2021 Yamaha Tracer 9GT Versus the Kawasaki Ninja 1000sx. OPINION 2 updated bikes, only one can win.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I will pick a winner which is a rarity on KZread! Make sure you comment on who you think should have won and why.
I’ve had a lot of experience with the Yamaha Tracer 9 GT and the Kawasaki Ninja 1000sx and while on paper they may seem similar, as they are both sport-tourers, in reality, they are quite different. For this review, we are going to kit them out with the touring options as that’s what I think most people have in mind when buying them. Let’s break it down spec by spec and see if we can come up with a winner. If you want a closer look at the numbers, feel free to pause the video, I’ve sorted them all out for you.

Thx for posting. My Ninja SX is arriving next week. Had a long testride before and drove Z900 with a very similar engine for three years. My buddy owns a Tracer 900 so I think I can also add some comments comparing the two. First of all I agree with everything you stated. In addition: I think the Kawa has the better engine with even more torque and is running smoother. As we do not have speed limits on the German Autobahn (at least big parts of it) I can state that the Kawa has better high speed stability above 200 km/h and is less noisy. The Kawa likes to go fast and is solid as a rock up to max speed (250 km/h). The tracer is less stable but handles better in tight corners. A big plus for the Yamaha is that you can stand up while driving if your butt starts to hurt or you knees need a little movement. With the sporty seating position on the Kawa this is not possible. On the other hand the slightly forward tilt seating position on the Ninja prevents my spine from hurting in contrast to the very upright adventure bike position on the Tracer. Both are excellent bikes and are in my oppinion more reliable than the European brands that also have extremly high service costs at the workshop. My KTM 890 Adventure R regular services cost more than double than my Z900. Greetings from good old Germany and ride save!

You are right on the money. I didn’t bother putting in my z900 experience, but yes, these Kawasaki bikes have the handling dialed in and the power is better everywhere except from a dead stop. Thanks for your comments.

I have both z1000sx 2015 and Tracer 9GT 2022. SX has better engine, feels more connected, after a couple of hours i start to feel my knees, leaning forward position makes me tired, passenger comfort is awful, mirrors are terrible. Tracer feels much lighter and more nimble, upright riding position is great, wind protection, mirrors, passenger comfort - way better. Engine is fun. It doesn't throw you forward after 6k like Kawasaki's, but it is fast and fun feels nice. Z1000sx is 70/30% sportbike/tourer, where Tracer is 20/80%. Tracer 9 wins hands down as a all-rounder.

I agree with your review. I have a 2022 Tracer in the UK. Where I live the roads are mostly small country roads which suit the Tracer well. Its so easy to throw around and change direction compared to a traditional sports tourer. I rode a Suzuki GSX1000GT demo on the same roads and the Suzuki suspension felt cheap and underdamped. Where the Kawasaki and Suzuki win out is on larger higher speed roads Where the more prone position is much better. The original screen on the Tracer is horrible, it creates masses of turbulence at high speed and being bolt upright it's difficult to find a screen which helps this situation. In town and country roads its fine, but faster open roads are a nightmare for me. I also agree with the slightly disconnected feel from the front of the Tracer compared to a Z1000SX. I'm really happy with the Tracer and I've realised that there's not a perfect bike. The Tracer comes close in most areas and the potholes round here are so bad I'm thankful of the Tracers suspension. I suppose it depends what type of riding you do the most. For me the Tracer suits really well, but if I did more touring I'd buy the Z1000SX. Cheers for the review 👍

A top box set-up is just too ugly for words, plus people tend to fill way too much weight in them (should not hold much more than a helmet) making the bike unstable at higher speeds. A top box is after all placed behind the rear wheel. As my wife does not enjoy riding (yeah!) I opted for a tailpack, the Oxford T40R which zips right on and off my Ninja 1000SX. I have a picture of the full set-up at the very beginning of my video "Alcaniz - Route N-211"

Nick The Quick thanks for the tips. I once had a top box on a tiger 800 XX and it changed the handling a lot, which makes sense as manufacturers typically try to get the weight low and centralized. The only reason I had it was to take my wife and kids out for rides. I don’t do that anymore so there is really no use.

