Neck Exercises for Dizziness | Neck Dizziness | Dr. Jon Saunders
Neck dizziness is a diagnosis by exclusion which makes it a difficult problem to diagnose. However, more people are suffering from cervicogenic dizziness or cervical vertigo and the need for skilled clinicians to recognize this as a potential cause is important.
In this video, Dr. Jon Saunders will show you some neck dizziness exercises in a routine that will help get you started on your healing from cervical vertigo. Neck exercises for dizziness can be extremely helpful for those suffering from dizziness coming from the neck.
If you have been suffering from dizziness and not getting any answers, the playlist associated with cervicogenic dizziness posted below may just be what you need to ask your doctor to confirm whether your dizziness/vertigo may be coming from a problem in your neck.

I’ve been doing these exercises for 2 months now and I’m very thankful to report that my dizziness seems to have gone. I’m not stopping them of course and I’m waiting to see an ENT specialist. But it seems to have gone. I did find very tight muscles below the occipital area which I could release with pressure and turning. I’m so grateful for your work and help.

These have been amazing. I had issues in my head for so long and I wasn't sure what was going on and turns out it's all about the neck and trapezius muscles. I appreciate these videos they literally changed everything for me!

Hi Doc I have been having vestibular disorders from long covid since March I've been doing VOR therapy and my terrible dizziness is much better but I have lightheaded dizzy still. My PT has given me the first two stretches you show here for neck. I have added the rest of this routine and I'm blown away by how much better I'm feeling after only a few days. I'm also using your shoulder routine for my sore shoulders and that is a huge help. thanks for all this I know this will help me get recovered completely and back in action. thanks again guys like you and u tube is the help many need because I feel doctor's are to busy to give us all the help we need. Update: I've now been doing these stretches and exercises for six months now. I've added ocular routine as well as several other videos to ease vertigo/dizziness. It has helped tremendously but hasn't gone away completely. I still get severe dizziness when changing head elevation, laying down, sitting up, etc. After exercise routine in the morning dizziness fades through the day until by evening I feel almost normal. When I wake up the next morning, dizziness has returned. I don't know if it's something I'm doing in my sleep or what. These videos have helped. Grateful. Thank you!

It can also be caused by having a straight neck hence military neck or opposite c curve cervical spine. I’m dealing with military neck as we speak and my symptoms aren’t as horrible as they used to be. I found out about this condition by going to a chiropractor. I’m learning more as I go, but found that using a neck pillow and doing neck stretches have helped a lot. Just gotta do better in keeping up with my exercises. I hope you find relief soon enough and an answer to your condition.

This is such a brilliant video. I've been looking through all sorts of content from eye exercises to ankle proprioception and whatnot. But this stretching and strengthening routine for the cervical spine has been most helpful to see immediate results for myself in my coordination. I've been dealing with arm weakness, pins and needles, numbness in my fingers that all came from pain in my shoulders and my neck. After finally seeing what dermatomes are and realising that I'm likely dealing with a nerve in my neck that travels all the way down my arms this was the best solution for my coordination problems. Not to mention I slept on a towel last night thanks to the pillow video he made and it resulted in no pins and needles for me so far. Thanks Dr Jon! :D

How are you now? Normally spinning sensation is related to BPPV but maybe occipital issues can cause that too. It certainly causes me off balance and nauseous, not particularly spinning though. How are you doing tho, still doing the exercises? Saunders is a great dude.
Four Mondays ago I woke up with severe dizziness, tried ear crystals relocating exercises, no help. Then I found this video, so helpful. Three chiropractors have told me I needed to do neck exercises but I didn't. Starting my third week of daily exercise, SO helpful! My chiropractor fixes 75% of my dizziness problems every time I see him but the fix lasts only a few days. i need to do exercises on my own daily to combat this since I can't see the chiropractor every day. This is an excellent routine! I'll be doing these from now on. I feel that they do help. I suspect that the other 25% is due to other causes, probably ototoxins since this problem started right after they pumped me full of drugs in the hospital. Thanks Doc!!

It's not as bad as 5 years ago but it still affects my daily life. I've seen my doctor and ENT but they couldn't find any issues with me. Come to think of it, I notice on days where my neck and shoulder tension is really bad my vertigo seems to be bad on those days as well. Seems to be related. Gonna try your exercises. Thank you

I know my issues are caused by both anxiety and posture. I find that they kind of feed off eachother. Do you have any exercises like these but for tension in the back muscles?

Hello Dr. Jon. I found your KZread video two days ago when I was desperate with dizziness and my eyes bothered me to read more than a few minutes without getting more dizzy. After one treatment, I experienced a HUGE improvement! I have now done 3 treatments and am 90% better. I'm SO thankful that you made this routine available. And as a bonus, for years I've had hammering in my head when I lay down in bed (heart beat) and it's also almost gone! Thank you, Thank you!

It's more that many do not realize that the neck CAN be a cause of dizziness when other more common causes are ruled out.
I just started doing the stretches from video. I am a painter and when I do over head work I will experience dizziness. Doing this video has made dizziness go away..I am so thankful.

