For those River monster fans on animal planet. There was actually a study on the correlation between earthquakes and catfish in Japan. They put a catfish in a tank, and nearby it was a seismograph to keep check of earthquakes. A Laser was put at a point in the tank, it'd record any time the catfish swam by it. just before and during a quake, the usually lazy catfish would actually become more active and pass by the laser more often. It's actually rather common for animals to know before humans when a natural disaster is coming.
@Linfamy

Yes, apparently the catfish were going crazy when the earthquake happened (I'm not sure if they did that before or after). But one of the reasons catfish became associated with earthquakes is that the newspapers printed pictures of tons of catfish thrashing about in the water after the quake hit.

“Kamicon” is probably one of the best jokes you’ve done on the entire channel
A episode of Pokemon was based on this, it was basically banned after a earthquake happened right before it aired
The tradition that Takemikazuchi, which is the enshrined deity of the Kashima-jingu Shrine (present Kashima City, Ibaraki Prefecture), seals in a big catfish with a keystone was widespread at that time, and it appeared rather often in namazu-e as a character to fight the catfish The Manyoshu (Collection of Ten-Thousand leaves) includes a poem about the spirit rock which reads, 'The spirit rock may move but will never be pulled out while Kashima's deity is alive.' The word "kaname-ishi" may be used as a metaphor for something one cannot or should not move
@user-du8wu1ym7e
4 жыл бұрын
@steve gale Kaname-ishi (spirit rocks) are found in Kashima-jingu Shrine in Kashima City, Ibaraki Prefecture and Katori-jingu Shrine in Katori City, Chiba Prefecture. The ground segment of the spirit rock in Katori-jingu Shrine is round while that of Kashima-jingu Shrine's has a dent. The two rocks may be connected underground Also called a wedge-shaped stone in an arch crown that supports a framework called Keystone, of the constructed structure

@steve gale Folktales are different depending on the region. A typical composition would be where the main character of "Shibaraku" holds the namazu bozu down with a keystone. In our area, the ground is loose because it is near the lake Therefore, the Buddha's messenger caught the big catfish. And he locked him in the bell and sank it into the lake. the big catfish is still going to be alive. In Japan, it is said to ring a bell before a natural disaster or man-made disaster occurs.In recent years, the dawn of the day before, such as World War I, World War II, and the Great East Japan Earthquake

@steve gale The meaning of Kaname in Japanese means very important
@user-du8wu1ym7e
4 жыл бұрын
@steve gale Originally, Kaname is the pivot of the Japanese fan “Ougi“. It suppresses everything, and if it's gone, the fan breaks Derived from it, it means points such as main, vita, pivot,pin,heart and soul,center,centre,heart,essence,inwardness,substance,sum, need,etc.
I think that the Catfish are really just blind and they cause earthquakes by accident. Also, just a suggestion, I think that you should talk about Omukade. Ya know, the centipede that makes Dalamadur look like a garter snake.
@cmelton6796

It's dark underground, this checks out
The Kaname-ishi in Kashima-jingu is actually in Ibaraki, a prefecture north-east of Tokyo. It’s a historic shrine with cultural significances. If you look in a map, you will see Tokyo lined up in between Mt. Fuji and Kashima-jingu :)

Cool. I think I saw an episode of River Monsters with Jeremy Wade when he was in Japan searching for the giant catfish. And they mentioned about the Namazu, or catfish, a fish that was said to be able to predict, and or cause earthquakes. And we get to learn more about stories, and references to the catfish. It. Appreciate learning about it, too.

It would be great to have a video of yokai spider or the mirror yokai, since they appear a lot in movie and anime (like inuyasha)
When the rice fields are drained in preparation for planting new rice, people in my country celebrate by catching fish in the mud. This is usually done in some states that still practiced traditional method of cultivation. Apart from eels and other freshwater fishes that live in murky water, they also hand catch Catfishes who hid under the wet muddy ground. Unfortunately, the modern planting method makes it hard for them to survive. Catfishes can survive the condition for a few months underground and when the new rice is planted and the field is flooded with water, those who survived emerged from the mud and feast on the parasites and insects in the flooded rice field. The myth of 'Onamazu' must have come from the fact that catfishes can burrow in wet and muddy ground to survive drought. They must have thought that if the fish moved, there would be a big earthquake. I agree that catfishes are good for the farmers, because they help destroy bad insects and parasites and making the water suitable for rice farming.
