    This is all I've been about these days XD what i know already, i have to say huli jing are my favorite mostly because they're not usually seen as evil blood suckers or malicious tricksters and have very decent (and cute) stories, at least those i've read. Also, i've been very intrigued with the idea that they are seen as an in between demons and humans and the idea that all living beings strive to be humans if not immortal. Idk if you've mentioned this in your past videos too but it is also believed Tame no mae was the same fox spirit, consort Daji, that brought the Shang Dynasty to ruin by seducing the emperor Zhou of Shang

    @@cakertaker_1013 yeah the Daji -> Tamamo no Mae lore does exist. It also says she became other figures in other stories. I don't think the original stories had that intent though.

    The reason the foxes associated with Inari are considered benevolent is likely because the main food for foxes is small mammals. If you are a society that relies on storing grains then things like rats and mice are a very large problem. So the presence of animals that eat them would be seen as a blessing. Like cats in Egypt or cobras in India.

    that was the thing with what was mentioned before about japan already having their own fox beliefs before being influenced by china (especially since their beginning religions was animism and shinto), i remember reading that it was related to how foxes would eat the vermins and rodents detrimizing their fields so ofc they would begin to worship them in someway like you said. Now that i think about it, i'm pretty sure the negative/mischievous connotations related to kitsune now mostly came from china correct me if i'm wrong

    The myths all around the world that portray foxes as cunning comes from the ancient Egyptian god "set", which was the god of cunning, trickery, chaos, disorder and envy. He was portrayed as a jackal and a fox in Egyptian arts. Egypt simply exported its religious beliefs to other parts of the world.

    2:11 The good Kitsune are called Zenko and serve gods. Rather than tricking humans, they are nice to them. The evil Kitsune are called Yako and they're usually those tricksters. When a Kitsune reaches 1000 years of age and grows its ninth tail, it turns into a Tenko, a godlike fox (Tenko are the most "elite" of the Kitsune, kinda like how corporate workers with the most experience get promoted to higher ranks). This may have been derived from the Huli Jing belief presented at 5:26. Tamamo no Mae might have been a Tenko because she was insanely powerful, had nine tails and golden fur (a Tenko's trademark feature is indeed golden fur). Judging from her nature, she must have been born as a Yako.

  • @simuelthomas3257

    @simuelthomas3257

    For the Zenko point you mentioned, the Senko San anime is an example of a good fox who helps people. Thus, the name is also a play on the trope. As for Yako, the bad fox, the character from the show Toilet Bound Hanako Kun, fits the bill for a bad fox who tricks people. While it's just a reference, it does add up to the mythical points about the kitsune.

    Zenko Ranks from highest -> Lowest: Kuuko, Tenko, Senko. Different colors of Zenko: Kinko, Ginko, byakko/shirogitsune aka Myobu, Kokuko/kurogitsune. There are apparently 2 earthly fox ranks that both Zenko and Yako can attain which are Chiko and Ashireiko. Ashireiko are apparently young foxes in the first 100 years of their life and look like ordinary non-magical foxes. After 100 years they rank up to Chiko, which are clearly magical. Yako are unable to pass the Chiko stage due to their wickedness, while Zenko are able to surpass it and become Senko at around 500 years. Senko becomes a Tenko at 1000 years, Tenko becomes a Kuuko at 3000 years.

    Fun gumiho story I read as a child! I think the title was "fox sister", where the fox shapeshifted into a baby girl (as in newborn baby) and acted like a child that was thrown away, in front of this family's house The house wasn't that wealthy, and they didn't have neighbors either The family had two sons, and they were happy to have a daughter The daughter grew up and everything was alright, until they noticed their livestock was dying one by one The family blamed the main character, the younger brother for not taking good care of the livestock and as punishment he was ordered to stay up all night to guard the livestock He fell asleep, and he was waken by the noise of his sister shoving her hands up one of the cow' anus, then pulling out its liver, and eating it. (Gumihos are commonly known for eating livers more than hearts, at least for me and my family) He pretended to be asleep of course to save his own life The next day he told the family what he saw but as they loved all their children, they defended their daughter One day our main character returns home from work to find his sister ate his parents and his brother's liver and they were all dead I can't remember the exact story, but his brother or someone outside the house gave him three magic marbles or balls? To help him defeat the fox He eventually killed his sister, i can't remember how exactly though, it's been a while since i heard that story :(