Hi Jon 🙂 I had a neck injury for around 6-7 years ago, and have been dizzy and fatigued ever since (go to bed at 7-8 pm every day)... The doctors in my country have given up on me, so I have for years, tried youtube, and articles... One of the latest channels I found was yours. have been all over the place, with dizzyness, but it seems/im guessing that I have both Cervical dizzynes and Earstones/BPPV, so that has made it really hard to distinguish the symptoms, depending on when I went to a doctor. Also the triggers for the dizzyness part, is triggered by, tiredness, allergy, coffee, alcohol. so It has been extremely hard to identify what happens and the cause. I work as a software developer, so I sit at the computer all day, which is not great for the neck. Anyways to my question, You mentioned that tiredness can "trigger" the cervical dizzyness, have you heard about allergies/Inflammation, as an trigger? I had a very specific episode, were I was starting on my Grass allergy vaccine (pills), and when I took it my HRV went like crazy, got hot, and when I got up, I got this dizzyness, that felt a lot like the dizzyness from the neck... And how does the tiredness impact? is it because the muscles get tired? I can lay in bed, in the day, because i'm tired, and looking at my phone, and I get CRAZY dizzy, like my body thinks I'm dying, and have to protect my heart. It takes a second, but it feels like all blood is going to the heart, and I get REALLY sweaty! I tried it once, were I did the Epleys, and on the fourth movement i didnt just get the feeling of the stones/crystals aligning, but the body just went into alarm mode! thought I was dying. So far i'm seeing a osteopath, every second week, which keep me up, but its hard.! And Now I found your channel, and your exercises, i'm adding those to my repertoire ! Thanks and sorry for the long message 🙂 have a great day, and keep up the great work

Did they help?
I have been dizzy for the past 2 months to the point I would feel my body would switch off in the middle of my walk. The doctor has suggested physiotherapy because he thought the reason is a neck. While Im waiting for my appointment I decided to try your exercises at home. Literally an hour before I couldn't walk outside without stopping to keep the balance every 5 minute. Now, just an hour later, I went out to get my laundry and felt LIKE A HUMAN. The surroundings weren't circling around me and I didn't feel like I will fall right now. Wow! I do feel though that the last set of exercises might, on the opposite, stress my bacl and shoulders too much which might lead to more problems since they activate when I try to push myself with a hand. Not sure how I feel about that part of the exercises, but either way... WOW

Hey, great video! I have been dealing with chronic dizziness for close to 15 years now that doctors have been unable to explain aside from suggesting that stress and anxiety might be a culprit. The cervicogenic dizziness symptoms sure seem to match up with mine, and I imagine my anxiety leads to neck tension issues. My dizziness has gotten loads better with Klonopin, which operates as a muscle relaxer to a degree, but I have noticed that weight lifting, bench press and bicep curls in particular, make my dizziness much worse. Usually the dizziness is pretty extreme days after weight lifting. Do you have any advice on how I can keep lifting weights without messing up my neck muscles and exacerbating my dizziness issues? Thanks for a great video, I'll be doing these exercises everyday!

Thank you for the prompt response. Is it possible that these exercises could make dizziness worse for a few days after they are done? I apologize if this was already addressed in another comment. Thanks!
I know we’ve talked before…………..I just had to start doing these again, I think it’s the only thing that helped. When the occipital lift adjustments were not. I’ve been sharing your videos. I’m kinda struggling with stress and anxiety again now, and can’t figure out if it’s triggering my neck to cause the nausea, or if it’s just my stomach alone from the anxiety and stress that causes me to need to eventualy vomit. I will feel a little better, but if I’m working on a machine, or problem, the harder it gets, the more nauseous I get and eventually have to bail to vomit. This has been off and on for a year. Any thoughts bud?

HELP! 🚨 As soon as I started doing this routine I began to feel that “drunk” dizziness. Why? I do think the vertigo I experience is related to my neck - I have that “nerd neck” going on + stiffness and discomfort. I can’t help but push my head forward + bad posture. My body is all kinds of messed up. 😞 I want to add, my dizziness happens about 2-3 times a day where I feel like I have to sit down for fear of passing out. It’s been happening for almost 4 weeks now since I started working again. Is there is specific pillow you’d recommend too? For relief

@@drjonsaunders What do I tell the though? I feel like doctors don’t know much about different things now a days so I don’t wanna be misdiagnosed.
Hi Dr. Jon, how often in a day can I do these sets of exercises especially the crane cervical flexion? I was diagnosed with cervical spondylosis and feeling dizzy and imbalance whenever i stand or walk. Went to neurology, ENT and checked with ophthalmologist as well to rule out other causes. ENT said no issues with my ears. EEG result from neurology report was normal. I have a mild migraine but very unusual to have dizziness. I am seeing a orthopaedic Physiotherapy and she's doing manual therapy and in addition to that i would like to try doing these exercises for my dizziness. Dizziness really debilitates my day to day activities especially my work. Thank you in advance.
