Yamaha Tracer Gt Long Term Review How is it after 15000 kms?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I bought my Yamaha Tracer GT almost a year ago now and thought I would go through with you all the pluses and negatives that I have discovered over the last year and 15000 kms. The only modification I've done so far is the tires, which I switched to Michelin Road Pilot 5's, and the front windscreed which just had to go.

I have had my Tracer GT now for 3 months and have put on 7000 kms touring the around the Canadian Maritimes. It a brilliant motorcycle. I have owned over 20 bikes in last 40 years and the Tracer has risen to the top of my favourites list. I have been riding adventure bikes, BMW GS and Yamaha Super Tenere this last decade. After all these years of riding 2 wheel hum res, I have once again discovered the fun in motorcycling.

Thanks for that. I'm a long term owner of an '02 TDM900 I bought new (160,000km and counting) and have long thought the Tracer most likely as replacement for the TDM. Glad to hear your endorsement and at least I know the pitfalls now before I buy, so they'll be less a nasty surprise!

Thanks for the review, I thoroughly enjoy your editing and content. I agree with most of the negative points on this bike ( I own the same model but in grey/red ) but the key issue doesn’t bother me after a year of ownership, I just approach the bike differently to insert the key. I wanted to be able to store my helmet on board so fitted a Givi rack with a 52 litre box which fits 2 full face helmets and does compromise aesthetics but I find the practicality factor outweighs this, it is a tourer after all !. I haven’t even touched on your mileage yet (4000 km) as I have 2 very young children and am needed at home, so the Dunlop tyres don’t need replacing yet but those Michelin road 5’s look good, although this summer in the Spanish mountains in hot weather the Dunlop’s didn’t do too badly. My only other negative point would be that coming from a CBR 900rr I find the top end on the Tracer leaves me wanting but I could only ride the Honda for 2 hours before needing to get off and have a stretch (I’m 6ft). To sum up I used to be a despatch rider in the uk and have done many many miles on lots of different bikes and would have loved a Tracer for the job, perfect for town and country!.

Just an option if you hate fidgeting for your keys would be digital Guard Dog. It’s basically a keyless start ignition. I got one for my xt250 because getting on and off a bike while doing door dash makes it easier. I’m really considering the tracer 900 as my second bike.

Excellent and totally sensible review (not like some others I've seen!) Agree wholeheartedly about the key but at 6ft1in I dont really have a problem with the screen, it set at its lowest so I too prefer the wind but its not turbulent (unless behind a truck!), also get the same issued with the centre stand grounding on some corners with my missus on the back but try to ramp up the rear suspension, but as Im 17.5 stone I don't think that helps ! As far as the chain is concerned, I would recommend an automatic chain oiler. Have had Scotoilers for years on other bikes but this time I have a Tutoro which is a lot cheaper and less hassle to fit (no need for a vacuum line) and it helps with the chain longevity and noise. I also have a hugger extender to try and keep the spray off my missus but waiting for the delivery of a separate Givi Splash Guard so will see if that helps as well. Finally I have a Give Rack and Kappa Top box as well as the Givi Tanklok Bag so plenty of luggage space for our trips to the West Coast of Scotland. Again thanks for the sensible report !

Thank you for an excellent, thorough review. I've considered this bike as a long-distance tourer. Unfortunately the center stand design is a deal breaker for me--I once crashed (fortunately at low speed) going around a turn when the center stand lifted the rear wheel. I'm in western Pennsylvania, where twisty roads are everywhere and twistier roads not far away. I can't risk getting caught on the center stand. Otherwise it looks like a solid choice.

