YEAR IN REVIEW | The WWF in 2002 (Full Year Documentary)
2002 was a year of great change. In the world of film, we would see the modern age of superhero movies begin with the release of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man, in television we were first introduced to The Wire, and over in the world of wrestling, these changes would present themselves in the form of new names, new brand divisions, and a lethal dose of poison. But how did it all happen? Well, join us today as we take a deep dive into the entire story from start to finish in The WWE in 2002: A Year in Review.

I had just gotten out of the Army and moved back to Long Island, so I took my little brother to see SummerSlam '02, such an amazing card! Also, the crowd booing The Rock out of the building after his match when he tried to work the mic was hilarious. We had 2nd row floor seats for the event, and at the end security comes around and cut the zip ties and you got to keep your chair with the event logo on it... I still have that chair 20 years later!

A lot of things came to an end in 2002 : this was the end of the RAW arena from the late 90s, the end of the Attitude Era WWF championship, the end of the WWF itself (they got the F out and changed it to the WWE). The end of Kurt Angle's hair, and the end of The Rock and Stone Cold as full time wrestlers.

2002 was a stellar year for the WWE. Discrepancies in booking and storytelling not withstanding 2002 is perhaps the most revolutionary year within the history of the company. Think about it….everything that has happened in the last 20 years is a result of that year. It was Stephanie McMahon’s first onscreen role as a manager and now she’s the co-director of the company. It was the year that established two world titles, elimination chamber made its debut, the company became a sports entertainment product by getting the “F” out. The year hulk hogan became a wwe champion for the first time in a decade, hbk made his in-ring return. The brand split, the decommissioning of the hardcore & European belts. It was also the year where there were many world champions. On average every two months within the year there was a new world champion. It’s also the year kevin nash tore his quad and the late scott hall sold the biggest stunner you’ll ever likely to see. Also the star power on offer was stupendous. There has never been a year in the company where so many legends and icons were actively under contract with the wwe. Hulk Hogan, Scott Hall, Mr perfect, Booker T, Ric flair, HHH, the Rock, Steve Austin, Edge, Chris Benoit, Rey mysterio, the Undertaker, Kane, Kevin Nash, Jericho, Kurt Angle, Big show, RVD, Eddie guerrero, Hardys, and not to mention future stars Randy Orton, Batista, John Cena & the beast Brock Lesnar. 2002 was a game changer.

@@master-of-mind5881 it was a big bang of building new stars
2002 had a lot of great things: the debuts of Randy Orton, John Cena, and Brock Lesnar, the SmackDown Six, HBK's return and the beginning of his legendary second run, the introduction of one of the more beloved WWE designs, and the return of the Big Gold Belt. The Federation giving way to Entertainment, Vince returning to behind the scenes, Austin's legit walk outs, and the Rock's departures for Hollywood had effectively ended the Attitude Era for good. It definitely was a transitional year for the now-WWE, and next year: the Ruthless Aggression Era was in full swing, starting with arguably one of the greatest heel stables in history: Evolution. It's interesting to see that as of this year, Orton has been an active member of the WWE for 20 years, only taking time off because of injuries.

