My parents offered to pay for my dental school 430k in 2016. I declined because I knew it would delay their retirement. @@ft9kop I went to a public state school. My tuition was about average…280k direct cost. Indirect cost such as room/boarding, fees and cost of living added roughly 120k. Add 7.8 percent interest on top. There is not much left after bills and student loan payments. I buy groceries on sale and drive a 15 year old 4runner. I just googled estimated cost of attendance today and for example usc dental’s website list estimated cost first year alone is 175k. Not worth the cost anymore in my opinion. My friends that went into trades have broken 6 figures without the debt and 8 years of opportunity cost.

My wife was a Nurse Practitioner when we met 14 years ago. She is now also a certified nurse midwife and delivers babies. I have been an RN on a telemetry unit for 8 years. Hourly I make more than she does. There are RNs at the facility I work at making more than I do as “market floats”. While some NPs do make more… there are plenty of RN jobs that would surprise you on salary. You also have to factor in as an NP you have WAY more liability. My wife brings work home frequently and is working more days per week (I work 3 x 12 hour shifts / wk). Furthermore, I can pick up a shift almost anytime I want and make extra income. In the past I also worked PRN at a surgical center PACU. There is no shortage of work if you feel like putting in the time. I get that floor nursing is stressful, but being a nurse practitioner isn’t a cake walk either.

A LOT of the reason people don’t seem grown up even in their 30’s and beyond is because their parents brought them up under a lot of control and making them feel like “they can’t” think for themselves like others do. It was very engrained in me and it’s hard to completely let go of that feeling because it’s the only feeling you feel from the connection you had with your parent. It’s so shameful. There is another way to do this, but it’s kicking it old school - and people have already convinced themselves that it’s not possible. I dropped my nursing license to stay home with my kids. My husband, after a decade in his job, now makes a high of $57k/gross. His max earnings cap out at $70k/year gross. I stay home and do all the housework, cook dinner, do the dishes, the laundry, etc. My husband only mows the lawn and snow-blows. We are done everything early, and have the weekends free of chores. We can afford to do this because we made huge sacrifices to pay off our debt, and now we continue to spend way below anyone else we know. I can assure everyone that of you have one parent home, one parent at work, and control your spending... it feels like “working as little as possible”. ❤

They work longer hours because they are basically doing the bulk of the doctors work in the hospital setting. I met 2 brilliant ones that actually quit because of mom’s guilt because of the demand of working so many hours. You can usually rent for around 4 to 500 a month which is cheap rent, and you also get the adventure of moving around to different campgrounds. It’s not a perfect solution but if i were starting over that’s probably what I would do. We lived in rv for a year and a half with 5 kids while building our house so it should be easy for a couple. It’s definitely harder now than when we bought but not impossible as long as you’re willing to put up with some things and get creative.

@@troytruong8246 42 here and I'm in a similar spot. Had severe mental health and substance issues since high school which were never resolved. Gambling issues too but those aren't nearly as bad. Went to college for about a decade straight without any real plan, just went to a party school so I could score enough drugs to hopefully OD and...well, fill in the blanks. Was too scared to do all that and now I'm stuck doing gig stuff and looking for jobs that kids half my age are just advancing from lol. Been sober since 35 or so, but I still feel like I'm absolutely worthless because I KNOW I am. At this point I'm just gonna stick to gig stuff. Not a choice for me. Can't go back to school since I'm about 125k or so in debt from that. Got zero savings since I drop nearly everything I make on my car (and saving for a new one as we speak). I wake up every day looking myself in the mirror saying "alright j0elsuf, you're gonna just have to start from scratch EVERY F**KING DAY until you finally get things right. Probably gonna die trying. So what. Just do it anyways." I absolutely hate what I was and hate what I have become. Hate who I am now. If I had the opportunity I'd swap bodies with someone else so I could shoot ME in the head. But that hatred for myself is what allows me to only sleep five hours a night despite working 12 hours and exercising almost as rigorously as I did in my 20s. Because F**K ME do I want things to change and by hook or by crook I'm going to do it. Prove everyone wrong especially myself.

$25,000 construction salary in New York 🤣 I don't get why these people keep having kids if their goal is work as little as possible and have financial security??? What is it you want, kids, money or time off? Pick one maaaaaybe 2 you don't get to choose 3.

They covered all of the bases except: this will also teach your children to be someone, take care of themselves. Not to mention what happens when your parents die and your kids also can’t stand on their own feet?

Money is not the most important thing. Having a parent home with the kids is most important. Dad can stay home and care for the kids. Nothing wrong with that.
