I'm not even kidding I finally felt how NateIsLame when he experienced existential crisis. What I just experienced was the worst 5 minutes of my life. I don't want to die. I can't believe Micheal just let me feel like that. We are so small.

I used to work in IT security for a large company and another method used to wipe data from drives was degaussing. This was where an electromagnetic pulse was used to demagnetise the hard drive or tape, effectively wiping the data. Even this wasn't considered completely secure however and was usually just the first stage of the destruction process, with the degaussed drives then being shredded anyway. The disposal company we used could shred drives so the resulting scraps were only 2mm thick. This still doesn't technically mean that the data still couldn't be retrieved but even those enterprising people in Ghana would have a hard time extracting anything of value from those scraps. Of course, the less sexy but more practical method of data security was just to have a strict policy of forbidding any data containing customer or payment information to be stored locally on employee PCs, drastically reducing the amount of physical storage equipment that actually held sensitive data. I'll get in contact with my former colleagues and let them know that the heat death of the universe is also an effective method of data security.

Of course, and thank you for extra info. However, i think he meant that a fraction of the energy used for the action, is discarded away from its original and intended purpose. The energy being used for its purpose "looses" a part of itself, which becomes just energy.

Well yes, though energy is conserved, because of the gradual expansion of the universe eventually everything will reach a point where it cannot be heated or cooled anymore, or there will reach a point when the only energy is heat, at a quite diminished amount

But what if it doesn't delete them? What if future hackers from beyond the universe can deduce the location of the particles of the universe from our time through their current trajectories positions to recreate our universe at our time, and, from their, recover our lost files? You can't say it can't happen. For all we know, what we think of as time is just another spacial dimension for someone else. They can just walk over to our time period and take all our files regardless of whether we delete them or not. We're screwed.

I learned this by trying to recover the files, they simply get piled up still taking memory space until the system decides to rewrites the slot they were taking. So this made it almost impossible to recover deleted files from Drives that I use quite often, since using a drive requires usage of memory, writing/deleting data on top of where the files were.

  • @janzibansi9218

Deleting the file is just removing the file path. From a system point of view that makes lot of sense. Very few people would be willing to wait minutes until shred finishes 3 overwrites. This agresssive destruction will degrade the harddisk (+3 write cycles on those blocks). Just marking the blocks as available and overwrite them on demand adds just 1 write cycle

@@NeoCrypt01 You either didn't watch the video or did not understand it, or even better... don't want to understand it. Life is indeed meaningless, nothing changes that currently. Theoretically only a life that is immortal is not meaningless, but even that is probably meaningless alone. Ppl just like trying to give sense to something that is nonsense. Your video is just a perfect example for that... Your life is equal with the life of maximum 6 animals that live for 15 years. That's how meaningful your existence is. Fighting for your life is just natural, because deep down we all know that nonexistence before we born, not to mention the actual pain of dying so you can be nonexistent again. Everything will be forgotten, first try to understand that sentence.
