Ex Muslim woman here. I never wore hijab outside of the mosque but my hijabi friends frequently suffered from hair loss due to traction alopecia and friction on the scalp. Our hair isn’t meant to handle the added stress and weight of fabric and occlusion on hair follicles. Many women also use more affordable fabrics like polyester that are even worse because they do not allow for breathability. This can lead to skin and scalp conditions that cause overgrowth of yeast and other organisms due to poor moisture wicking leading to rashes and increased body odor. Traction alopecia can become permanent if it’s chronic! One of my Muslim friends took off her hijab AT THE RECOMMENDATION OF HER DERMATOLOGIST for this reason and now her hair is healthier and luckily mostly grew back and hair line restored. If hijab was truly from Allah/god wouldn’t he have protected Muslim women from these consequences ?? 🤔

Afghani here. I ask myself, if god made an earth and he is able to decide where it is gonna be cold and where it is hot, why he didnt think about muslim women, who are exposed to superhot temparture, why he started exactly over there Islam? I thought he loved women? I mean if it would be a colder region in the middle east, it would be a total different discussion, because everybody is covered anyway. Yup - Umar is either a control freak or downright creepy. And my money's on the former. For heaven's sakes guys - accept what Allah gave you. It's how you use it that matters. AND it sounds like the "female tax" is worldwide - EVERYTHING costs more if you're a woman - haircuts, clothes, even our feminine protection is significantly overpriced for what it is.

Thank you for discussing this. The burden of 'modesty' seems to be unfairly placed on women when we are statistically more likely to not be able to afford it. Why does religion burden women instead calling out predatory men??? Oh wait, I know why...

Ex Muslim here... i just spoke yesterday with my friend whos living with me about islam and he is shia and i was sunni. We started to talk about Mohammed... and the hadiths and quran... and we talked about a lot of things and he questioned islam too.. (i havent outed myself clearly yet) and he was like... why does it say this and that... then we talked about Mohammed how he had the strength of 30 man... then i asked him does this sound like a Prophet to you? That has the strength of 30 man? Or does it sound like a sex maniac? Then he asked me "how many wifes did he had?" I said 11... as i know he was like no no he cant only 4 it must be in numbers! I said no i even know more then 4 by name... then he asked "how is this possible? Does the rules of Allah not apply to him? I said maybe cause hes a Prophet... anf he daid so what? Isnt he human like all of us? Why may he marry 11 wives and other muslims just 4? Ex muslimah and niqabi. Towards my leaving Salafiyyah i was getting upset with the prospect of needing to wear socks in salat. I couldn't comprehend any longer why would Allah put us women through this hardship. What if my garments aren't long enough, what if I don't have socks at the moment. I remember times where I covered my feet with random clothing in hopes that my Salat was accepted. It's funny how you should do salah in certain ways and if even a wrong positioning of your hand would make your salah unacceptable to Allah. My only question is why would you have worn clothes that were not acceptable for salah? Following Salafiyyah RA- you don't NEED socks, you just need to ensure your feet are covered. And if you were of the Salafiyyah RA, then all your clothes would have followed the hadith on extending the length of the womens' garment to drag a bit on the ground, thus being long enough to cover your feet. And at home you could have just owned a prayer jilbab. You made things harder for yourself, it seems. The conditions are not even difficult. They are pretty simple. Allah didn't give up on you- you gave up on yourself. -Revert and studying to become a sheikha

From an ex hijabi I can really relate to this. Every outfit needs so many things to think about if you want to still look feminine and trendy yet modest at the same time. It’s so much easier, quicker and cheaper to get dressed now. Also I don’t miss the horrible head pain I would get from having my hair tied back in a bun for hours and hours with a scarf on top pulling it all down. It was truly horrible

They cover even more of the body than women’s bathing suits did at the turn of the last century. Actually by the 1920s nearly all women wore bathing suits that left all their legs and arms exposed. That’s why I find it so bizarre seeing women and even little girls in these “burkini” things.

Yes the great creator of everything, who created our bodies would have insisted on half of them covering themselves up to look like the grim reaper everyday. Buncha rediculousness.

I believe if you are dark skinned and move to a cold climate like Canada or Great Britain your skin does not absorb as much sunshine (Vitamin K I think) as you need and wearing clothing that covers you so much further exacerbates the problem and you have some women now suffering from vitamin deficiency diseases like rickets.

