Yokohama Geolandar X-AT Test Drive and Review - Mint 400

#yokohamatire #tirereview #offroadtire
We were off to Jean Lake in Nevada behind the wheel of a tricked out Ford Raptor with a newly minted tire to test and review. The new Yokohama X-AT is a more aggressive off-road tire than an all-terrain (AT) but almost as quiet as an AT on the road. Yokohama's goal was to build a tire that could stand up to the abuse delivered by sharp rocks and gravel, deliver fantastic traction on sand and gravel, be incredibly durable so you get more mileage out of a set, and then make it available in a range of sizes including LT and three load range F.
Watch the video as we find out if they did.

    Seriously, will a tire that is in between an All-Terrain and an Mud Terrain work for you? Or are tire manufacturers making too many kinds of tires?

    I like tires like these, however I don't like that most are only offered in E rating. I have a 4Runner, and like tires like these, but an E rated is just overkill.

    They are very good if you need a AT tire that does more off road than regular ones but if things turn extreme then its good old MT to the rescue, one of the reasons I put MT G003 over these but these tires are seriously good.

    Let's face it, the majority of vehicles spend the majority of their time on pavement. My 4Runner is still a daily driver, and not being able to get on a conference call in the car when driving between customers because the road noise from an aggressive MT tire is not great. Heck, most of the distance traveled by our rigs on the way TO off-road locations and overland routes is still going to be on the highway. Having a tire that performs well off-road and on-road in all conditions is pretty ideal.

    Great tire, excellent in snow, quiet, stays in balance between 5k oil changes and tire rotations....I like them slightly better than the ridge grapplers and Toyos I have had. It is an excellent tire for my F250...truck handles better and is a Load E tire. I will do another review once I hit 20k miles vs my Ridge Grapplers. The only down side is the side wall look is not as aggressive as the Ridge grappler. Other than that, my favorite tire to date.

    I like the concept. Able to take more off road punishment than a standard AT but I don't have to listen to the scream of MTs everyday? For me, that's worth checking out.

    I just got these for my truck. Sad to lose the 3-peak rating that I had with my Falken Wildpeaks, but my set of Yokos came stamped with M+S so at least there's that. I'm in SoCal so not much snow, but I do ski 30-40 days/winter all across the west so I'm sure I'll have these on snowy roads at some point. Hopefully they'll do OK. Off road in deeper snow I'm not worried about, but on road I have some doubts. So far though, I'm impressed. Super tough and they aren't lying about these boys being quiet. Quieter than the 25k mile Wildpeaks I just took off.

    I'd love to know the details of how the g015 get a snow rating and these don't. I have the 15s and they're just okay in the snow, very little space for the snow to go when you go over it. Very hard to feel like you can get to the pavement, even in 4wd. Does that mean these are actually horrible in snow? Sucks, these sound so great in every other way.

  • @Icutmetal

    @Icutmetal

    Look at a true snow tire; you don’t see a lot of “space” in between the treads, do you? I think you’re confused as to what provides true traction in snowy conditions.

  • @jcarry5214

    @jcarry5214

    @@Icutmetal Umm. I'm not confused. I've got at least a thousand hours and a dozen 30" plus storms under my belt at the wheel of a plow truck. On top of living in northern New England most of my life. I've wintered in discount studded snows, fancy Nokians, highway continentals, A/Ts, snow rated and non, all in fwd, awd, and4x4. Many "true" snow tires have little space, some have lots. I was more wondering what goes into a snowflake certification. If they bothered to get one for the cheaper tire, which I own and is barely okay in the snow, is there something special about the x-at that means they're even worse? or is a matter of just not paying for a certification that's unnecessary because nobody's buying it for that.

    I think getting hung up on "three peak snowflake" rating is foolish. This is the actual metric of measurement for that symbol from the body of certification; "Testing measures a tire's acceleration traction on medium-packed snow only. Braking and turning on snow, along with ice traction are not components of the test. Tires branded with the 3PMSF symbol are expected to provide improved snow traction beyond a standard M+S branded all-season tire, however 3PMSF-branded all-season and all-terrain tires cannot match the traction of dedicated winter / snow tires in all winter weather conditions and should not be considered a replacement for where and when a dedicated winter tire is needed." So, a 10% increase in forward traction on medium packed snow. Not braking, turning, ice, temperature, etc. So purely a marketing.
