, just your name and what you did. The valuable stuff, the character and impression you leave on others, will eventually fade as they also do. For that sake, if you DO manage to accomplish anything significant, be sure to change your name by deed poll to something utterly ridiculous, so that future schoolkids will get a laugh out of it.

@@guyontheinternet6034 I think that those remarkable people who achieved the greatest things worth remembering from their lifetimes appear to have been motivated by innate curiosity and a drive of values. The desire to be remembered is not the right motivation to produce good outcomes because it is a selfish one. The desire to see technology improved, to investigate and explore the unknown, and to help others is often what leads to a worthwhile remembrance in the long term; and yes, so much of it all by accident. Instead of striving for our own immortalities, we should be striving for these things instead.

it has become my life goal to meet exurb1a in person. idk if you’ll ever read this Alex, but you have saved my life. i truly wish the best for you, and hope you keep making videos like this (and in general). they have become commonplace for me, and this video (along with many others) has changed the way i think about life and the challenges we must go through. Idk why i wrote so much, but I just wanted to say thank you.

No one's talking about how they're not feeling the usual existential crisis that comes after an exurb1a video? I will say, it was a pleasant surprise that i felt motivated and relieved, that someone could formulate and help me reflect on some thoughts of similar content, after watching the video. Thank you, i didn't know i needed this.

I sometimes think about suicide. I'm not depressed at all, I actually have by far the best time of my life right now and I'm generally happy, but at the same time I believe it doesn't matter that much. I could be dead and I wouldn't miss anything, because it's impossible to miss anything when you're dead. What contributes to this mindset is that I'm actually not afraid of death unlike majority of people. Sometimes I think it's better if my molecules bound to other living cells like plants, fungi, insects and animals, because I don't believe that I'm more special than plants etc. Living is good for yourself and a few other people, but death is better for a lot more other lives. But I'm relatively sure that I won't kill myself, not because I will regret it, since regret is impossible when you're dead, but because I regret right now that I want to loose the chance of raising a family and maybe getting famous for something that helps our future generations. But I'm not more special than my cat at the end of the day.
