You're the One That I Want Bass Cover
www.buymeacoffee.com/TJH3113
Don’t give me a hard time, it’s a cool bass line!
"You're the One That I Want" is a song written by John Farrar for the 1978 film version of the musical Grease.
Who played the bass on it? There are 6 possible bass players credited - Mike Porcaro, William David Hungate, Max Bennett, David Allen Ryan, Wm. J. Bodine, Dean Cortez and Harold Cowart. My guess would be Dave Hungate because he was a super-clean pick player.
I just realized this is my first video with this bass that I got around my birthday back in September. The bass is a Spector Euro LX-35 with only 8 being made in this format and finish which is Ultra-amber over Poplar-burl with an ebony fretboard, Aguilar DCB-G3 p/u's (OB-2 preamp) and a 35" scale. I planned on putting a Spector HAZ pre-amp in it when I got it. Someone suggested doing a few videos with the bass “as is“ which seemed like a good idea. This way I’d have something to compare it to. This is the stock bass as I got it. I recently had the HAZ pre-amp installed, but I’m still not really happy with it. It seems that the pickups have too strong a voice to really be colored by the pre-amp. My next plan is to replace these pick-ups with EMG’s. An EMG-P4 (Precision Soapbar) and an EMGJ4-Reverse (Jazz Soapbar) in the neck and bridge positions, respectively. The ”Reverse J” means that the single coil is in the front of the pick-up, more toward the neck and away from the bridge. I’m hoping that this will bring the bass’ sound more toward that of a classic, P/J Spector.

Found this which was an answer from David Hungate himself. "You're the one that I want" was a '62 precision with Rotosounds and a pick. I was probably using my Versatone amp as well as a direct box”.

Thanks for the info. I pinned your comment so others will see it and spread the word. I think Jack Casady used to use a Versatone amp. It was a self-contained, bi-amp system or something like that.

This is such a good example of why learning parts to classic songs can be so beneficial to becoming a more complete musician. Some guys just want to "do their thing" and they're missing out on learning what makes a track work so well -- and in some cases why it become a hit. Not only does this song have that "fun as hell" catchy part, but it grooves really hard , yet never sounds forced. For that reason, there's a tendency to push and overplay it. You kept the relaxed nature while maintaining the drive. That's what makes it work so well.

Love, love, LOVE the extra 16th notes sprinkled throughout. Almost as much as the eye-roll after, "Feel your way..."

I usually don't add anything extra...sometimes at the end, but I don't remember doing any ad-libbing on this one. Haha, I believe the eye-roll was in reaction to my brain telling me to do one (wrong) thing and my hands just doing their own (correct) thing...close call.
One of my favorite bass lines. I was in a bass forum where they were talking with someone who had personal insight into the recording of this song and he said it was definitely Hungate that played on this track. I’d have to agree too. Well executed. What a fun part to play. You have very similar taste in your bass track selections. I’ve played most of the stuff in your vids.

Hey there Troy!!! I know it's been a lil while since I posted a comment onto your wonderful video's here, but WOW..........this one was GREAT!!! When I read the title of this one,I was like "Are You KIDDING ME? Has he LOST HIS MINE? " LOL. But every single time I've heard this song and listened to it,I never ONCE truly HEARD the actual "bass" line in it!!! Basically due to it sorta being drowned out in the mixing on the track and on the television/movie track of it as well. But listening to YOU play this one,WOW..........not only am I impressed with the bass-line,but it gives a whole new perspective to this song as well, because in all honesty,I never much cared for this tune, but NOW........I'm liking it!!! Seems like the biggest thing I see with bass players is playing wrong notes within a scale on a fast lick. Doesn't stand out to the layman but sounds like a dissonant to someone that recognizes it.