Great review, I've done the same mileage and concur with your findings, haven't done two up yet as I was single when I bought it, I've got the lowering bones to be fitted for next year as I'm a shortarse at 5'5" and that bothers me for 2 up, also my lady is a little heavier than me so I'd like my feet planted, slightly concerned with the centre stand scraping but I'll take it off if that's an issue. I added the fog light kit, really nice roadway illumination in the dark. Head on visibility is also much improved for oncoming traffic. I upgraded to the Yamaha touring screen & it's perfect for me at 5'6". I also did handlebar riser/setback, lower seat, lowering links, adventure pegs, top box. My #1 complaint: seat is way too tall & ground clearance to short. I've hit my center stand plenty of times!

Nice video, I have the same bike with nearly 10k miles in the UK, agree with most things you mention, but my bike has footpeg vibrations at motorway speeds which is really annoying, so you have to slow down or go way over the speed limits to get away from the vibrations, and the brakes are adequate but no more, if you start pushing this bike hard the brakes are pretty poor and combined with budget suspension the ride is pretty lively to say the least. But for most people this is a great bike and the new 2021 model will be out soon with lots of updates 😁😁.

  • @sixthisoverdrive

Duncan Blanchard that footpeg problem can be solved with some rubber foot pegs. I feel that while the suspension and brakes are not up to sport bike standards, they will fit 97% of riders. Keep piling that mileage on.

Yamaha adventure pegs help alot with damping foot vibes. Steel BBs in the handlebar with foam over-grips help the hands. I also find that vibes are noticeably less above 5.5K & below 4.5K, so I choose my gear selection accordingly.

Don't waist your time with the stock suspension. It's absolute junk. Aka fake suspension. Even in the manual it says to replace after about 8,000 miles because it is not serviceable. My shock was blown out after 5,000 miles and could not be set up for my weight of 83 kg. Upgraded to Ohlins with 15 weight oil in the forks. Huge improvement!

Regarding the rear top box from Shad your buddy has and you mentioned. Yamaha has realy nice top box with its own discrete rack that fits instead of the silver pillion hand rails. They look almost as the stock ones just a little extended. The top box itself then clicks onto the rack and you can match the key barrel to your ignition. One key for all. They don't look anything as hideous as Shad. I bought the system with the bike from the dealer. Have a look into it.

Depending on where you live the price hike is substantial, so my personal thought is that you don’t get enough to warrant that price increase. However, the did fix some issues that were annoying on the 20 like foot peg placement and a much better windscreen. The electronics are also updated along with some extra payload. Other than that I can’t see them much different in the power and handling.

The problems I had with my 2019 GT is firstly it didn't come with panniers here in Thailand. They are not available in SE Asia. And the Dealerships have no way to order them. It was $1,800 extra after import tax from partzilla. The key location could be better but no problems. The seat was horrible, then upgraded with Seat Concept dot com. The chain completely worn out after 2,000 km. Yamaha does not honor the warranty at all in Thailand. The brakes barely worked. Had to pay the dealership to bleed them, no change. I bled them with 50% better than upgrade to EBC HH pads and rotors. Huge improvement. The stock suspension was completely useless even with settings maxed it would bottom out. Was all over the road, no stability. Upgraded to Ohlins transformed it from a dangerous pos to a absolute pleasure to ride. Many other add ons like Givi engine guard and and bd lights, radiator guard, k&N, Exhaust mod (see my video), Dynojet PV3 tuner... With over $20k USD in it to complete the bike how it should be from the dealership, I regret to say it was not worth it.

4:14 There really is more to be said about windshields. The fact that they relieve pressure on the neck and shoulders while driving on the highway and prevent the body from cooling down certainly contributes to driving comfort. But windshields undeniably cause turbulence. Driving in clean air is indeed less noisy than in turbulence - but the most silent is being in no air flow at all. So turbulence itself is not the problem, it's turbulence around the helmet. The solution in my opinion is not to get rid of your shield, but to find one that minimizes turbulence around your helmet. That may be a bit of a search and it's good to realise there is no perfect solution. In the end it comes down to what's the best compromise.

