Yoga for Dizziness and Vertigo - Yoga with Rachel

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Yoga for Dizziness and Vertigo is intended to help alleviate the effects of dizziness, vertigo, or other balance/vestibular disorders.
Over a year ago, I was in a car accident. I was rear-ended at a red light. I experienced whiplash. A month following my accident, I started to experience bouts of dizziness and vertigo. I had days where I would literally have to crawl across the floor because the whole room was spinning. It was terrifying!
In spite of how I was feeling, I had a strong desire to maintain my at-home yoga practice. Therefore, I decided to learn some safe ways to move on my mat. I explored movements that reduced my symptoms. I was able to get on my mat at least twice a week even though I was feeling off.
For this practice, I share some of the movements and stretches that I explored when my symptoms were present.
We stay low to the ground. The movements will be slow and gentle. I provide options throughout this flow. I offer suggestions for props that you can use to support you as you move.
NOTE: If something does not feel right, back out of the posture. Listen to your body! You know yourself the best.
I hope that this flow provides you with some level of relief from your symptoms.
Also, know that you are not alone! I got your back!

@@TheChickP83 This is a great question. I recommend speaking to a healthcare provider before beginning an exercise program or a class (including this one). There are yoga poses that are not recommended for certain trimesters. There's information online that can answer those questions. With that said, you and your body are unique. So I would personally speak with someone that knows your health history. I hope this helps!

Just wanted to thank you. I’m a 54yr old man and have been healthy most of my life up until the last few months. I have now been diagnosed with Afib and am now suffering from what they think might be maniere’s disease. The Vertigo has been absolutely debilitating. It certainly is depressing. But thank you for the videos and my love and compassion go out to you and your battle with this awful problem. Have a blessed day!

Hi William! First off, my heart goes out to you. Vertigo can change one's life so quickly. I've found that breathwork practices, exploring different grounding techniques for anchoring (such as holding an object in your hand and focusing on how it feels, the shape, texture, etc.), repeating affirmations to remind myself that I am safe (even though it may not feel that way at the time), as well as exploring self-compassion. I wish you all the best! Thank you for being here and for taking the time to leave this lovely message. I appreciate you! Take care 🤗

Hi 🤗 First off, I am so sorry to hear that you've been experiencing vertigo since January. It is so challenging! My heart goes out to you. Fortunately, the vertigo I was experiencing subsided. I do experience dizziness every now and again, but it is not too bad. For me, the vertigo episodes were caused by migraines and tight neck/trap muscles. In addition to this, my neurologist said that the vertigo was the result of my sympathetic nervous system being heightened due to the car accident I was in. Breathwork practices, mantras (like "I am safe"), self-hugs, guided meditation practices, and listening to my body helped me as I worked through the symptoms. I hope that you get some relief soon 💕 Feel free to keep me posted. Wishing you all the best 🙏

I had my first attack of vertigo last Saturday, i feel sick with nausea and vomiting. This is my first time dealing with it, so i took a check up because i dunno what to do at first. My doctor gave me prescribed medication. And, also advised me to do the epley maneuver and other exercises for vertigo. I was looking forward to all yoga's i could get here in yt and i found yours. Thank you for this.

Hi Miri, thank you so much for reaching out and for your comment. I hope that you are feeling better 💚 I am happy to hear that you went to see your doctor right away. I hope that the medication has helped ease your symptoms! Yes, I agree with doing the Epley maneuver to assist with vertigo. If you find that it is not working, I recommend speaking to your doctor about seeing a balance specialist who can do the Epley maneuver for you as they can check for any movement in your eyes to suggest that there may be crystals in the ear. Also, certain physiotherapists and chiropractors can do this as well (one's that specialize in vestibular rehab). There's so many great online resources for vertigo! I hope that you find this class useful 😊 Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns. I am not a medical professional; however, I have explored dizziness and vertigo solutions quite extensively. I just want you to know that you are not alone, and I am confident that you will find a solution 😊 Take good care 🙏

