Yosemite in OpenGOAL: Part 2 - Some Actors!

LATEST PROGRESS: • Yosemite in OpenGOAL: ...

Now Yosemite is really there, and most of its actors are working fine! I was able to collect all 69 orbs of the level, and the cannon is functional. Swingpoles are also good.
Trying to use the Zoomer crashes the game, and the big water does not want to appear. I should fix these issues. I may also be able to substitute the 'plainbox' actors with normal crates. For 'cavewater' and 'stagdrip', I have no idea what to do - they don't exist anywhere.
Music was added during editing. There are no sounds in OpenGOAL yet.

Since the last video, I published my 'yosemite' branch to GitHub. You can't really use it until the TPL Preview build is released, but it is available anyway: github.com/LuminarLight/jak-p...

    Yeah as great as this game is. It should have been longer in my opinion, with more levels. It would be interesting to see what other levels they cut from the game. Because I remember hearing they had more planned.

    They definitely could have done a Mario and put another 20 power cells in the game, spread through Yosemite and whatever other few levels they planned. But oh well. That’s how time restraints go I guess.

    Yeah i definitely agree with you oh though it does give me that mountain pass feeling and a little bit of misty island feeling so it is kind of cool to see , the way this projects is going It may even be possible to mod Jak and Daxter the precursor legacy :D

    Supposedly there was gonna be a village where we met the Yellow Sage, and we would possibly see the Lurkers taking the gigantic mother Flut-Flut away in the Sierra area, and also there was going to be a boss somewhere around this part of the game. But that's all I remember.

    Sadly enough, I believe every Jak game was severely cut down from its original concept with 2 being the closest to the original idea if I remember correctly. Jak 3 was going to have a much grander story for example. Don't misunderstand. I love the games we got. They were my childhood and I still appreciate them for being some of the best games I've ever played, for shaping my tastes in games, aesthetics and storytelling, for being a major part of why I'm currently training to become a game dev, one of my goals being to create a game universe that feels as rich in lore as the Jak series. But man, I can't help but feel sad when I read those design bibles and see all the cool stuff that was never realized in the games. If only these games hadn't been annual releases. If they'd been allowed a little more time in the oven, maybe just like six months each or something, I'm sure they'd have gone from classics to masterpieces

    As interested as I am in these cut levels, I actually really like the original game’s pacing and length. I think it ends just when it should, and feels just right for 100%.

    Man, seeing cut levels like Yosemite really makes me wish that we got all of the levels outlined in the design bible. So many missed opportunities to make this game even better than it is, if only they had the time to pull it off.

    The year is 2666, Jak 1 remake inevitably comes out, this level is included. Everyone now talks all the time. So many effects, your brain melts after 10 minutes.

    ​@@AllStarKingD You got the story written somewhere? I'm also wondering how it'd be possible for such a mod to exist. I'm guessing it should be fine as long as the (legally obtained) .iso is required to play the mod.

    Sadly Naughty Dog will never make a Jak and Daxter like this anymore it’s not in their best business interests! If they ever made a new Jak and Daxter it would most likely reflect some sort of realism! The only way we get a new Jak and Daxter in this style is crowd fund to get a lot of money for the game and get the original team that worked on it to create a new game. But then it would run into legality issues and potentially need to fight a law suit from Naught Dog

    ​@@McNibblerThey meant in the style of the precursor legacy. Daxter wasn't exactly that despite being the middle story between Precursor Legacy and Jak II.

    This looks awesome! Yosemite looks so mind-blowing! I wish we had this level in the game. Also, was that the Red Eco Vent Switch that was supposed to be located in Yosemite? 'Cause in the final game, we only had the Blue & Yellow Eco Vent Switches, but not Red Eco.

    It's more likely the green sage had the green eco switch near his hub. Also I think there's some unused voice lines with daxter talking a about red eco switch.

