Yoel Romero faced former middleweight champion Chris Weidman on November 12, 2016, at UFC 205.
The first round was a showcase for the former champion. He opened the bout with a ton of kicks, chopping at his opponent’s leg and digging into the body. Before long, Weidman mixed in his first takedown attempt, landing a dump off the single leg. Romero sprung back to his feet without much trouble, but Weidman kept on him. After some time, Weidman’s punches began to land a bit as well, and Romero had little success landing much of anything.
Wherever the fight went, Weidman was in control.
After spending five minutes doing almost nothing, Romero turned it up in the second round. His counterpunches were far more accurate and active, and he was able to defend all of the single-leg takedowns. In the last two minutes, Romero looked for his own takedown and landed it. From there, he controlled the back clinch as Weidman attempted to scramble, tripping him back to the ground frequently.
Both men were a bit tired, but the final round would be the decider. Weidman came out looking to change things, attacking with a hard kick and pushing the pace. However, not even 30 seconds into the round, Weidman changed levels directly into a terrifyingly athletic flying knee.
That was all she wrote.
Romero won the fight via knockout in the third round and was awarded a Performance of the Night bonus. It was announced that Romero was next-in-line for a title shot, after owning an 8-match winning streak.

We'll never see a fighter like romero again, he's a monster
Yoel combination of explosiveness, flexibility and smoothness is something else
One of the most brutal KO’s. The Cuban missile crisis was something else 🚀
How did Romero not become a Champion?😢

His style plays poorly for those five round fights in which he does not get the finish, he stays very innactive saving energy for those sudden explosions of attacks, he's always dangerous but that allows his opponents to build an advantage on points.
If you try everytime for takedown , opponent will hit you like this.
Good reffing - yoel only got about 15 punches in after the knee.

I thoroughly enjoyed this fight
Weidman brought the wrestling out of Romero. And it was awesome to see. Chris had some damn good wrestling... yet Yoel was a few levels above.

For real, this fight could have easily been a 5 round championship main event.
Can you please upload Erick Silva vs Jon Fitch
the way romero moves in on leg feels kinda supernatural

Hell of a fight
Oh, so you want to wrestle… let me show you how it’s done 👏🏽
I don't think Chris was ever the same after that knee. The same way Anderson Silva was never the same after his first fight with Sonnen. Still great but not the same.

I think it was more so the fight with Rockhold there was multiple moments where the fight shouldve been stopped and it kept going into the next round.Herb Dean really dropped the ball on that one
That's NASTY WORK YOEL!!! YIKES!!!
Romero in his mind " Why man,he no beeg champeeon" 😂😂😂

i actually thought Romero killed him in that fight. KO was absolutely brutal
Wow! With that flying knee crazy knockout. Weidman's prime starts to drop. Overall a good win!.
I always enjoy watching Yoel 💥

What a great Romero fight! First class guy!

Ref made sure the dudes who were in piss cabin when the knee landed didn't miss much.
Weidman is returning in August after that leg injury be interesting to see how that goes 😂

That was a satisfying KO
Where was the ditty boxing
Romero is the man!
The fight should have been stopped after the knee and a couple of punches at best.
Tanque de guerra cubano 😅😅.
Porque ANDERSON SILVA E ROMERO NUNCA LUTARAM APESAR DE SEREM DA MSM CATEGORIA???
Don’t telegraph the same long distance take down all five rounds
Yoel getting a salute from Madonna at the end.

What ever happened to Yoel
Chris tried to take down a wrestler, totally crazy. All were canceled by Yoel.
Yoel Romero was a good fighter but not champ....because he strikes lesss and he blocks 80 % of his opponent strikes and less attacking
Didn't Weidman break Silva's shin bone?

Weidman was an idiot. He was doing well striking and instead he kept shooting for takedowns on a world class wrestler

wideman is such a boring pitter patter fighter
I'm sorry Weidman, I never meant to make you cry but tonight I'm cleaning out my closet.
Can’t get careless with Joel, cost Chris the fight
I remember this fight vividly. I was sooo excited to see this one too, the crazy part is that Weidman was dominating the match the whole time until the flying knee. He was even outwrestling Joel, which is an amazing thing in and of itself. He still *looked* good in this fight. Weidman was just coming back after losing his title to Luke Rockhold, and trying to get a big W over a top-5 ranked middleweight contender in order to earn another shot at the title. I also remember his infamous losing streak after the Rockhold fight. If I’m not mistaken, he went like 2-7 in his last 9 fights with the UFC. Tough break for him, he went out like a fucking warrior every time though. Much respect, Weidman.

Get your eyes check bruv, round 1 was very close but Romero dominated in round 2 in both striking and grappling. By round 3 Weidmans takedown attempts had been so repetitive that Romero was just waiting to unleash his flying knee

@@ceemor3404 I mean yeah, he controlled the pace and even forced a few (sloppy) takedowns, which is crazy considering Yoel is an entire level above Chris in terms of wrestling ability. What else would you call the rounds leading up to that KO? Weidman definitely would have been up on the scorecards, especially with the event itself being in his home-state. I’m a much bigger fan of Romero though, to be perfectly honest.

Mario Yamazaki is the worst referee ever. He should be fined and given criminal charges for his reckless referring.
I did not see this ever. Thought Weidman did well . His opponent did repeatedly punch Cris in the back of the head. While down an after he was removed as Wiedman was out. Lost my respect for that fighter.
