    Thanks for the video. This helped seal the deal on me pulling the trigger on a Rec Tec RT-700. 304 Stainless Steel, wi-fi PID controller, 40 lb hopper, and 6-year warranty with world class customer service. I wouldn’t expect a smoker at this price point to exhibit so much rust in less than a year.

    I've had mine for 3 years, and I do have rust spots. I too have the paint. I replaced the thermalcouple this week. You won't realize it's bad until you are cooking on it. I'd buy a spare. Mine was about $50. They are fairly simple to change, provided the grill is cold. Great video. Your pros and cons are spot on with mine. I love the ease of use and the finished product.

I've always been a stick burner or Weber Smokey Mountain type smoker guy~ Lately I've been wanting to try an Insulated Vertical Smoker from LSG and now I saw this video but always been leery of pellet smokers being I like a nice bark on my briskets and dont know if a pellet smoker can do that!

    Hi Ryan, Loved your review on the YS640. I've been a Green Egg guy since the mid 80's when they were clay cookers before they became ceramic and they were red not green. I bought my LGE from Ed Fisher who is the founder of the Green Egg. He started out in a little strip shopping area off of Clairmont Rd and Buford Hwy in Chamblee GA. I have had 3 Green Eggs and will always have one. In my opinion, nothing cooks a steak better than the Green Egg. But, I do love BBQ cooked low & slow... and I needed more versatility for larger cooks and low & slow heat control. I did as you did... research! For nearly a year the Yoder pellet smoker seemed to have the advantage with its versatility and quality of how it was made. Also, made in the USA. Well, I bought one in late July, 2018 and so glad I did! The YS640 is built like a tank! I bought it with the competition cart because I have to move it around and it is a beast to move. I have cooked Briskets, ribs both pork and beef, chicken, turkey and ham. I'm called the Pitmaster of my neighborhood and owe it all to Yoder. This cooker/smoker is the best out there for quality and price even though it is pricey, it's worth it. The only draw back is as you said, the paint/rust problem. You can never leave it uncovered in the rain! But that alone would not stop me from buying it again. I'm very happy with this beast of a smoker/cooker and I use it as often as I can. Look forward to cooking on it every time. Cheers!

    WA Bennett Thanks for dropping a comment and checking the video. I’m glad you liked it. Watching it back I cringe at how robotic and one dimensional the review was. That said, I love the smoker and would buy it again. I’m actually looking at a ceramic cooker but thinking about the Kamado Joe. I love their design and thought behind the 4 ceramic plates and the attention to the chimney. Any thoughts?

    I love your review. This helped me decide on the 640 comp cart in December of 2018. After 10months, I love this smoker. The food is off the charts. Due to cost of pellets, I use my Weber performer for high heat sears. Briquettes are so cheap. That being said, I've grilled on it with removing the diffuser and it's great. The pellet dust acts like kitty litter if any grease gets to the bottom and misses the flame. This thing can get to high heat in less than 10min, where my Weber chimney takes about 25 minutes to heat up and ash over. If I need to cook quickly, I go with the Yoder. Temp control is excellent and locks in within 5 degrees either way for smoking. If I want a stronger smoke flavor, I use the amazen 5x8 tray and I can tell a difference in the amount of smoke flavor. Thanks for this video way back last year and helping me make this decision. My wife is a picky eater,and she's loved every thing that's come off this grill.

    Thanks so much for taking time to provide feedback. As you might have seen I get a lot of initial feedback but nothing long term. What has your experience been with regards to possible rust issues? This seems to be the portion of my review that pushes people away from going with a Yoder. Rust has been manageable with the new cover. I’m working on a two year follow up and would move to use your input if you’re okay with it. Anything you’d do different or anything you don’t like about the Yoder? What short comings (if any) have you seen. Thanks again for taking the time to reply. It’s greatly appreciated. Ryan

    @@ryanmwal I've only had one spot where grease ate away some paint. I almost always clean the grill with simple green, 50/50 that I mix myself. Also, I sprayed my cover with a whole can of scotch guard water repellent for outdoor furniture the day I bought the smoker and covered it. And, the grill sits under a covered deck. So a lot of variables working in my favor. I have a random orbit sander, and it's not that big of a deal to me to sand it down eventually and repaint it, but with only one small spot, it's not worth the effort yet. I might get one of those KZL front protectors when I do repaint it just to keep the paint fresh.