    Another short fun one i read when i was 10 or something i think There once was a hard working handsome farmer, and he was going to get married to his beautiful future bride He went to the mountains/forest to get some wood, and on the way he returned he met a beautiful women asking him to stay for the night as it was dark and dangerous He gladly accepted, no they did not have seggs this is a children's book calm down He woke up in the middle of the night to find her sharpening a kitchen knife with nine tails and sharp claws, when he got caught she ran at him, but he managed to shut the door tightly one of her taiks got stuck So he ran back home and lived a normal life And then his marriage day happened When he was about to meet his bride, instead of one, he saw two arguing who was the real one They asked him to choose, and as he was trying, he saw one of the bride's dress was a bit torn on the ends He stabbed that bride and revealed it was a fox, it ran away as the town tried to catch it and he happily got married with his real wife Again, this was years ago, so i do not remember the exact story but it was fun

    I looked into it also. I believe Sionnach was also considered the Goddess of foxes specifically. They also seem to be associated with Brigid somewhat. Sionnach Sidhe are eerily similar. Energy pearl, shapeshifting abilities, vast knowledge, and clairvoyance are some of the qualities of the Sionnach. Information on them seems to be very hard to come by though. There are similar fox spirits in a variety of Native North American and South American folklores. Although extremely rare, there are people in the United States and Canada whom have claimed to see fox spirits in modern times. My cousin and I saw something while visiting Canada back in 2005, and I have only recently figured out what it might have been. I'm pretty positive it was a kiko.

    Some more information on the Hulijing :) 9-tailed foxes can transform into a woman at the age of fifty, as said. At 100 years old, it becomes a beauty or a female shaman (as said), and aso becomes very farsighted and can know about something that is happening a thousand miles away. At a thousand years old, the fox connects with the Sky and becomes a Heavenly Fox (Tianhu 'skyfox'), gets canonized by the Heavenly Court, and obtains the Immortal rank. Hulijing also gains wisdom by swallowing treasures of Heaven and Earth, finding a good place to work at self improvement, or following a Taoist monk or wise person to learn abilities. Foxes are the Yin element(?), and they need a lot of 'Yin air' (阴气, yinqi) containing the moon's essence to work at self improvement, which is why sometimes they are depicted as worshiping the moon. Every 100 years, it is said, a major natural disaster happens. If a Hulijing could go through it smoothly, it will grow a new tail. The reason why there are so few hulijing is attributed to the fact that many foxes are not perseverant in their self-cultivation and wisdom gaining. I never knew they had balls too, though, thought it was only a kumiho/kitsune thing. 7:30 lol this rhymes :)

    I did read "Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio" by Pu Songling (XVIII century chinese collection of supernatural tales). That book contains an absolute shit-ton of huli jing stories and very fun and enjoyable to read. So, judging by that book, there was as many male werefoxes as female. And not all of them was malicious. There was stories about genuine love between a man and a fox girl, they was married had children, grow old and died together. There was even a rumors about some famous talented people in old China, that they was descendants of huli jing. In some stories, people befriended with foxes and helped each other. There was, of course, also tales of malicious foxes, that drained the lifeforce out of people to make themselves immortal and eternally young (common huli jing only lived as much as humans). And it was not only female foxes who feed on the men's lifeforce, but also male foxes similarly seducing women.

    There's a story in Japan and China of an emperor causing unrest by making bad decisions on behalf of a consort. In both the stories I know the blame is shifted onto the consort, claiming she is a kitsune/huli jing. This shows the mistrust of women in power and the infalibility of imperial families. Despite the emperor making the decisions, they are considered the victim.