I wouldn't say 2003 was Full Swing Ruthless Aggression era, simply because in 2003 most of the guys that defined the late 90's and very early 2000's were still there. Austin (All be it only for a couple months), Rock (All Be it Very Part Time), Hogan, Nash, HHH, Taker, Angle, Jericho and now with the WCW guys like Goldberg, Booker T, Scott Steiner among others who were still the Main Event and the current guard. With the only real new name that came to prominence out of the people you mentioned during that time of 2002-2003 was Brock Lesnar. For me the true Ruthless Aggression era started in 2004. Cause that was when most of those names you mentioned and some you didn't, started to truly rise as well as new names starting to be featured in the Main Event. Cena won the US Title from Big Show at Mania 20, Evolution beat The Rock & Sock Connection, Eddie and Benoit ascending to the Main Event over established Main Event guys from the Attitude Era in HHH, HBK, and Kurt Angle. Then one year later Cena and Batista would ascend to the Main Event, Edge became Mr MITB, Rey Mysterio had an amazing feud with now Main Eventer Guerrero and his stock was very high, and Randy Orton had a high profile match with Taker planting the seeds for his future ascent. Over the course of those years, those new names would ascend to the Main Event and define the RA era as the new guard. Eddie and Benoit in 04, Cena & Batista in 05, Edge and Mysterio in 06, Randy Orton and Bobby Lashley (to an extent) in 07, Jeff Hardy and CM Punk (To an extent) in 08, etc. While the old guard was slowly being cast to the side and/or phased out. Stone Cold retiring at Mania 19, The Rock's last match before 2011 was at Mania 20, Mick Foley would become less and less prominent, Goldberg, Scott Steiner, Rikishi, A-Train and other names who were prominent in the late 90's and very early 2000's left the company. So because of that I would say Wrestlemania 20 in 2004 was the true start of the Ruthless Aggression era. With 2002 and 3 being that full transitional period.

@@bwareist No way in hell Ruthless Aggression Era started in 2004. The transition started after the first brand extension and the era was in full swing around July 2002 when Vince made his Ruthless Aggression promo.
Angle and BEnoit were the greatest tag team ever when it came down to wrestling ability. Both when teaming up and also facing each other it was always pure gold every single time.

I agree with Stone Cold on his take with Brock Lesnar. Vince was a "hit or miss" back in the day (nostalgia aside). Austin could see his "miss" from a mile away.

The beginning of it becoming absolute trash after becoming soooo historically fire
To be honest, 2002 was the first year that I felt like the company’s creative direction started to have more misses than the constant home runs they were hitting in the late 90s. HHH’s reign of terror, Stone Cold’s diminished role in the main event, The Rock leaving for Hollywood, Failure of the NWO return, it was just a time where they were trying figure out what the next era was going to look like and they floundered around a lot. That being said, SO MUCH happened this year with the introduction of new stars, brand split and returning main event talent that it evened out. A weird but productive year for the company. While it’s sad to me that it felt like the creative boom period was over, the company rebounded a lot in hindsight and created a lot of new stars that still main event shows today
2002 was a year of change for the WWE. We saw The Rock left for Hollywood, we saw Stone Cold Steve Austin left due to booking issues with Brock Lesnar, we saw the first ever WWF Draft lottery/brand extension, we saw the WWF logo change its name to the WWE on May 6, 2002 after the lawsuit between the World Wrestling Federation and the World Wildlife Fund for the initials, we saw OVW wrestlers joined the WWE including the likes of Brock Lesnar (3/18/02), Randy Orton (4/25/02), Batista (5/9/02), and John Cena (6/27/02). We saw a WCW legend, Rey Mysterio made his debut in WWE (7/25/02), and the return of the big red machine Kane on joining the Raw brand during the early Ruthless Aggression Era (8/26/02). We saw the first ever Chamber match at Survivor Series event in 2002, Edge shaves Kurt Angle hair at Judgment Day pay per view on May 2002, which its the very first pay per view under the WWE branding of that year. Brock Lesnar became a beast and became a very popular wrestler who won both King of the Ring and the Undisputed WWE Championship on the same year. We saw the return of the World Heavyweight Championship belt on Raw, which Eric Bischoff awarded to Triple H. And also the 4th Smackdown videogame, WWE Smackdown! Shut Your Mouth was released on the PlayStation 2 on October 31, 2002 from 20 years ago. What a moment for the WWE.
Another notable change in a awesome year for WWE the big gold wss retired for the undisputed belt which later became the WWE Championship