    Also, I recommend putting rubber wrist bands that support a cause on the door counterweight, this prevents metal on metal contact and reduces the wear on the paint in the back. Works great

    Let me add some experience to your research if you don't mind. Ii've been running a Traeger Lil' Tex for the last decade. What do I like? Well, I paid $750 for it and have replaced one hot rod and one fire pot since I have owned it. It sits out in the rain and snow 365 days a year. I have a hydrotuff cover for it and some old blankets. This pellet grill is insulated (there are newer half and whole insulated models. The blankets keep the temps up and cut pellet consumption in freezing weather. If it is raining/snowing, I operate the unit with the blankets over it. Rain can't drive through a wet blanket and the grill steams the triple folded blanket dry from the inside. I probably have half the rust on the unit as the Yoder in the video, but its covered in soot from the smoke which halted the rust dead in it's tracks. I do not grill on it and have no fantasy of doing so. Really the only thing I would want grilled is a steak. If I were to do hot dogs, I would let them sit at 200-225 sucking ins smoking good flavor and then set the grill for 375 and the outside will brown very quickly. Hot meat browns fast. I smoked steaks on the Traeger and went to sear them on the BBQ. No word of a lie, 10 second each side max or you'll totally burn them because they were already hot. This is why I bought the grill. High temp cooking blocks out the flavor and wood burned at high temps has no smoke smell to infuse the meat. What I don't like about the Traeger is the lack of a certain type of smoke flavor. Pellet grills operated in the high temperature range will have no smoke and you can smell the type of wood burning easily. At low temps they smolder and the flavor disappears but now a smoky flavor appears. This is why I set my Traeger for temp swings instead of stable temps. It dumps pellets that produce smoke and then temps rise and the pellets burn cleaner and produce their top notes of cherry/peach/hickory etc. BUT, there is no charcoal flavor or the flavor of burning wood only. So I put a cast iron smoking box in the Traeger and put a few chunks of charcoal and wood and a single hot briquette that slowly causes both to burn and produce the flavors that I miss. Since I am not going to grill because Like I said, I prefer to smoke a little and then brown meats by upping the temps. or if I just operate the unit at 375 which will cook hotdogs and the like quickly AND unattended, the Yoder doesn't have any extra pull for me. I personally would take a cheaper Traeger AND a Weber Smokey Mountain for the same money, if possible. Why? I don't think any Yoder or Traeger burning pellets can match a pulled pork or brisket out a Smokey Mountain. Anybody that is a big time enthusiast knows you'll have more than one smoker. Ribs? I think my offset stick burner would deliver a death blow to a pellet grill first and a WSM second. Having said all that a pellet grill is the ultimate in cooking in all weathers and produces foods with another element that cooking in a regular oven, just can't. Fire it up, drop the meat on and go back to what you were doing. Return and collect the meat. Eat the meat. People with no patience, kids, no cooking skills or who are generally short on time will turn out BBQ envied by all their gas grill buddies. Marinated meat? Nope. I get flavor driven to the bone. Gas grill people HAVE to marinate the meat and use rubs and sauces to get the flavor happening. Wings tossed in olive oil with salt/pepper and brown sugar. Put on the grill and let it smoke with hickory. To finish turn grill up to 300-325 to brown the outside. Best comment "I love the hickory sauce on these wings" My answer "There is no sauce..." Good luck. Pretty much no matter what you pick, better things will happen to your BBQ prowess.

