Yoder Smokers YS640s Pellet Grill Review by ‪GearDiary.com‬

Ғылым және технология

Perry from ‪GearDiary.com‬ reviews the YS640s from Yoder Smokers.
The S-Series grills from Yoder represent a nice improvement over Yoder's previous generation of pellet grills. As ever, the YS640s is built like an absolute unit.
Yoder Smokers are made in the USA in Yoder, Kansas.

    it appears that your front caster wheels are much smaller than the wheels on the same model on the Yoder website... can you please explain this as well as your temperature swings. Being able to maintain a constant temperature is very important to producing great smoked products. Thanks..

    Linkster The smaller wheels on the right side are standard for the YS640s. You may be looking at the YS640s Competition Cart, which has four large matching wheels. I don’t see a need for the huge wheels unless you’re planning on moving it around every weekend. The temp swings were fairly minor, and the food it produces is fantastic. I think it’s mostly due to the fact that the temp probe is above the fire pot instead of centrally located. I think the average chamber temperature is more stable than the app reports.

    Great video! Any issues with heat differences between the left and right side of the grill? I like how the firebox is not in the middle of the grill and can be accessed easily even while leaving food on the grill to the right if needed. But when grilling large brisket, lrg turkey, etc. I assume it’s cooler on the right side and if so by how much? Or maybe the thickness of the material retains heat enough to make that irrelevant. I know some wider grills with the firebox in the middle can have lower temps at the sides. Thoughts?

  • @perrybrauner6727

    @perrybrauner6727

    4 жыл бұрын

    CasualClark I didn’t notice extreme temperature differences between the left and right of the grill once the grill came to temp. Like you said, the heavy steel acts as thermal mass to help even out temperatures throughout the chamber. There are some differences between the four quadrants of the grill, but the damper allows you to make some adjustments to balance the temperature. It’s all about learning how the grill behaves and adjusting to it.

    I wish I had seen this before I plunked down on the Camp Chef Woodwind. It’s build quality is poor for a thousand dollar product. The WiFi controller and app is very basic and buggy. Looks like for a few hundred more you can get a much better device. But dude, thank Yoder for making you start a fire right in front of the device. Safety is important.

    @pman555

    Wes Hartman Thanks for watching. I don’t believe you’re supposed to try to go low and slow with the diffuser plate trap door open since the diffuser plate is what helps maintain that low, even temp. What I did was smoke at 225 and then use tongs or heat resistant gloves to the lift up the grates and open the trap door, then I set the grill to high heat. Worked like a charm and was very easy and quick to do.

  • @pman555

    4wolverines Hey, thanks for watching! You can’t fit 4 porterhouse steaks directly over the firepot, but you could fit 4 smaller steaks over the fire, like a NY strip. The grill grates conduct heat really well though, so you could grill steaks throughout the length of the grates. I would estimate pellet consumption around 1.5 lbs/hour at 225F. Definitely seems to be higher than some other grills, but I’m not too bothered by it, just wish the pellet hopper was slightly larger. Let me know if you have any other questions.

    4wolverines I can understand the complaints about paint, as I’ll mention in my full review which is going to be published later today on GearDiary.com. However if you take care of this grill, it will take care of you. In my opinion, the versatility of the grill and smart features like Fireboard far outweigh any paint/rust concerns. The only two downsides I can see to the YS640s is the hopper size and paint concerns.

    They get knocked on their paint quite a bit, but powder coating is more brittle. It would pop completely off from all the metal expansion and contraction. I threw out a grill that was powder coated. I dropped the lid after a year of use and probably half the coating popped off. Oil the surface like you would on an offset (or should) and you will never have rust.

    Eastside Badger Glad you liked the video. Appreciate it! Rust is definitely a concern, so we will see what happens. Yoder says that they make it with high temp spray paint so that it’s easy for the owner to touch up on their own. The controller is one of the best on the market, so I have no doubt it’ll perform in the cold weather. But we will see! It’s definitely pellet hungry.

There's literally no other purpose to put wifi on a grill unless you are able to warm up the grill without having to go outside while you get your food ready while it's warming up.