There is no pink tax *pinches bridge of nose in exasperation*. I'm a woman and I can tell you with absolute 100% certainty that you don't *have* to pay more if you don't want to. I buy off-brand, generic products, I even often share with my husband (e.g. body wash, deodorant, razor brand). If some women *choose* to buy more expensive products, then what is being taxed is their *choice*. The only items where I'd say that most women are being a captive audience that's being milked is when it comes to female hygiene products. They are ridiculously expensive for what they are (...cotton wads and small "depends"), but since we pretty much have to buy them, they can take us for whatever sum they want.

and about the Hijab, Indonesia being the biggest Muslim country, the hijab wearing was reasonably rare 30 or 40 years ago but I note that it is becoming the norm as the country becomes more fundamentalist. But many young women still wear tight clothes where you can see every dimple and freckle while they are wearing the hijab. This puts paid to the theory that they are wearing it for modesty and tells me that they are wearing it because of social pressure. Anecdotal evidence is telling me that it is very hard to secure a job there if you do not wear the hijab.

Fabric is pretty expensive as it is a novelty in many places. It's cheaper where I live to buy clothes. Nice fabrics are even more expensive. I heard around the US Civil War that women would spend two months of their husband's salary just on materials for those outfits with the large skirts and crinoline. They were also a fire and dragging hazard. I think they stopped when they learned more about contagious diseases. No one wanted to be around women whose clothes drug on the dirty floor and weren't washed regularly.

Also, You need LOTS of fabric for wide clothes like that. Cotton gets smelly pretty fast, and linen or silk is pretty expensive. I found out when I was doing medieval reenactment.

Yeah, but think about how much your scalp might sweat and, obviously, you need to wash all of those layers and the hijab more often. Polyester is wrinkle-resistant (which is a big selling point), so that means you don't have the additional time to waste in ironing cotton or linen fabrics. It all adds up into extra labour and expenses.

I'm an amateur seamstress and these clothes are more expensive simply because there's so much more fanbric in it! If you want natural fabric, costs go over the roof. Also, if you are stretchy fabric like cotton jersey, you need serger and so much more thread! It's crazilly expensive.

And then there is me, who can drape a soft saree around my body and can float in daily life because the air billowing thru pretty prints lifts me off the ground. Easily available even here in Africa and ranging in prices.

I like to buy tops that are a couple sizes too big, in the right shapes it looks really nice and flowy. People are often like “I like your dress” and I reply “thanks, it’s actually an extra large top”. I need to have my bum covered to feel comfortable, I don’t like tops that stop at the waist/hips.

Thats all just so degrading, even self degrading not just degrading in the other ways- the book & the men & its beyond modesty you dont have to wear all that to be dressed modestly. None of it is flattering at all in any type of way

I’ve had a similar discussion with a Muslim colleague of mine. Mostly sha wears mainstream modest clothing: wide leg pants, a loose shirt/top worn over the pants, and her hijab over that worn in such a way that it covers her shoulders, neck and head. I always saw her wearing the same hijab. She cited cost. Both her and her husband have university degrees, have fulltime jobs. But they have three kids and do everything to pay off the loan on their home as fast as possible. Most clothing specifically geared to Muslim ladies is EXPENSIVE. I went to check because for her birthday, I wanted to get her a full hijab kit in her favourite colour… and I gulped. So instead I took to my sewing machine and my knitting needles. I made her a silk blend hijab for Summer and knitted her a soft, lightweight scarf for inside wearing throughout the year. She can drape it in such a way her neck is covered without having to use a full size hijab when it’s impractical. My colleague is young and deserves to feel as pretty as anyone, especially because she’s such a beautiful soul. It felt unfair to me that she would need to feel frumpy for the sake of frugality and financial sense.

Unfortunately, even if I were to charge half of minimum wage for the time it took me to make these gifts and throw in the raw materials at cost, they would become very expensive. So I prefer to keep it at gifts. Either to individual ladies, or to charities. Ten years ago I became a single mother and learned the value of donated time and of unexpected gifts. Now it’s my turn to give back.

Also is it just me or does at least Arab culture seem rather materialistic especially for women? Maybe its just cuz i see pictures or videos of people in Saudi or Dubai & they just show wealthy people but it seems like showing off fancy handbags, jewelry etc. Bored birds in gilded cages.

