It's curious to consider the fact that regardless of the different cultures in the world, some "rituals" are very similiar, such as the association between 'geographical location-magic powers' (ex. people making rituals at crossroads) and 'animal sacrifice-magic powers' (ex. also people making rituals at crossroads).

People don't forget about it, They are called Si Xiang "Four Images" for a reason. Huang Long ("Ouryu") is a much later addition and was only included in specific circumstances. The Four Images are the gods of the four quarters of the sky. There was no center god, the center of the sky was the pole star and the Northern Bushel (ie Big Dipper) (ie inside of Xuan Wu / Genbu). A couple thousand years after the Si Xiang appear, Huang Long was created to bring the Si Xiang in line with Wuxing theory. The Four Images are probably the oldest still worshipped and identifiable Chinese gods. Huang Long / Ouryu has existed for substantially less than half as long (possibly less than 1/3rd as long) as the other four and remains an optional addition. For that matter the inclusion of Huang Long / Ouryu seems to be even less common in Japan than in China. Either way when talking about house location in Fengshui the house is in the central position so there is no reason to mention in it.

4:50 I think they put Kyoto between these four features because it is strategically, agriculturally and economically the best location you can build a city on. Mountain is a defensive position, complex food-production chains require both running and still water and road is essential for trade. The exact same theory you can find in Sun Tzu's Art of War or Machiavelli's Prince. These wizards were knowledgeable on that principle and so were advising nobles on where to build their castles and homes so that they can thrive. Everything in culture has a purpose.

In really curious on how their actual service was embedded into the more mystical practices. For example, omnyoji probably took up the role as surveyors, fire/crime forensic analysts, crime analysts, behavioral psychologists, and probably geospatial-temporal analysis via cartography and timekeeping. Something that ancient mystics had was an inclination towards observation (aka, super high Perception checks). So, they probably noticed things whenever they arrived on site and had a mixture of theoretical superstitious solutions on top of any actual real advice. Even the famed duel between Seimei and Doman sounds like a duel based on theory hidden in esotericism. For example, it’s normally framed as Doman cheating and Seimei supernaturally countering him. Or it could’ve been Seimei knowing what kind of person Doman is, knowing he would pull a trick, and then making a prank out of it. Or, he probably he knew about issues of rat infestations and knew that no matter what Doman did, rats would eventually get inside it. It’s one of the fun things of looking back in time in addition to reading fiction/fantasy. Getting an idea of the “realness” of things that is no longer applicable to our lives now. (Like how kids probably think of us and cassette tapes) Edit: Holy crap, I just realized they also tried to figure out the gender during pregnancies. I demand every parent planning a gender reveal party consult an omnyoji before you blow up a whole forest!

Abe and Kamp used the same Kanji? 👹👺 Thank you once again for the great content! Speaking on sacrifices wasn't there a set of nursery rhymes from Japan that pointed out also towards the performance of human sacrifices in the ancient past of Japan? Plenty of anime like Dusk Maiden and Amnesia as well as Jigoku Shoujo use this quite vividly so I wonder what the historical sources have to say of that Sorry this got dark really suddenly! 😝
