There is no music for this level in the game, I added it during editing!
This level was found in the Jak TPL September 2001 Preview build. The build itself is 2 months older than final version, and this level (in file YOS.DGO) is 3 weeks older than the other levels in the build. So it is nearly 3 months older than final version.
It is no longer defined anywhere in the game, and thus has no checkpoints either, making it a bit more challenging to load. On top of all that, it is just simply incompatible with the preview build (because it is 3 weeks older). Though with some tricks, I managed to make it load somewhat nicely. The textures are a bit corrupted-looking, and all the actors are missing. Hopefully these issues will be fixable in the future.
The following actors are placed in the level (but none are currently present due to the incompatibility):
*camera-start: This is usually used for checkpoints, which implies it probably had checkpoint in the past. There is only one placed in this level.
*cavewater: No idea what this is, the asset is not present anywhere. There are 6 of them placed in the level.
*mistycannon: The cannon from Misty Island and Sentinel Beach. The asset is present, and there is only one placed in the level.
*money: Precursor Orbs, they are present in "game engine", so orbs should appear once the issues get fixed. There are 69 of them placed in the level.
*plainbox: No idea what this is, the asset is not present anywhere. May have been an earlier version of chests/crates? There are 38 of them placed in the level.
*racer: The Zoomer, the asset is present. There is only one placed in the level.
*stagdrip: No idea what this is, the asset is not present anywhere. May have something to do with stalagmites? There are 12 of them placed in the level.
*swingpole: The actor that is essential for making swingpoles work. They should be fine once the compatibility issues are fixed. Level has 9 of them placed.
*water-vol: Water volume, it should be fine once the compatibility issues are fixed. I have a strong feeling that the big blackness surrounded by the level is supposed to be a lake.
The internal name of the level is 'yosemite', and it has strong resemblance to concept art in the design bible that is labelled as 'SIERRA'. Also, I asked the composer if this was the mysterious "Unsnowy Mountain" that he composed music for, and he said yes. And it is also worth mentioning that in the old TPL world map in the Design Bible, a 'SIERRAS' area is there, connected to hub3.

    I can't believe I get to see this with my own eyes! It's surreal to think this would have been right beside Volcanic Crater this whole time - I bet the "Jump over the lake" and "Protect the miner's gems in the stump" unused tasks were for this level. And I'd bet money that there was going to be boulders to dodge on the way up the mountain, an idea that later saw use in Jak II's Mountain Temple. Thanks for the great video!

    There was even dialogue recorded for those missions. I stumbled upon this video of cut TPL dialogue and the are some lines from daxter in there, talking about the stump and the gems. Starts at about 1:48 kzread.info/dash/bejne/dI6go6OAeMayms4.html

    The fact that we are now finding cut levels in this game 20 years later is just so crazy keep up the amazing work luminar I think if they would have finished it . the big Crystal the miners were hitting would eventually brake and it would open the area leading into yosemite that’s just what it looks like according to where it was placed in the map

    This is truly incredible. After so long there is still more in Jak and Daxter to find. A whole level, and so close too. It's been right there this whole time. There MUST be a way to put this back into the game, it would be amazing.

    Imagine if after getting 101 powercells, this was the reward. Like after you get the cells, the miners clear the crystal out and it opens a pathway to this new world. That would have been so cool

    This is the kind of thing I always had in my imagination as a kid - new, undiscovered areas to explore in TPL with forests, caves, and meadows. God, this just sets my imagination on fire all over again!

    I am both blown away and pissed that we didn't get this level in the final game. Imagine having to climb that cliffside and hit a red eco switch to activate all the vents in snowy mountain

    So my suspicion since I was a child was perfectly correct. They really were going to have 3 levels for the red sage just like the previous sages. This level is extremely beautiful because it contains one of my favourite biomes. The OST for it is superb, so calming and fitting. It makes a whole lot of sense, and I can see that the developers were sad they couldn't fit this level in, as in Jak 2 and 3 they had mountainous forest levels albeit much less charming. Honestly it's a shame, because the game feels quite incomplete now. I know now for sure that they must've also planned to make a yellow sage hub with 3 more levels before heading to the citadel. It's the natural order of things and anyone who's played many PS2 games of a similar kind understands why leaving out the yellow sage is so jarring. Just makes me wish, since Naughty Dog clearly no longer cares about Jak, they gave the IP to someone else and incorporated all these lost concepts that couldn't make it into the final product.

