Nice DC04. Shame about the cleaner head, but that's expected at that age. Especially a British one that goes so brittle. I'm sure you'll sort that out.

I love these Dyson DC04s Sam. They seem so dependable and like all Dysons they need their filters cleaned when dirty. I totally agree with the plastic becoming brittle though. I hope your customer wants to save it.

Our DC04 is still going strong, we use it for upstairs or as a spare should the DC33 need some work doing. DC33 isn't bad either.

That's the original flex, during 1999-2001 many dc01s and dc04s had that plug which was common place with da001s and mk1 dc01s/dc02s

That's interesting info. Most DC04's I've seen have the normal grey square plug. Da001's have that yellow plug.

Maybe they found a pallet of them lying around and just chucked them in until they ran out? 😂

@@jayambermsp8000 My De Stijl DC04 from September 2000 has the plug featured in the video, very common as I say for a brief period on DC04s and DC01s. DA001s mainly had this plug too but with the old Dyson logo on it. The famous circle plug wasn't a thing until around 1996 when they introduced mk2 DC01s and DC02s.

Not the original flex - that particular plug came into mainstream use in 1993 (most notably on Electrolux cleaners) and was used on early Dyson cleaners until around 1996, but those were branded with the old Dyson logo/ font, rather than being plain like yours. The first Dyson cleaners I recall seeing with the much more popular round Dyson plug (and featured the new/current Dyson logo/font) were on the Antarctica Solo models, followed soon by the regular DC01 and DC02 cleaners. That plug originally had a fragile plastic earth pin, which was soon dropped in favour of a metal pin - interestingly, around the same time Electrolux were also using the same plug on their Powersystem and Mondo range, albeit in black as opposed to colour-matched like Dyson. Around the year 2000 Dyson changed their plugs again, this time to the square Volex plug which has been around since the early 1990s and was widely used by many manufacturers on all sorts of appliances. These plugs were originally yellow or lime to match the cleaner in question, although the grey colour became the colour that Dyson moved forward with across many of their ranges. Again they had teh new logo/font. This Volex plug is not overly dissimilar to the one in your video, but side-by-side you will see they are not the same. Interestingly, although the Volex plug was used from around 2000, very early DC07 cleaners still had the round plug. Furthermore, there is another style of Dyson-branded plug which was used on some DC03 and DC08 cleaners, in some cases with the DC08 the cord & plug was generic black. However, going back to the plug in your video, these were widely available as part of a generic replacement cord set for any type of cleaner it could be fitted to. This appears to be what you have here.

I'm afraid you're wrong, Dyson did use these plugs a lot in the early 2000s, I've seen a couple of new in box DC01s and DC04s from that time with this plug fresh out the box. (Vacuums4821 had a new in box DC01 from around 2000 with this plug). For some reason they didn't put a Dyson logo on it, but they did go through a short phase of using it on DC01s and DC04s. The rest of your Dyson plug history is correct but they did use these plugs for a brief period during the early 2000s on the DC01s and DC04s. My De Stijl DC04 from September 2000 also has this plug. And a DC04 Absolute featured on BBC programme My Family also had this plug.

@@RJA_World Well I live and learn, because this is news to me, despite having sold these cleaners in a showroom from 1997 to 2002. It is interesting, because the time-frames you refer to are the same period in which Dyson were using the elasticated "doughnut" on the flex, which is absent here (Dyson stopped putting them on mid 2000). The DC01 you refer to in respect of Vacuums4821 is a curiosity - I look forward to seeing a link to that.

They may still be working (and I will die on the hill to defend the performance of a newly-serviced a Dyson DC07 against any upright on sale today), but as we know the plastic used was so very thin and hard that many cleaners that are otherwise working are unusable due to bits snapping off left, right & centre. And plastic being what it is, it very much does not improve with age. My mum had a DC04 D/S which I bought for her in January 2002. It was "old stock" from a showroom I worked in, so had probably been built at least two years earlier and stored in our warehouse as this was not a popular seller for us. Anyway, said cleaner conked out dead in mid 2014, having required a new flex and wand during the warranty period (both parts supplied were later-type styles, the flex being grey with a grey Volex plug as opposed to purple with yellow round plug, and the wand being made of a softer, duller but more durable plastic, as opposed to the rock-hard wafer-thin shiny plastic of the original). Much later I also replaced the carry handle section as this snapped off - the replacement was grey too. Anyway, I'm sure it would have been an easy repair (even though 12 years service was rather good for any cleaner, I thought) but the fact was the cleaner was literally falling to bits as every time I touched a part of it, another piece snapped off. It made the shiny red Hoover Turbopower Autoflex look practically indestructible.