From my own experience, it is hard for others to truly understand when they haven't experienced the sensation for themself. Showering myself with love through self-care practices. Tending to my nervous system through yoga, meditation practices, somatic work and breathwork. These practices helped cultivate feelings of safety within my mind and body. I see that you are already doing that by joining this yoga class! Awesome!!! Each day and moment will be different 💜 Feel free to skip child's pose and explore a comfortable seat of your choosing. You can focus on the breath. Or if it feels good, you can lay on your back (resting your head on a pillow) and then hug the knees in towards your chest. Place your hands on your knees. This is like child's pose, but on the back body. You may find that this option feels better. I am proud of you for showing up 😊 Take good care!

Hi Uma, I am just seeing your other comment here. I appreciate your feedback regarding this class. Yes, migraines can interfere with our comfort and ease in various postures. If you ever come to a posture that you feel is worsening a migraine or just doesn't feel good, you can always make your way to a cross-legged seat and focus on your breath. Breathing in and out. The breath can be such a useful tool when experiencing migraines and headaches. Sending so much love your way 💜🙏

@@umasingh3465 Hi Uma. This is a really great question. What I suggest is based off of my own experiences and something that I found useful in my journey. I personally find guided meditation practices useful especially with insomnia. Whenever I had a bad vertigo episode, I found it very challenging to ground myself which then impacted my quality of sleep. I started to try some guided meditation practices (about 5 minutes in length) before bedtime, and that seemed to help quite a bit. It can also help to listen to some soothing music before bed, as well as taking a break from screens. What worked for me, may or may not be useful for you. With that said, it could be worth trying. If you decide to meditate, you can choose to keep your eyes open if that feels better, and you can sit on a piece of furniture if you feel more grounded in a chair versus being on a yoga mat. My heart goes out to you, and I do hope that you start feeling better soon!

I have been fighting bought of vertigo off and on for the past year. When I have a vertigo spell I'm normally down for a couple weeks. It really hits me hard. I tried your video for the first time today and I would really like to do more. I have three children , 2 that are type 1 diabetics. So they need me for a lot. I push myself to get things done. I make myself do it through a spell. Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Heather 😊 Thank you for being here and for sharing some of your story with me. First off, I am so sorry to hear that you have been experiencing bouts of vertigo for the past year. On top of that, caring for your children. My heart goes out to you. I am not a medical professional, but I can share some of the things I tried to help manage my symptoms. If it is available to you, I recommend speaking to a healthcare professional, such as a family doctor, as they can provide referrals to for you to see a specialist(s) and/or run tests to hopefully help you understand what is causing the vertigo. It could be related to the inner ear, so a scan of the ear canal would be helpful (just to make sure everything is functioning as it should). Vertigo can also stem from the neck. Again, if it is available, it may be a good idea to see a physiotherapist that specializes in vestibular rehabilitation. When I experienced vertigo, I would drink a ginger and honey tea. When I was having a good day, I would boil some water in a big pot with a few cut up pieces of ginger and allow that to boil for at least 20 minutes. I would then stir in some honey and put the tea in a container (you can leave the ginger chunks in there). I would then drink this tea (hot or cold) whenever I was feeling dizzy. I found that the ginger helped with the nausea and the dizziness lessened. I mention it in this video, repeating mantras, such as "I am safe," was useful. It served as a reminder that I am okay and that I would get through this spell. Listening to your body is another strategy. I know that this is easier said than done! If you have a moment or two throughout your day, I invite you to sit down and just take a few breath cycles. You can keep your eyes open and look down and past your nose. Focus on the breath. It may even help to repeat in your head, "breathe in...breathe out..." The breath is a great tool for grounding. Finally, you can keep a journal of your day. This journal can help you pinpoint whether something in particular triggers the vertigo. This could be an activity, something you ate, a time of day, sleep, etc. A journal can be very useful if you decide to speak to a healthcare professional regarding the bouts of vertigo. Thank you for reaching out to me. I hope that these suggestions are useful. I am so sorry that you are experiencing this. Please know that you are not alone in this! Sending love and light your way 💜🙏