    It does seem incomplete now that you put it that way. With only 2 levels in the 3rd hub and none for the yellow sage, it seems like 4 more levels would have made this game that much greater and would've given a more complete feel. Shame..still a classic I've played many times through the years. Most recent playthrough was in June.

    Based on the design bible their it seems like they had a lot of really ambitious ideas, with around 22 levels vs the 16 in the final game (with some interesting themes like a Savannah, Underground Forest and Village, Precursor Foundry (what eventually became the Citadel)). The world map itself also seems a lot more interconnected then the “hub and spoke” design they eventually used, with levels appearing to be connected directly with each other. Also a more complex plot line where the precursor robots would have taken a more central role - the final boss battle was going to be a 1 v1 robot vs robot duel, which would have been pretty awesome to see. Unfortunately it’s hard to tell how much of this went further than the concept stage, the seeing as the design bible contains a second story synopsis that follows the retail game more closely I imagine they probably reduced the scope fairly early in pre-production.

    This is the single coolest find I think I've ever seen come out of TPL. Such a shame this level didn't make the final cut... it looks like it would've been a much needed pace-breaker in Volcanic Crater. Fingers crossed that we might see a full restoration of this someday!

    The green and red eco vents are automatically open in the final game, maybe the red switch was originally intended to be here?

    Yeah definitely would've been the red eco vent. I can understand the green eco vent being open since the green sage kept Jak fit and pruned his realm, but the others being closed makes sense due to lurker activity.

    Would have been really interesting if there were closed yellow vents in this level and some of the red vents in Snowy Mountain were closed too. Would have been cool to play either level first then coming back later to get the unattainable power cells, as opposed to the 1st hub where Forbidden Jungle is always the most optimal first level choice.

    Yeah, I always think like that when I look at the Dock in Boggy Swamp and realize the fisherman was originally meant to be there as well to continue our journey by coast.

    I wish this made it into the final game. One of my ONLY complaints about Jak 1 is that it wasn't longer. I would've loved this level to be in the Volcanic Crater hubworld, which it looks like it originally was. My guess is it was cut for time.

    I used to think that the name "Un-snowy Mountain" implied that we did something to remove the cold climate from the Snowy Mountain level - but the music here fits SO well over the "Savannah" level that it makes me thing Un-snowy Moutain may have just been a place holder name FOR this level

    I'd pay money to play this level, fully complete, along with maybe 3 levels for the yellow sages lab. They could release 4 levels in the form of "unreleased DLC" and I'd snatch it up real quick.

    3:04 red eco switch! so that's where it was originally going to be. Would actually be quite awesome if they came out with a remastered Jak and Daxter at some point - but with some 'lost' levels like this added for the old fans. You could even add a few more adjacent to the Yellow sage's hut, then go on to Gol and Maia's Citadel (which one assumes was the original intention). Overall Jak and Daxter a landmark game (and a big part of my childhood) but it is clear in hindsight the final product was only about 80% complete.

    - Wait so the first 3 of 4 levels were cut? - Wonder which level made it in, my gut says Sentinel since it's still quite large despite the sierras dwarfing it and even in the old trailers the level seems fairly complete. - Or maybe Spider because I've got a theory it was supposed to be 'Cave Under Falls' in hub 4 but was repurposed for hub 3, though the level's so roughly put together I'm more inclined to believe it was made late in development, which *could* mean they brought it over last minute because Crystal Mines wasn't working like they'd hoped or they wanted more level variety since there's already allot of lava filled locations in the game. Also the Dark Eco wasn't in Spider's original concept art so it'd make sense if they changed it to better line up with the level it was replacing. - So I guess my first theory for the other 2 cut levels is Crystal Mines... The other, Idk could be a very old version of a current level. Some of Basin's old concepts are very different then the final level, notably it seems WAY more open. - Yeah this is pretty much all speculation sorry : /