  • @angeliquewu8318

    @angeliquewu8318

    Can confirm. However, it's not the same story, as you make it sound like. In China, the story is called the Investiture of the Gods and it's about the consort Daji, who the stories say was a fox spirit sent by a goddess to seduce the last Shang dynasty emperor and distract him from court affairs because he acted lecherous towards her or something. Idk about the Japanese case. Also, just in general, if a woman distracts an emperor from his courtly duties, then she's called a huli jing (huli = fox, jing = spirit).

    There's another K-drama which has a much more traditional depiction of a gumiho, not the modern fanciful depiction popularized by anime. Grudge: The Revolt of Gumiho (2010). The elements of a deceptive fox marrying a human, wanting to become human, liver eating, and killing (lots of killing) are jumbled up a bit, but it's all in there. it's a tragedy, so don't watch it expecting to feel good at the end. It's almost horror, but told from the POV of the killer (the gumiho) as the protagonist (her kills are motivated by revenge).

    I'm fairly certain that the fox pearl that gumiho carry is somehow associated with 여의주 cintamani wish-stones from Buddhism and possibly Taoism, where orbs are often sources of knowledge and power. When one swallows a gumiho's yeouiju pearl, it's written that you should face the sky so you can absorb knowledge of the cosmos and heaven, but boy who's tale is mentioned in the video was flipped over and stuck looking at the ground and so he only gained geomantic knowledge of earth - which was still powerful in its own right. There's also other legends of a giant two or three headed gumiho that I believe originate from Jeju island, which has a lot of wacky mythology compared to the rest of the Korean peninsula. Thanks for covering this!

    Another fun fact about kitsune spirits are that after 1000 years, the kitsune spirit gains its 10th tail and becomes what's known as a "Tenka," or "Celestial Fox". After which if the spirit decides, they can become one of Inari Okami's divine messenger foxes by discarding their tails for 3 white/golden tails that shine brightly and white fur, as the white fur is a symbol of divine messengers. These kitsune spirits are especially powerful. Another quick note is that a nine-tailed kitsune normally is called "kyuubi no kitsune," meaning "nine-tailed fox," (kyuu meaning 9, bi meaning tail). So you could say sanbi no kitsune to refer to a three-tailed kitsune. A lot of the trickster backstory for foxes come from rice farmers blaming foxes for the destruction of their rice fields when in reality, the foxes were merely hunting there for animals that were eating the crops. Some of these foxes were even known to have become Inari Okami's spirits and also why foxes became associated with Them in the first place for protecting what Inari Okami presides over. Thanks for the trivia Da Ji, interestingly enough when the Huli Jing gets their 9 tails they're called jiuweihu 九尾狐 which share the same characters as kyūbi 九尾.

    Oh interesting, Ara from Elsword has a Gumiho spirit (I dont remember the details), which make sense since is a Korean game, but I never really though of that much, especially because being a while since I stoped playing that game XD But was able to transform and I remember her have the white tails with red details on her face. Also I though would have mentions of Da Ji on this video, since you commented about Tamamo.

    I just had to comment that although Huli Jing (狐狸精)does mean 'Fox Spirit' in mandarin, the more accurate term is Jiu Wei Hu (九尾狐) "nine-tailed fox". The former is used to refer to a foxy lady (the sexy kind) and the latter refering to the demon spirit kind.

    We have "foxes" (translated as "musang" in Malay) on Borneo, but those "foxes" usually refers to the Flying foxes and certain species of civets(a feliforme, not even a canine). There are no taxonomically correct foxes on Borneo(especially since the island is not part of mainland Asia) I'm afraid only some bears, tigers and a crocodiles are spiritual to us, not the smaller creatures(aside from arthropods like spiders and Centipedes)

    Hi Linfamy!! Can you make a video about wolf symbolism in japanese culture and religion? It seems that in pop culture such as in Sekiro or Princess Mononoke, wolves have great relevance or importance. I don't know if it is something from nowadays or if wolves are in great steem in shintoism and buddhism. I can only remember the Ainu venerating wolves, but I can't tell from other places from Japan

    Yes Amaterasu from Okami and/or Kamui/muy, the golden wolf? Amaterasu is the sun god(de)(ss) and Okami means host(ess), hair, wolf and god? Guess they are puns and strung together synchronistically?
