My mother was born and raised in very rural pre-WWII Japan, in mountainous Tochigi prefecture near the small town of Ashio. As a child she and her many (13) siblings would play by the numerous mountain streams at the bottom of gorges. One thing her mother always told them was to not go swimming in the streams because the Kappa that inhabit the streams would come, and eat their butts right off. I guess that tale prevented any of the 13 siblings from ever drowning. I got to visit those streams as a child back in 1965. Before place, but it was basically a ghost town by then, the main industry of that area copper mining long since dead for decades.

Well that title is an interesting way to describe a kappa. In premodern Japan this kind of yokai would be especially common. Japan has a lot of rivers and streams, and most of the population that did not live on the coasts, lived near one of these rivers or streams. Meaning that the kappa were a threat to a lot of people. And the answer is Namazu/Oonamazu.

The legend of the kappa reaching up and taking your shirikodama reminds me of shit-stealing, which I believe you talked about in a video last year. There was a period when people sold shit as fertilizer, and took it from toilets.

As a modern Japanese, the kappa is a symbol of the clear stream and an opponent of pollution. When I go to a river in Japan, I often see signs that Kappa insists, "Don't throw garbage in the river."

The origin of the Kappa is the Japanese giant salamander. A species that was once extremely common in japan, as ancient Japanese people sighted the Kappa, legends grew. But it all began with the Japanese giant salamander.

There are some old myths and rituals about kappa that are downright horrifying (and depressing), especially in the Tohoku region. Nevertheless, it's one of the most popular yokai out there. My kids used to watch a cartoon about a kappa (Hana Kappa) every weekday when we lived there. Whenever one of the schools I worked for had a Halloween party, there would be at least 2-3 kids in kappa costumes.