    This is spectacular. To be able to see a whole J&D cut level is something so great I could've never even imagined it. If you ever manage to restore the level, it's going to be absolutely amazing to see. By chance do you know if any of the unused missions match with the missing actors and items of the level?     I think this level would have been a very interesting one, it has a lot of depth and height differences. I'm also curious what the third eco vent would have done, I always felt like we were missing a few since we have only 2 vents and technically 6 eco types in the game.     Im assuming it was a red eco vent, although it's only ever used, like, twice for combat segments. I'm assuming it would have more involvement here. Although it begs the question, what would red eco have unlocked? Because blue eco, as we know, activates precursor artifacts and yellow eco destroys metal crates and can be used at a distance, but red eco is close range, and can't destroy metal crates, so I assume it probably is only a combat power up, not one that helps collect power cells or precursor orbs. Maybe to destroy a giant wall...? But then why not just put yellow eco? I dunno, its weird

    Imagine that once the PC port is out, it may be possible to add this level back in via modding. Here's hoping. Edit: Dang, that's a huge level! I love the verticality and how we would've gotten another eco generator as well as another nice Zoomer section. It's a shame this didn't make it in, it looks as if it'd fit in great.

    bro this is so freaking cool!!!!! thank you for digging this up!!! If the big black area was supposed to be a lake then there probably would've been the stilt village there; I imagine you'd use the zoomer to get to different relevant locations and characters.

    Oh I love this! As a young kid I didn't understand that as a game, it wasn't an endless world. But even once I did know that, I always wondered what else could be part of this game/world. It's the best to see that there was so much more planned - though it's sad to see how far through this level they got before it ultimately had to be cut. So much work! Thank you :)

    What a cool find! I never once considered that Jak 1 had cut levels. This one looks really awesome and like it would have been a great portrayal of Jak's open-ended level design with multiple journeys and room to stretch your legs. The Zoomer and Eco monument too, they really wanted to pack it full. I guess Volcanic Crater is the one hub missing a Zoomer level (that's not a transition).

    I’m so extremely bummed this wasn’t in the original game. Makes me even hungrier for a third sequel (yes I know tlf exists, no I’m not counting it) Perhaps we’ll get a remaster/remake of tpl in the future utilizing this level

    When you consider Volcanic Crater having 6 paid for power cells and Gol and Maia's Citadel having an absurd amount of Precursor orbs in blue eco mechanisms its easy to see how a lot that could have fit into this level instead.

    I have a lot of thoughts, but only will share some of them. That was a Red Eco activation thingamajig. I know it, you know it, we all know it. Also, some company needs to hurry up and release their own disks of Jak music. LRG's copyright is expired, remember?

    I am so happy I love cut content and seeing an entire cut level in Jak 1 is just amazing I can only imagine what this could have been and once all these glitches are fixed I'm going to be so happy to see what it really really looks like and I'm just happy and I'm really happy that's all I'm just I'm just ecstatic

    They "cut" those levels because they were never finished. There were no problems with space.

    The ending was also supposed to be robot vs robot, maybe inside the mountain was a the robot. It seems after you clear the red vent on that mountain maybe it opens up near the transpad. It looks like there's several blocked vent place holders there. Maybe as you unlock the flut flut, zoomer, and other vents, you're able to complete that area.

    I still consider the Jak and Daxter games to be Naughty Dog's masterpiece. The story and world building was on another level for the PS2 era, and certainly far above any platformers of the time. Glad I found this video, it does seem like the ending to the game was cut a little bit short. Never opening the Red eco vent was always weird to me.

    It would be cool to get in contact with one of the Devs and work on "finishing" this level so it looks polished and maybe have a few mechanics/missions thrown in that were supposed to be there 🤔😄

    Well, some people are working on decompiling it. From which it could be ported. But restoring this would be its own large-scale project.

    Always wondered where the other eco temples could've been in the world. Really cool to see that this must have been the red one according to some of the cut dialogue.

    This is cool maybe you went thru the cave where the miners were into this level unlocked the red eco vents then made your way up into the snowy mountain area the fortress at the top really felt like there coulda been a boss battle maybe from there a connection level into a fourth hub area and then the final level idk

    I always found it odd volcanic crater only had two levels instead of three. Along with the area from blue sage to red stage being forestry yet no forest related level. I really hope this gets fully restored when the pc port is finished. I don’t care if the level has cannon quests just as long as we get to experience this level as best as possible. All time favorite game and seeing this brings in nostalgia. Would love to play this some how. Mabey even make it wickedly challenging just because why not? Instead of power cells just place some orbs or something idk but either way this is truly epic and it’s great for us to see