    Sad that they had to cut this level, seems fun once fully realized, also thanks a bunch for your hard work, hopefully we're gonna play the trilogy without weird bugs or abysmal resolutions

    It would be cool if after activating the red eco switch, Jak has the ability to topple down trees with his punch. Could be used to create new platforms. Personally if I was a Naughty Dog dev I would have opted to cut Spider Cave and keep Rock Lake/Yosemite. It's a shame this was cut from the retail release.

    I really want to see a mod where this is worked into the game as a finished level. If there's a bunch of unused voice lines they could add to it too, that would just be amazing.

    It was composed for this level. But the music was never in the game. It can be found in the official soundtrack, sold by Limited Run Games. I just added it to the video during editing.

    This music has more vibes of Ty The Tasmanian Tiger than Jak, interestingly. Imagine Jak in the great Outback with eco boomerangs haha

    Holy shit this is genuinely one of the coolest things I've seen in a while, I love deepdive things like this into niche games, I wonder if some day it'll be possible to make custom levels / assets for it How are you playing this, I'm assuming PCSX2, right?

    My first Yosemite video was in PCSX2. But this one is in OpenGOAL, because I had to make changes to the code to be able to get actors to spawn. OpenGOAL is a fan-made PC port of Jak (1 for now), led by water (a person).

    @@GreenTeaTheTea I am not working on OpenGOAL, as I said that project is led by water. They don't take donations as far as I know. Likely for a good reason - this is already close to being illegal, but it is still in the legal area. Accepting money for it may anger Sony I think? For this video, I made modifications to base OpenGOAL to make Yosemite work better. But I am not smart enough to be able to contribute much to the project.

    I don't know what OpenMW is. And i didn't say there are any problems, the project is close to illegal, but still in the legal area. So in theory it should be safe. My wording may make little sense in English.

    Yes. Judging by its position, it is likely that the cave of the Miners was originally going to lead here.

    @@LuminarLight seems fair since the miners take up 4 powercells which could’ve instead been earned in that cut level. Would’ve been ace to see the rest of the world from that mountain

    We see a lot of games get delayed these days because they aren't quite finished yet and everyone is happy for them to be delayed because we've seen how shitty they can turn out if rushed to meet the release date. Not that this game was shit by any means. Even though its one of my favourites of all time, I REALLY wish this game had been delayed so we could have had all the content that ended up being cut.

    This is WAY bigger than Sentinel Beach. There's more surface area but even more importantly, it's a lot more vertical. Plus there's a cave and you're supposed to be able to use the zoomer to fly out over the big lake.

    @@JM-nd9zf compare it to the other non-hub levels though. Nothing comes close to the Sentinel. This still appears like it would have been more similar to sentinel's scale than anything else. Only non exclusive level that you can use the zoomer is misty and thats a HUGE level in comparison to this. That lake doesn't look that big. He was able to climb around the level in a couple minutes, now compare that to something like spider cave, lost city, or snowy mountain, that each have so many branching rooms. I will say, it really does compare to the Forrest area in Jak 2.

    Also another thing I wonder, if the cut content we know about WAS included in the game, would the total number of power cells still have been 101 and would that mean there would be less than 7 in each area or would there have been more than 101?

    I think they only finalized the power cell count after this level was cut from the game.

    I think it's more likely that the 4 power cells the miners sell and the hidden one in the crate in Volcanic Crater were added to make up for the power cells lost from Yosemite. I think they always intended to have at least 100 power cells.

    If this level is ever implemented into a build of OpenGoal that everyone can play, do you think it should be called Rock Lake in game? Since that is what it seems to have been called in the text files within the preview build.

    It will never be implemented into base OpenGOAL. But I already have a "yosemite branch" (in description) that will eventually incorporate this level into the game. Not really useful until the owner of TPL Preview build releases the build.

    The github branch says to provide the YOS.DPO from the 2001 preview, but that isn't public afaik.

    The Yosemite level file is in the September 2001 Preview build, and the owner has still not released it yet. I believe he will do it soon though. Once the build is available to the public, I will share videos, tutorial as well.

    I made a modification of OpenGOAL (link in description), that makes this level mostly perfectly work. The only problem is, it needs the Yosemite level file from the TPL Preview build, which its owner has not released yet.