It was the same thing for me, when I was mormon. Temple garments are expensive!!! Also, i work in a warehouse and it’s hot. I work with a LOT of Muslims. I can only imagine how sweaty and stanky it is in those clothes 😢

@@kaledonia1983 Not anymore, that's correct. My parent's generation were still brought up to at the very least cover their hair (as a woman). And my grandparents, the women would wear a hat with a cute veil. Things have changed so rapidly in the last 100 years.

It is very hard to find modest, attractive clothes. I'm not Muslim but still dress conservatively by modern US standards. I was size 0 when in my 20s and 30s. Affordable women's clothing didn't get that small. Teen jeans did but they all had rips, holes, were low rise, or had other issues. Children's pants would fit best around my bottom but were too short. Fortunately, I've now gained enough weight for this to not be a problem. One still cannot find a dress that isn't low in the front, has a back, has sleeves at least to the elbows, and is kneee length. If it's difficult for me, I can only imagine how hard it is for Muslim women and others who are required to dress even more modestly.

Depend on which countries you live. It is very easy in Asia countries to find dress that isn't low cut.

Another very crucial point to make is the difficulty of how much more volume of luggage you have to carry around while traveling as a hijabi when your average piece of clothing is made up of as much as 5x the fabric! And don’t get me started on how much space one single southeast-Asian-type of suit takes! 🗽

And the women also have to dress up under the hijabs and abayas - for their husbands an women friends who are allowed to see them.

I was looking at news vidos of Saudi Arabia from 1930 and the women are with their faces uncovered and dressed in very similar fashion to the man in the video . Its quite amezing how new this is

I am a traditional Catholic. Modesty is important in our circles, but by modesty we mean decency, basically not wearing things that draw too much attention to yourself. There is not really an officially rule, but typically that means covering up shoulders, chest, wearing dresses past the knee. We cover our head in church as it is mentionned in the Bible, but you can cover it in different ways, scarf, hat or whatever. It’s mostly for the symbol. These rules are very easy to live by and are not a burden. They allow for different styles to express themselves, and only extremely rarely you’ll see people policing each other about it. For me, the Muslim version of modesty seems to be more about erasing the woman as a whole and burdening her. Every time I stumble across a post with a hijabi girl on social media under it are endless debates about whether or not her hijab is correct. Woman’s dress seems like an obsession in Islam, it’s very creepy and I don’t see how this helps promotes growth in virtue and holiness.

I am not a Muslim so perhaps I shouldn’t comment, but as a woman I don’t like the idea of women forced to wear head coverings. If it’s a choice, fine, but I had no idea how expensive these head coverings are. Wow.

Hmm...when I was younger( from teens through thirties), dressing modestly for girls and women used to mean changing into clothing that is more appropriate(i.e., wearing pants and a sweater, or a dress that was at least two inches below the knees) for receiving visitors/guests, during the school week, and/or going out to lunch.

Honestly, as a girl who changed my whole wardrobe twice to 3 times to change my style, collecting fashion pieces are expensive but when my mum starting to get more religious I was surprised she spent about $50 on abaya. Mind you the average price of a decent piece of clothing is about $10-$15 in my country. Abayas are so expensive despite being very simple to make (Im a seamstress so ik its low effort piece just maybe the fabric it needs to make like 2-3 times more than normal piece)

The way you dress represents a lot of things. I think modest clothes are more serious and skimpy clothes look a little frivolous however they don’t look morally wrong to me

I agree with you. I am a Catholic woman and likes to dress modestly but Islamic modesty is a whole other extreme and it is very expensive. I feel blessed I have plenty of money to buy clothes but clothes especially more modest clothes can be expensive. I just wear high necked shirts and skirts or capris below my knees. But I can still feel perfectly comfortable in the summer and at my job using these modest guidelines. Plus I have so many more options since my neck, arms, and head do not need to be covered. I wear prayer veils to mass but I just take them off when I leave church. I couldn’t imagine wearing something on my head all the time. I remember I bought a thin sun jacket to help me not get sunburned and it came with a hood. I tried wearing the hood but got super hot so switched to a sun visor so my head didn’t heat up so much….And the amount of clothes and sets to mix and match to be that modest would cost a lot especially for different seasons. I know even my moderate modest outfits cost a lot for me to assemble and I don’t even need a head scarf or anything.