2002 starts off still in the Attitude era then transitions into Ruthless Aggression era by the Summer.. You could say Rock losing the belt to Brock at Summer Slam was the final nail in the coffin for the best era ever... September 2002 would be the first month neither Stone Cold or The Rock were active wrestlers in WWF/E since before 1996. All the camera men crew, staff members and wrestlers without any merchandise like Crash Holly still wore WWF Attitude shirts. The WWF Rewind and Smack of the night would frequently mention the word Attitude throughout 2001 into 2002. Invasion was a storyline within the era. If the Attitude era was all about a war between WCW and WWF the Invasion angle insisted that war still was going on between the two companies until Survivor Series 2001. Going into Wrestlemania 18 you had Stone Cold and The Rock feuding with the nWo. It doesn't get anymore Attitude era than that. It all changed with the first ever brand split and draft. The get the "F" out campaign changing WWF to WWE. Austin walks out, nWo breaks up for the final time, Rock loses to Brock leaves for Hollywood and is never full time wrestler again. Great video! One thing I wish we went little deeper on was Smackdown's cruiserweight division and how the Smackdown 6 (Edge/Mysterio as faces, Los Guerreros as heels, Angle/Benoit as tweeners) was bringing in higher ratings as a so-called "B-Show" with pure wrestling while Raw was drowning viewers with long(ish) promos and gimmicky matches
WWE 2002 reminds me of Power Rangers season 2. Started off with a bang, Jason brilliant leadership & introduction to new badass villain Lord Zedd. 2002 started off with Triple H return, Rock & Austin still face of company up against the NWO & Undertaker great heel run. THEN it goes downhill Jason, Zack & Trini left They shoved new white ranger Tommy down my throat In wwe Rock & Austin left They are shoving these new ovw guys down my throat especially Brock Lesnar And it all goes downhill at the end of season 2 & 2002. End of 2002 no Rock, no Austin, show ain’t the same no more

I was going to comment "1st" and watch people get mad, but then I saw someone else comment "1st" and it was I that got mad
As many others said, 2002 was certainly a transitional year. Rock & Austin leaving did permanently hurt the ratings in America which meant Raw relied more and more on a heel Triple H which hurt ratings further. Raw was mostly a mess during the early months of the brand split while smackdown had a much better focus and a reliable core of smackdown six. We got the OVW class of 2002 debuts of Brock Lesnar, Cena, Orton, Batista and Team Angle. Victoria debuting to feud with Trish Stratus at Survivor Series 2002. This is also the year where angles were starting to be more misses than hits which got worse over the years.
I’m hype for 2003
As a kid watching the footage when Shawn found out HHH attacked him, I was PISSED lol. That is the perfect feud and the way they made us root for HBK damn I miss that feeling

2002 was a game changer…

Smackdown in 2002 was one of the best Wrestling WWE had ever done. Some Matches where PPV Level.
Thanks for the new video, Andy. I never get bored of your content 🔥🤩
You can argue this may not be the best year ever, which is hard... But THIS was the most evolved year ever. HHH returning, the use of the Undisputed title, Lesnar rising with the RA announcement, and the birth of WWE, while the Rock and Stone Cold became part-time, and the NWO dying for DECADES was a treat. That accelerated pace needs to return, even if a merge in style between the Attitude and RA eras could be synthesized.
This was my entire childhood in 2002 a great time to be around to witness these great times in WWF/e the whole year was a monster testament to all the talents involved

Two of the biggest contributing factors that started the decline happened in this year: the change from WWF to WWE and the brand split.
@jp3813

If anything, those are the two smallest factors. The brand split actually allowed more wrestlers to get significant screen time. Bad writing & booking are the real reasons for the decline. Two words: Katie Vick.

