    This reminded me of a family friend (who is an avid practitioner of Nichiren Buddhism) who first introduced me to Buddhism, and explaining to me that Buddhism is like a bunch of different schools. Nicheren challenges my conviction of not falling into the No-True-Scotsman fallacy (doubly so as they do) in regards to Buddhism. My family was Nicheren for a very short amount of time (was like 6-8 at the time). At the very least visited their organization and I remember that chant. Can’t say we stayed for long though. I wasn’t really quick on the draw for why one would spend so much time worshiping a book instead of reading it. Fast forward years later and I’m in Boot Camp, on Sunday there are various religious services and am delighted to see Buddhism as one. And who is in charge but the Soka Gakkai (nicheren lay organization). Now at this point I’m reasonably learned in Buddhist teachings amongst many sects and am internally turning into the Spanish Inquisition as they preach doctrines exceptionally at odds with even general Buddhist thought. What’s more tragic to me is that this is likely the first time many of the recruits going through basic training are seriously exposed to Buddhism. Even the hierographic accounts of Nicheren’s life they were promoting failed to not make him look like a jerk.

    I'm a bit confused with this guy's attitude: doesn't the Lotus Sutra say that all Buddhist practices and rituals are skillful means for reaching enlightenment? To me, that means that no matter which branch of Buddhism I might follow, I will always become a Buddha.

  • @clayhamilton3551

    @clayhamilton3551

    Nichiren taught that all other skillful means are like rivers that flow to the ocean but the Lotus Sutra is the ocean itself. Which is explained in the Lotus Sutra chapter two, expedient means. He also taught the concept of becoming a Buddha in this lifetime, rather than being reborn eventually into a Buddha… and that chanting the title of the Lotus Sutra will awaken your Buddha nature in your present self.

My grandma converted to nichiren around this time and by the time she moved to the US, she was a devout buddhist and held meetings for it once a week. My mom grew up with nichiren buddhism kind of forced on her and she doesn't like it. She said it was a money-cult and chanting the sutra for like an hour was boring. There are currently different schools based on Nichiren teachings, at least one of which does exactly what you say, but not all of them are like that. I've been attending a local Nichiren temple, that follows the Nichiren Shu school, and nobody told me that chanting the Odaimoku by itself will lead people to enlightenment. Of course they teach the Lotus Sutra more than other ones, but any of the other schools you mentioned have a favourite sutra of their own, that they base their doctrine upon and it is very likely that they too thought their ones were the best, isn't it?. For that matter, Nichiren himself in his letters (which I read myself) emphasised the importance of studying all Sutras, and the induist teachings as well. I also think worth mentioning that Nichiren emphasised a certain chapter of the Lotus Sutra, that is The Dragon King's Daughter, where it is said metaphorically that everyone, in spite of their low condition in life, can attain enlightenment with their own sensibility without having to be reborn as a (male) monk of high rank. That's why a lot of his followers were peasants. Morover, many letters by him that have been preserved are responses to women where he tells them that they have the same potential of other beings to attain enlightenment, whereas the traditional heian buddhism was so mean to women to the extent of forbidding them from learning chinese and reading the holy sutras by themselves. He also used to criticise monks that did not live the true monastic life and got married, lived in luxury, eat meat and got involved in politics out of ambition. Also speaking of politics, you surely remember that the powerful monasteries of the time had been deeply involved in politics at least since the Nara period, many centuries before; they had their own armies that would often intervene in dynastic fights to back their favourite pretender, which sometimes would bring unfortunate retribution, such as the burning of Nara by the Heike clan on the brink of the Genpei war. The retired emperor Shirakawa, some 100 years before Nichiren's birth, used to say " though an emperor, three things escape my power, the outcome of the dice roll, the river floods and the monks of mount Hiei". Still sure no politics?

    _and become a muslim out of spite_ That's how muslims are born... I know because I nearly became one myself. I'm Austrian and thus catholic. Our church did pretty much everything on the list of what to never ever do, if you want to keep your followers. My parents moved to Germany and there I was constantly treated as a second class citizen and got constantly reminded that no matter how hard I try to integrate myself, I'll always remain an Austrian to them. I got told many times that I do not belong here and should go back; that we are inferior and so on. It once even came close to a fight for no good reason. Just that my mother told them that they were breaking the law and in order to protect us, I seriously drew my knife to dissuade them. On top of it all, my parents didn't get along and their relatives hated each other with a passion and I was the one in between... The nicest people I met back then were muslims. You could have called them at 03:00 for help and they would come! Plus my neighbours tried to match me with a beautiful woman (though there were some issues with that deal...). I was really tempted back then despite being more of an atheist.

    Thank you for having enough presence of mind to actually go into WHY he was that obsessed. Too often, videos like this are "He was just evil for the sake of being evil because he liked being evil". While in reality, that description fits absolutely no one. No one is evil for the sake of being evil. They're evil because they either think it necessary for some greater good they perceive, or because they deny that it's evil altogether

    Love your videos and would love to see you tell the tale of the founder of my former home, Date Masamune aka One-Eyed Dragon of Ōshu. He founded Sendai in Tohoku Pref (NE Japan)