Hello dear, how are you? A month and a half ago I had my first vertigo attack. It was scary and really unpleasant. I went to a physical therapist and he put the crystals back in place. For me it's the left channel. Since then I've been really afraid to practice yoga lest it catch me in some challenging position, maybe I'll fall and break an arm or a leg or fall on my head. And at night I'm afraid the attack will come because I'm pregnant. I see that you practice yoga. I would love for you to share your experience with me. And have you found a drug that completely prevents seizures. Thank you .

Hi there! First off, thank you for sharing some of your story with me. I am happy to hear that you sought support from a physical therapist! I can understand why you would experience feelings of fear in relation to movement, such as yoga. Speaking from personal experience, the best thing that I could do was send messages of safety to my nervous system. I accomplished this through meditation practices, breathwork practices, affirmations ("I am safe in my mind and body," "my body is healing from the inside out," etc.), and self-hugs to create a sense of connection and safety in my mind and body. Once I started to feel more grounded, connected and secured, I explored gentle stretches and yoga poses that felt good in my body. I explored graded exposure. In time, I resumed all movement without fear of symptoms coming on. I didn't have to take any meditation for what I was experiencing. The bouts of dizziness and vertigo were caused from an over-stimulated nervous system following a car accident. The reason why we experience dizziness and vertigo varies from person to person and case to case. What worked for me, may not work for someone else as their nervous system is completely unique to them. I highly recommend speaking to a healthcare practitioner to see what graded exposure to movement could look like for you. They will likely be able to provide more guidance as to what types of movements you can explore. I wish you all the best in your journey 💗 Take good care 🙏🤗

Hi Rachel 😊 I was diagnosed with right sided BPPV and have been down for coming up on three weeks. I've tried some maneuvers, Epley included. The Epley made me feel so much worse for days and have made me afraid to trigger this again. Laying flat on my back and turning my head to the right really triggers it. Should I avoid doing that if I try this exercise or not be so afraid of triggering some dizziness?

  • @YogawithRachel

    @YogawithRachel

Hi 😊 Firstly, I am so sorry to hear that you are experiencing vertigo. I am happy to learn that they have determined what is causing the vertigo episodes so that way treatment can begin! That's great news! I recall my family doctor and chiropractor stating that when doing the Epley maneuvers yourself, it is very likely that you will trigger vertigo. Breathing through it can help. I've been told that Epley is very effective for those with BPPV. Have you had a practitioner do this maneuver for you? In relation to this practice, if at any point you feel dizzy or off balance, back out of the posture and come to a comfortable seat of your choosing. Focus on your breathing. The intention behind this practice is to help lovely individuals like yourself feel loved, safe and supported. This practice is very gentle for those experiencing dizziness and vertigo. With that said, the reasons why we experience these symptoms vary. So, a posture or movement may work well for one person, but for another, it could trigger some symptoms. So as you move through this practice, listen to your mind and body. Return to your breath and know that you are not alone. I hope that this helps. Sending you a virtual hug and I hope that you feel better soon 💚

@@YogawithRachel Thank you so much for your response! I can tell that you are truly a unique and highly empathic person. A doctor did the Epley on me, but she didn't have any experience with it and I don't hink she did it correctly. I will go to an experienced chiropractor next time. Completed a full days work today and I am pretty relieved. Going slow and steady. Will do your exercise tonight and cross my fingers for tomorrow. Again, thank you SO much!! 🥰🙏

@@frydiskilmer358 You are so welcome! Another useful resource that you can look into is seeing an ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat specialist) if you haven't already. Oftentimes, they can refer you to a specialist that can perform the Epley maneuver and can run other tests related to the inner ear. Just a thought! Good on you for completing a full day of work! Take it easy! Also, feel free to let me know how the class goes for you! 💚 Take care 🤗