2002 was the year of missed opportunities. Its criminal how guys like DDP, Kanyon, Jericho (although he did rise up) , Tazz, OHaire, Awesome, Storm, and others were used as Mid Card Fodder.
Im excited because 2002 is the year I started watching WWE. I think it was just before the Judgement Day ppv. I've been watching this series mostly to catch up on all the Attitude Era stuff I missed but now it's like a nostalgia trip :)
I've remembered Jeff Hardy/Undertaker Ladder Match WWE Undisputed Championship when I was recording RAW Canada 🇨🇦 Day July 1, 2002 while my Mom was playing Solitaire on the PC when we didn't had the Internet.
20TH ANNIVERSARY!
Probably the most stacked year roster wise ever

I would never forget Stephanie McMahon's angry reaction when HHH ruined their wedding for lying.

Everyone loves to say Triple H was handed that title without earning it. But most don't remember that the week prior he had beaten the Undertaker in MSG to become the #1 contender for the undisputed title, moments before Lesnar left with Stephanie for Smackdown. That makes him the de facto champion, much like Randy Orton in 2007 when champion Cena was injured and couldn't defend against him.

It wasn't just about Ruthless Aggression, it was "Here comes the pain" after seeing that pose by Brock Lesnar, long before he was the beast incarnate, he was the next big thing.
we also saw the introduction of the World Heavyweight Title and Triple h was given it and began his reign of terror which went into 2003

this was the year I started watching, I was 4 years old and a family friend stayed over at the house, I went down to get water and saw him watching wrestling and brock lesnar was on and I was so fascinated by what was happening, I ended up staying up with the dude and watched the whole thing but I couldnt tell my dad cuz it was too violent for me LMAO, so for about 3 years I would watch WWE while my dad was at work til he finally came home early one day and I was watching it and my dad was so angry but eventually started supporting it and took me to see a live showing of WM23 at a local cinema here in the Philippines, good times
2002 is one of my favorite years in WWE history. Period. The time when the brand split was born, SmackDown was getting popular, Rock vs Hogan at Mania, Eric Bischoff debuts, Brock Lesnar's rookie year, Angle and Benoit putting on banger matches, Taker vs Jeff in a Ladder Match, HHH vs Y2J at Judgment Day, the first ever Elimination Chamber Match, HBK returns, debuts, etc. The Only bad things about the WWE in 2002 are Austin leaving, nWo's failed run and Mr. Perfect's failed return. I still love the RA era during the time period. I don't care what anyone says.