    Well done. I’ve been a fan of the smokers with the fire box in the front or the back of the pit, but you gave me something to think about with this one by having the firebox on the left you can control where you want to direct or indirect grill. Great review. Thanks. I’m probably going to buy the competition 640 in the cart.

    Most grill or smoker reviews are completed right after unboxing, or at best, after two or three uses. Your review of the YS640 after a year of use was very thorough and of far more benefit than a review based upon virtually no use of the cooker itself. I am in the market for a new grill/smoker and was concerned about the paint and rust issue on the Yoders, but based upon your review, it seems like that is of little concern. Great job!

    @@ryanmwal Good point. I'm just saying I don't think you should regret not getting that competition cart. It's better to spend the extra $300 for the shelves and just deal with the weaker/cheaper wheels (since you're not moving it much anyway) than spend the extra $600 for the comp cart and now have the better shelves and better wheels + tie downs. Maybe I'm not looking at it right, but the comp cart seems like such a high mark up for what you get. And since most BBQ competitors look down on pellet smoking (wrongfully so), trying to market that grill as a "competition" cart in this day and age seems... disingenuous. Sure there are exceptions to the rule where a few people might get away with using a pellet smoker here or there, but I don't think they have fully pushed their way into the hearts and minds of traditional BBQ competitors... yet.

I contacted YS & they have no intention of putting a dump on their 20lb hopper. The least they could do is offer the 40lb hopper as an optional upgrade...but no. Still disappointed with all that rust though, that's hard to swallow at that price point regardless of performance. Would like to see stainless and porcelain enameled steel become more common on pellet grills. Rec Tec does this but they are not really in the same league otherwise.

    Excellent review. I greatly appreciated your opinions after owning for a year. I just got the 640 as a Christmas gift to myself. I love it so far and think the food that comes off it is way better than the master built electric smoker I had before. I splurged a little and got the stainless shelves and the comp cart. I don’t plan on going to any competitions, but I will want to transport it from time to time. I actually bought a rascal scooter carrier that hooks into my trailer hitch on my pickup. I can roll it right up and strap it down. Super easy. Thanks again for the video!

    Thanks for watching and taking time to leave a comment. I just finished a reverse sear steak on the Yoder and it turned out perfect. It was actually for a comparison video I’m putting together (sous vide vs reverse sear). I absolutely love the versatility of the smoker. There’s a part of me that wishes I would have gotten the comp cart but overall a happy camper. Thanks again for the comment. Happy smoking

    the paint is not a disadvantage. It's the opposite. It can actually be FIXED unlike powder coating or ceramic coating. The only people bitching about paint are people who have no clue what they are talking about. Get a rattle can of flat black stove paint and some sand paper and fix it as needed. We've done this for years with traditional offsets. This is a big boy pit so you need to grow up to own one. Or go buy a chinese traeger.

    Haha, we moved but it was nice while it lasted. I’m getting ready to post a follow up video in the next week. I do still like the Yoder. It does have rust issues if left in the elements but the new cover helps tremendously. That said if you invest in something expensive line a Yoder you should be willing to invest time cleaning and maintaining it. I manage any small rust spots once a year, when I do a deep clean. After that it looks brand new. If I had to do it again I’d hands down get the Yoder again despite some short comings. Only other grill I’d consider is the Kamado Joe Classic III, that thing is a beast. A little more hands on invest but a damn good option for half the price.

    I've had my ys640 for a couple months now and I have a concern that maybe you could help shed some light on. When direct grilling, does the juices and fats fall into the fire box and surrounding areas? Seems like it would make a big mess at the bottom of the smoker. I have yet to use the direct grilling feature because of this concern. Any tips or advice on cleaning/preventing mess when direct grilling?