No doubt that the Tracer 900 is a friggin' fun bike to ride. I concour that the motor is awesome - It's so snappy and it feels like it's a lot more powerful than it actually is. On that note I just sold my Tracer 900 (standard - non GT) and bought a Kawasaki Versys 1000 (again). I have a few reasons. Mainly as you mention - but firstly - the windscreen is SO BAD. I've tried every windscreen in the world for this bike - they all suck. Puigs Racing Screen is the best alternative but I ride a lot in bad weather and thats just not gonna cut it for me. Secondly the bike is just too darn lively - the rear suspension is too soft regardless of setting and it just feels like it's all over the place. Also it feels very unstable on the freeway at higher speeds. Putting on good tires helped, but it's still a bit uneasy for me. Thirdly Yamaha really went below the bar in general build quality. It's a cheap bike to buy and after 10.000km in all weather situations it definitely shows. The paint on the swing arm is really sensitive to stones and other muck getting thrown around in that area. The before mentioned wind screen flaps about like its mountet on elastic bands. The front and underside of the motor looks terrible after riding in rain and other bad weather (and I don't even ride in gravel). I had a Honda CBF600 which I rode in same conditions for 6 years and 50.000km and the Tracer almost looks worse than that bike did. Other than these gripes - again - I do love the engine. It is SO fun to feel the snappiness of that 120 degree crank motor - cross planey feeling of linear power. Just awesome. I'm just gonna have to confess it was not the bike for me. I've owned Honda CBF 600SA, Kawasaki Versys 1000 2014, BMW R1200GSA 2010, Tracer 900 2019 and now back to a Kawasaki Versys 1000 2015 (reg. 1. 2017). I guess I wish they put that motor on a better chassis and put some more energy and money into build quality - I'd consider buying one again.

@@chrisvantassel8867 I understand, I don't like the looks of choppers :). We all have good taste. We would all buy the same bikes otherwhise. That is no fun.

Chris Van Tassel right? I know. They are even uglier than dual sports. I think the ninja 1000 strikes a good balance of style and comfort, but it’s almost 3000 bucks more for close to the same performance.

@@sixthisoverdrive I ended up buying the MT10 and added bags, windshield and heated grips. Looks like a transformer but it looks like a linebacker. Stronger engine and pretty darn comfortable. I have a Husky 701 for offroad.

funny what bothers some and not,,,,lotsa bitching about the key but never bothers me ,,never have to take gloves off,,its a bit tight yes but just turn the dam bar to the left ,,couldn't be easier ,,i dont care at all for the seat ,,it pitches you forward ,,its ok when just cruising but stars chaffing riding around town or canyon blasting ,,now for me its the annoying gas gauge ,,nothing between full and half,,,,poor location for info wheel ,,cant really easily negotiate while driving ,have to use left hand ,not the end of the world but it just feels so damm cheap ,,the wheel on my mouse is better .I took the beg feelers off right away ,,they kept scraping and scaring me,,have never had issue with C .S. ,,are you having with two people ? or load ?,,you dont look much bigger than me,,,.My biggest beef and almost got rid of my 2020 was the annoying vibration at 48-52 hun rpm,,and it gets worse when very hard on the gas from 6500 to 9500 rpm,,but only on excell,,goes away once desired speed is met.Oh yeah and haunted trany,,sometimes super smooth shifting ,other times its a clunker 1st,2nd and 3rd,,,,Wondering front end with the slightest side winds ,,feels like riding in the draft of an 18 wheeler ,,2000 miles and oil pan appears to be leaking since day one ,,weird clinking noises i dont think i will ever figure out,,,BUT,,it is a blast to ride ,good handling and decent power,,,I am looking forward to new tires ,ecu flash and new front springs ,,it really nose dives on braking

Bill Hamilton just curious if your seat is in the high or low position. Mine is in the low. My cruise control issue is back also. As for the key placement, it’s annoying because I have to do the process so often, and it would be so easy to fix from the factory.