It's called learn to sew - there are many easy skirt patterns, and a scarf is a quick fashionable fix for a low neckline, Straw sun hats work great at a church service - invest in a basic Black Felt hat for autumn & winter services.

When I lived in Asia I had tailors but now I moved back to the US they charge a lot for just one change. I cannot sew at the level of expertise I need.

I'm a tall woman and at the time I wore hijab and abaya, so actually mostly jilbab.and the abayas were always far too short for my long legs, if I wanted to buy a long abaya it was very expensive.I also wanted a burkini swimming suit, I found one on the internet on a Tunisian site, it was very wide and would have covered everything, but it would cost €80cost. i didn't buy it. Niqab gloves are so small and thin and cost €15-20. It's all very expensive.niqab a tiny piece of fabric 25-40€ ... I mostly bought everything used online. and btw the quality is poooor many things new or used was pooor quality

That doesn't make sense. No one needs to buy expensive abayas. A simple abaya and scarf costs practically nothing compared to the price of wearing a different outfit everyday. Obviously women wear what they want under it.

On the other hand- if you wear a hijab, you don’t have to worry about going to the hairdresser. No need to get stylish cuts or dye your hair. Seriously, let women dress the way they want to: modest or sexy- let her decide! PS Women can be frugal or go crazy buying clothes, any clothes, doesn’t matter with or without a hijab or abaja.

I've always been curious about this notion of wearing Hijabs, Niqabs, and burkas. I'm aware of the Umar story. However, most Muslims talk of modesty and of concealing a woman's beauty from other men besides her husband lest their hearts be filled with love and lust for her. But why doesn't Allah simply fill men's hearts with love and desire only for their intended? Does the Quran and the Hadiths not clearly state that before birth the destiny of every human is pre ordained and sealed in a scroll that cannot be altered? And in addition to this, cannot a woman's heart be filled with love and desire for men also? If so why are men not compelled to cover their heads, necks, faces? Too many contradictions.

It is the men who cannot controlled their lust. They should look down or look away if they cannot control their lust. Even if a woman is covered up from head to toe, the men will still lust after her. They will think in their minds how she looked if she is naked, or they will try to undress her in their minds. In fact, there is a rape case where a man strangle a girl with her hijab and rape her.

Finally someone talks about it 👍 I never cared much about my exterior so I was lured into Islam by the promise to never have to think about my clothes again. But it’s a lie: Make-up, nice clothes underneath and a nice probably expensive hairstyle is mostly still a part of a hijabi‘s life … You also need to care about your looks when covered up: You still need to find a man in hijab 🫣 At least the husband will buy the lingerie 😅 So far my main problem had been that I didn’t even get most of the important items. With the current fashion maybe I wouldn’t even have been interested in islam since longer skirts and looser shirts are nowadays ok to wear (back then I got bullied for not clothing sexy enough as an 11 year old 🙄). I got more than enough scarves (I still have an impressive collection 😂) but floor-length skirts in the West? I didn’t have the money nor the possibility to go to a Middle-Eastern country … I was always told the same: In the Middle East it’s cheap - well, didn’t help me 🙄 At least it saved me from a public coming out as a hijabi as well as a Muslim 🫣 Would have looked strange: Long sleeves, tight leggings, way too short shirt but proper headscarf 😂

It depends very highly on the Muslim circles you enter/marry into whether they expect you to have a lot of nice halal clothing options. But in my experience most Muslim circles value status symbols, nice clothes, expensive hair styles and jewelry… That’s what I meant as it’s still mostly a part of a hijabi‘s life. You can’t completely escape the culture that Muhammad and his companions have set up by bragging and living in luxury…

It is a similar ordeal if you're part of a strict christian based religion. Amish, pentecostal, some catholics, some baptists, ect. So expensive. And a real hardship to just living life. I am still christian, but no longer follow man made rules, I discern for myself what is ok to wear, and use the recommendation of my husband, too. I can wear pants and leggings and sandals now. Earrings and jewelry are ok too, I can wear more colors now. I respect my church atmosphere by dressing modest enough for church, but wear whatever I want the rest of the time. If your spiritual beliefs are real, your conscience will help you.

What happened to just being a lazy Muslim and wearing a loose scarf over your head. It’s such an over the top cultivated fashion. Like they wear padding on their buns to give the hijab the right shape. You don’t need to do any of those things. Just drape a scarf loosely over your head. It’s easy and traditional and affordable.