  • @ryanmwal

    @ryanmwal

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hey Clayton, thanks for the comment. So I use my direct grilling feature pretty regularly. I was concerned about the same thing but don’t have too many issues. The question I’d have is do you have the two piece diffusion plate with the door. I think that definitely helps reduce the mess. The second is are you using grill grates (brand) not just standard grates. I use grill grates and found the help reduce the mess as they burn off most of the mess before it drips into the firebox. I think there would be much more of a mess without those specific grates. Hope you his helps.

    @@ryanmwal thank you so much for your response.. I do not have the two piece diffuser plate or the anodized aluminum grates. Lol I think a big part of it is the price of these things which you are well aware of. I've been trying to keep it clean and nice as much as possible using foil over the diffuser plate and even foil tins when i am cooking on the second shelf. I just wonder if i should just buy those extra components or just use my propane grill... it wouldnt be direct flame but its something I have to use. Again I thank you for getting back to me. I truly appreciate it. This was a great video by the way!

  • @ryanmwal

    Clayton, I follow a very similar style and yes this stuff is not cheap. For direct grilling I’ve moved back to my Weber charcoal but if I had a gas grill I’d use that. The flavor obviously doesn’t have as much smoke but it’s quicker and I don’t mind if it gets messy. I try to keep the Yoder as clean as possible ( Yoder cleaning video coming very soon) and because of that I’ve gone away from direct grilling unless it’s a big cooking event. I’m your shoes, I’d use the gas grill until I had the two piece diffuser plate and grill grates. Those two items will allow for easy, clean, direct grilling. If you don’t mind the mess dive in on the Yoder. I personally mind the mess. Cheers. Happy Grilling. And I truly appreciate the comments and conversation! Keep an eye out for the next Yoder video as soon as this hurricane passes.

    So, I have had my Ys640 for 6 months now and I have cooked steak, burgers, chicken on it using the grill grates and the temperature set from 400 to 500 degrees. A helpful tip is to spray a little nonstick like pan on the grates. It didn't make as big of a mess as I thought it would. No more messy than my propane grill I had. The grease does not affect the fire box itself because it burns the grease away. The only grease I have had to clean up was on each side or around the fire box a little. Nothing bad or labor intensive at all. I'm very happy grilling anything on it now. I have been smoking rib eye steaks at 160 for two hours on the top rack, then setting the temperature to 400 or 500 and seating them on each side for one minute, then resting for 10 min. Awesome!

  • @ryanmwal

    @ryanmwal

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hey there, thanks for the comment/question. I did, I looked at RecTec, Traeger, Camp Chef, all of the options. The issue I ran into was something like the RecTec and Traeger were the fire boxes were in the back middle. From all my research I decided I wanted something that could closely replicate an offset smoker. A stick burning offset seem to get the best reviews in turns of flavor, smoke, and results so I wanted something that could give me that without managing a fire. So many had back center fire boxes which changed the dynamics of the smoke distribution. Then when I found a pellet grill with an offset box it didn’t have the ability to do direct cooking. Don’t get me wrong, the Yoder isn’t perfect and there are things I’d do different but it was the best out there for what I was looking for. Do I think some of the other options are decent, absolutely. I think pellets in general are solid smokers. I like Traeger the least, materials seem thin and cheap. If $1000 is your budget I think RecTec is great. If you can swing the extra money for the Yoder I think it’s 100% worth it. Should you be prepared to clean and maintain the Yoder, yes. But it’s built like a tank. Side by side you see why it’s so much more. I’ve had friends buy yoders and they’ve all been happy they did. Looking back, I’d buy it again but could have been happy with other options if the Yoder was out of my budget. Let me know what you go with. I’m getting ready to get a Kamado Joe III, now that’s a cool grill.

    RaNDoM MaI we’ll the Yoder is a great option for smoking. It doesn’t get any easier and the results are out of bounds good. With the recent update to their motherboard the smoker is best in class. Additionally if you have place to keep it out of the elements (under a deck or covered) the rust is a non issue. Even exposed the new cover and makes a big difference. Like I said, to do over I’m still going with the Yoder, it’s build quality is second to none. Good luck.