As an owner of the 900GT and the Ninja 1000sx, and extensive test rides of the Z1000Sx and the 9GT, I can pretty much agree with your decision, though perhaps with a different weighting on factors. The Z1000SX was my practical poster bike, I just adore the styling, but just couldn't take to the handling. The 900GT was cheaper and a triple (was coming from Triumph Street 765) and CC et al, I chose it over the SX. Within a month I just wanted rid of the Yamaha. Awful fit and finish, every component looks like some cheap chinese knock off. A plethora of different screens still resulted in head pounding buffeting. Worst fueling I have ever known on any bike. Terrible interface and jog wheel. As soon as the Ninja 1000SX was anounced, I couldnt wait for covid restrictions to lift to see if Kawasaki had addressed most of the minor gripes I had with older model... and boy did they. Apart from the centre stand (now have lift in workshop), it really is close to my ideal bike. Electric smooth fueling, quality components and equally good finish. Possibly the best dash on the market even without all the fancy integrations some now have. I still love her as much 18 months on and though my gaze may be turning towards the new Suzuki GT, I honestly cannot see any bike replacing the Ninja for quite some time. Perhaps a Versys 650 to sit next to her and take some of the Winter commuting battering, but then again perhaps not.

The horsepower and torque are not going to make up the difference between the 2 bikes, and by looking at the riding position on the Tracer, it’s quite obvious that this bike is not going to handle the same as the ninja. I believe Yamaha will improve slightly but with the upright ergos it’s still going to be more tuned to a more nimble quicker steering machine than the Kawi. The Kawi will feel more settled and precise. Even when a bike makes a change like this they don’t throw away the general character.

I have a XSR900, but looking to get a Ninja 1000sx as a long range sports tourer, but worried about too much knee bend for longer rides... getting old ... 🤭 I also have a 07 R6, and can do 2-3 hours or so on that, but definitely not a full day. I can do a full day on the XSR.

abysal311 actually it’s more bent than either of the Yamahas. Funny thing is that no one complains. I didn’t find it bad at all and I was doing 800 km days. Everyone who rode it thought it would be bad when first getting on, but they all changed their minds after riding it. The reviews say the same. It’s no where near the knee bend of a r6.

Lack of power unless you rev it all the time. Putting kickstand down had the footpeg in the way. Windshield very ineffective with lots buffering right on the helmet TFT screen way too small, digits even smaller. Not wellset up either. Dial knob on throttle side absolutely ridiculous place.and cheap construction. And the supsension is no where up to par as the ninja. Luggage on ninja is much more sturdy and handy too. Yamaha luggage have no room and closure is cheap too. Not the things you want on a bike fo this price and Yamaha finish is not what it used to be . the ninja looks way better than the tracer. I have been researching both of these bikes, and you have missed some HUGE POINTS: 1)Not only does the 2021 Ninja 1000 not come with a center stand, you cannot purchase one ANYWHERE, not from Kawasaki or the aftermarket, perhaps due to the routing of the exhaust. Go check it out if you do not believe me. 2)Not being able to mount a top box at the same time with the panniers on the 1000SX is a BIG DEAL. The reason you cannot do this is because the subframe in the rear is not strong enough to support both, which means a re-design may be necessary. 3)The 1000SX panniers do not come with the bike and cost as much as $1700 !!! The look cheap, too, and have a heat shield on the bottom because the sit so close to the exhaust, so beware of any substitutes you might try with aftermarket carriers. 4)The only top box mount currently available to mount a top box on a 1000SX is the Ventura top box carrier and many complain about its flimsiness. There might be another carrier which can be used, but it replaces the 2nd rider seat. How can you call the 1000SX a sport tourer with such deficits ? Kawasaki has done a poor job of turning a super sport styled bike into a 'Sport Tourer". Who want's a bike you cannot get a center stand for when you need to lube a chain ? Insanely priced panniers that look cheap and do not look that roomy. Not sure if even a helmet will fit in them. In general there is a huge advantage for the Tracer, but they might want to much $$ for the 2021 model. Do your homework and see if these things are not true. Are you making this stuff up ?

  • @sixthisoverdrive

Wow...that’s one long message let me respond. You cannot get a center stand, you also need to take apart the fairing just to change the oil...not ideal. 2. The top box is not a deal breaker for me and many others, but it may be for you. This bike is on the sport end of the spectrum, and I like it that way. 3 I like the panniers, the Do fit a helmet and I priced them in the video with the bike. 4 not worried about a top box, if this is an area of concern, buy the Tracer, it’s a great bike. 5. Lubing a chain is only marginally more difficult without a center stand. 6. I did plenty of research and would buy the ninja hands down over the Tracer and I have owned both, so, it seems that our opinions differ. Thanks for the comments.