Hi I’m a Muslim girl who wears hijab and I’m here to tell u, the cost only exists in non Muslim country’s, where I live it’s 1 jd for a mediocre hijab and 3jd for a good one. Under caps are 50 irch for a mediocre one and 1 jd for a good one. Abayas are 10 for one that doesn’t close and 20 for one that does close. That’s not including the crazy sales that they make here 😂 And for ur concerns over hair loss Hijab is actually good for hair because it protects over damage from the sun, the hair tension isn’t really a thing if u have a good hair care routine. Did I mention olive oil is hella cheap here? Maybe it’s not Islam that’s the problem it’s the people scamming u for ur money. America be like: dress is 20$ Abaya: 100$ They’re the same thing 😂

the only reason u find a 80$ dress "expensive" is because of exploitation of labor and sl ave workers in sweatshops working for fast and ultra fast fashion brands. Clothes are very taken for granted.

This is a very dumb argument, you can run out of money buying regular clothes as well if you are a shopaholic, and target clothes are bad quality, as for abaya and hijab , you don’t need a whole closet full in fact that’s considered wasteful, and just like the regular fashion industry , there is a hijab fashion industry, but I don’t see any of you saying how bad the fashion industry is , and just like there is a 5$ shirts of low quality material there is cheap alternatives for hijab , I would argue that you save money of clothes because hijab doesn’t make you a fashion victim chasing after every trend 😂🙄

As a Muslim who has worn the hijab against her parents’ wishes since the age of 12, neither have I nor any hijab wearing woman faced hair loss or any of the problems mentioned by the part time hijabis in the comments. And I went to a private all girls Muslim school 😂. Please, go and narrate our experiences for us. Love how everyone has a comment on Muslim women except for the practising and non colonialised Muslim woman herself

We all like to forget that God doesn’t practice any of our religions. Who are we to decide any of this? What is so wrong with simply respecting all people for who they are not what they wear? The problem as always is men deciding what women should do. It’s time for true equality and the right to decide for ourselves what is right for us. I personally do not care what anyone decides to wear or not wear I only care about the right to free choice and I do believe God gave us that a brain and right to choose.

You can easily get cheap hijabs(under $5) from Aliexpress/Temu, Arab stores etc. The problem is not the hijab- it’s the idea of unrealistic beauty that women everywhere have been sold that we’re constantly trying to achieve through makeup/ clothes etc. Muslim women aren’t immune to this either.

So it is like every modern woman shopping. You start slowly shopping and your wardrobe grows as you get older. Most modern women owe one swimsuit if they swim. I thought the outerwear was for leaving home. And home and sleep wear was private. As you age you update and replace what you need. But a new dress is your church dress until....

Growing up Christian, my mom always told me how bad she felt for those poor Muslim women whose husbands force them to cover up. She always said they needed and deserved to feel beautiful.

My family's Pentecostal. While my family went to the less strict branch of the church, I have friends in the stricter branch. They will sometimes share links to the 'official' websites to buy Pentecostal-appropriate clothing, and the prices made my head spin. Mostly, I've seen women wearing 'normal' shirts with long sleeves underneath so you can't see their arms. Sometimes, that looks okay. But, I've also seen women do that with their wedding dresses, and it just looks odd.

As a Greek Orthodox Christian woman and a child of nature that God created in all wisdom I never really paid attention of my clothes yet some were more modest for church but nevera head covering. Head covering was eventually abandoned after the Greek revolution against the Ottomans. Because I always had very very long reddish blonde hair for church only I would either braid it or twist it in a low bun. I am married I have a 17 year old son everything good!

As someone with severe hyperhidrosis I could NEVER wear that much clothing in the summer. It would be completely drenched within half an hour from my head to my shoulders. I can’t imagine what Muslim women with this condition go though. They’d never be able to leave the house in the summer.

All I'm hearing is there is a significant business opportunity for entrepreneurs who can figure out a way to make good quality hijabs at a reasonable price.

What is the cost of revealing pants, G string panties, Botox, nail job, coiffure? Wear like Muslims and you will save money. I was working at David Jones in the past and many of my female coworkers smuggled panties and bras after their shifts. One of them told me it is not affordable anymore and we have to keep in style otherwise her friends mock her.
