York Rail Barely Misses Truck!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Back in July, before chasing Maryland Midland's UBST, We met York Rail at their interchange with CSX in Hanover, PA. While chasing them back to York, at Spring Grove, a truck was parked way too close to the tracks requiring a conductor to leave the cab and visually inspect how much room they had. It was clear, but only by less than two feet.

Awesome video! Love to see 2 GP15-1's lashed up together. That NS unit seems odd to me the fact it has an E-Bell and a K3.

Industry areas have tight clearances since they were sometimes built from the days when trailers were shorter and railcars were a certain height / size. =^.^=

What happened to using hand signals? They have a two engine consist and they’re using the radio to tie onto those cars on the siding? It’s not like they would miss hand signals at that distance.

In all fairness, this is NOT railroad property. It is the responsibility of the shipper/receiver to ensure a safe loading/unloading area for both truck and rail. Many just do not have the room to expand. He is already hard against the dock, he can go back no further. He has to unload too.

Just everyday railroading when switching plants. Had a truck driver block the tracks on me one day at a large food processor. I couldn't spot the car because he was in the way unloading. We had words. He refused to move. So I just left 3-4 loaded cars right in front of his truck so he couldn't pull out. Multiple phone calls from the customer ensued. The plant manager was a good-natured sort though and convinced me to come back and pull the cars. Trucker wasn't happy.

Let me ask you, what do you do when they tell you to back into dock A, you are blocking the tracks but you have to spot the trailer where they want it? For safety reasons, I cannot move the trailer until they are done with it. It is their property after all. As everybody in the freight business knows, the customer is the King.

@@paulweston2267 Sort of exactly what happened here to be honest. The trucker was unloading bulk flour. We asked him to reposition his truck so we could move by. He said no....we could wait. We politely asked again pointing out, with the plant foreman concurring, that he could do it. The driver said no, it would delay him having to disconnect and reconnect from the plant's piping system. So we just cut off and left the cars there right in front of him. So yes, the customer is king and as I said in my post the plant manager was good-natured about it and asked us to come back and respot him. Which we did.

Truck Driver should have known better. All he had to do was disconnect from his trailer after he was backed in and moved the truck to a safer spot but I also blame it on a stupid layout of where the trucks unload. That seems like a real genius moment on the company’s part.

This place was likely built back when trucks were smaller, not for the 53' trailers we have today. It's more a case of bad timing. As an LTL carrier, he was probably just kicking off a skid or two.

On a completely separate note. I’m curious to know what happened to the train lights that wig wag’d on the train itself. It would be one white light that went left to right. I googled it but all that comes up is the wig wags at railroad crossings. Which is cool in itself but not what I’m looking for.

The lights beneath the walkway are the 'ditch lights'. They usually have 4 settings: off, on steady, both flashing, and alternating. The bigger headlights on the nose, or over the windows, can be steady, or if dual, 1can flash, or wobble in a figure 8. That is made by the GYRALIGHT CO., and was nicknamed a Mars Light, because when people first saw it, they thought it was a UFO!! It was first used on firetrucks.