@@brianburnswildcat The keyword is "sharply". Raw in 2002 was notoriously bad, and was greatly overshadowed by the Smackdown Six. Here is a forum in 2004 debating whether 02 or 03 was worse: Papacita I've been meaning to start this topic for a while, but when reading through the answers to the survey in the WWE folder, one thing that surprised me was that a lot of posters listed 2003 as the worst year ever for WWE. Granted, 2003 had its problems, but I honestly can't understand how people can list it as being worse than 2002. I mean...the shampoo matches, people feuding over t-shirts, dogs and all that crap. I dunno...maybe you all saw it differently, but I can't remember seeing a wrestling product as bad as WWE 2002. And for all its problems, overall, I wouldn't even say 2003 WWE was all that bad. So what do you think? Guest Ray Conversely, I can't understand how anyone would rate 2003 over 2002. I mean, Raw sucked in both years, but Smackdown was great during the last half of 2002, with Benoit, Edge, Angle, Misterio, Eddie, and Chavo all working their asses off. The quality of wrestling plummetted when heyman was demoted in early 2003 and Benoit spent most of the year as a JTTS. Angle also lost a lot in 2003 due to injury, and after the Rumble he never was able to get back to his 2002 form. 2002 > 2003. Papacita Smackdown had some good stuff going on around that time (and more than its share of bad stuff as well), but it was such a small part of what was a horrible year overall. I say 03 is better because one, there were great matches up and down the year (and they didn't just involve the same six people), storylines on both brands were better (though that's not saying much when you think back to some of the angles in 02), plus there was much more stability in 03. While HHH's long reign wasn't really a good thing, at least you knew throughout the year that he was the focus of Raw. Same with Brock and Kurt on Smackdown. In 02, they went from Flair/McMahon to the nWo to Hogan/Rock vs the nWo to Austin vs Flair and so on. Same thing on Smackdown. Comparing both years, overall, I really can't see how anybody can say that 02 was better. SamoaRowe 2002 nearly turned me off from wrestling for good numerous times (Jericho's title reign being overshadowed, Katie Vick, for example). However, 2003 didn't do this to me at all. I always found a reason for hope and right now I feel as if my sticking around has paid off. JoeDirt The only PPV I liked through all of 2002 was Summerslam. I just thought it was a really, really bad year, with very little that interested me. However, the start of 2003 was pretty bad, too. I'm leaning towards saying 2003 was better, but I really don't know. Guest TheZsaszHorsemen 2002 was better. Once they got settled into the GMs they had four solid PPVs in five months (Vengeance, SS, No Mercy, SurSer). Guest Man Of 1,004 Modes 2002 was worse I think. Not because of the nWo being brought in, but how poorly WWE was booking for most of the year. Wrestlemania was filled with matches fit to main event Sunday Night Heat, a feud over a shampoo commercial, and HHH/Stephanie. The Brand Split left RAW with a TERRIBLE roster, and having bradshaw as the #2 wrestler (face) was awful. The Main Event for about 4 weeks straight was Austin (or Austin/Partner) vs. nWo Member (or all of them). Backlash was booked horribly, with all heels going over for no reason, and massive run ins for the World Title match. Hogan/Taker feud was booked WORSE, with the motorcycle stalling and draggings. Hogan to me though, was one BRIGHT SPOT for T.V., as it was just nice to see him on TV and putting over the younger guys (Angle, Brock, HHH etc all went over Hogan clean on TV/PPV). September is when Smackdown made a turn for the better, with the Smackdown Six having matches with each other for several months, while RAW was HHH vs. the flavor of the month. 2003 wasn't TOO bad, but it shouldn't get any recognition as being good either. AnonymousBroccoli I think the selling point for 2002 going over 2003 was that I only missed one PPV in '02, whereas in '03, I couldn't be bothered to order half of them. There was also usually one or two very good undercard feuds going on throughout '02 (the main event was seldom worthwhile either year, and only on SD!) with Edge vs. Angle, RVD vs. Eddie, Edge vs. Eddie, Angle vs. Benoit, RVD vs. Lesnar (I liked it), Jericho vs. Booker (usually a tag team thing), the whole SD! 6 tag scene, and so on. What did 2003 in was the series of long, awful storylines getting top billing. HHH vs. Steiner, HHH vs. Nash, the whole Vince/Hogan/Steph/Gowen/Piper saga, Goldberg. Katie Vick was shit, but it only lasted 3 or 4 weeks. In '03, they probably had more good main event matches overall, thanks to the SD! side. And WM19 kicks the hell out of WM18. TV matches are probably pretty close. The two years aren't miles apart, and there are plenty of highs and lows to both, but I'm reasonably secure in putting 2002 over 2003. Kahran Ramsus 2002 was one of the worst years in WWE history. 2003 was at least watchable. .....
I’m half way through 2002 on the WWE Network. It’s just not the same. The Attitude Era was the golden era. By 2002 I think the fans were losing interest judging by the crowd reactions. After Cena debuted it was all downhill.

After this is when it went all downhill for me. I feel like wwf becoming wwe was the symbolic start of the end.
i believed that 2002 was, is and always will be the most dramatic year in wwe as far as changes go 1. wwf to wwe 2. full roster twice a week to brand split 3. attitude to ruthless agression 4. ending of stone cold and rock to start of john cena and randy orton 5. multiple singles mid card titles and one world and tag title to no mid card titles and two world and tag titles so really what i'm saying is if you look at any other year from jan-dec you don't see alot of changes. better yet compare royal rumble to whatever ppv december host at any year you're not gonna see alot of changes but if you look at royal rumble and armageddon of this year in particular (2002) it's like if many years went by all in one
