Bought my 1st Yamaha on 2nd Oct 1982. XJ900. Was most likely the best 1/4 fearing/screen Yamaha ever made. No buffeting at all. I did 200km/h+ on it many many times. Never an issue. There was vibration but understandably so at that speed.

Thanks for the video. 😀 I love my Tracer 9GT, and I like almost everything about it, understanding no bike is perfect. Windscreens- I have never met one I like, and have fabricated one for the T9GT that is as low possible and still cover the instruments. Unless there are heavy crosswinds, it is pretty silent. Yes, I get more air, but it is clean air. I am probably colder in winter than someone with a tall windscreen, but heated jacket and gloves I am fine and will take that trade-off.

You guys did it again! Great video!!! congrats! What I have added to mine is the yamaha touring screen (good enough for me...), the radiator guard that I think it´s a must when driving on the country roads, and also have done the seat with gel inserts that makes a bit more confortable the driving but also elevates the seating position in 3 cms and thats why I have to get the higher screen... Keep the good job and thanks for the reviews!

Another excellent and informative video 👍 As an overview, I’ve had my Tracer 9 GT since September 21; where it replaced my previous generation 2018 900 GT. I use mine exclusively for daily commuting around the M25 and through central London, and for long distance touring; typically down to my parents place in Andalusia. I have other bikes for both track riding and the summer street. With regards MODs: I didn’t do much to my 2018 other than a heated comfort seat, MRA Screen Spoiler, Pyramid hand-guard extenders, a 3d Printed SatNav mount (which I think you may have covered in a previous video), a Yamaha Tank Bag and a USB Socket. As the new GT is such a design departure from the last generation the only bits I could move across were the MRA Screen Spoiler and 3d Printed SatNav mount. The rest I sold on the secondhand market. The changes I have found most useful are: 1. The heated comfort seat - I do love a bit of warmth and find the Yamaha comfort seat perfect for my backside. I managed my pre-covid annual 26-hour 1500 mile rides to Andalusia no problem and have no reason to think the same set up on the newer GT will be any less comfortable. I love how it integrates onto the dash too. The previous version had a separate switch that changed colour based on temperature setting. These colours were practically impossible to see in daylight. 2. An MRA Spoiler on a stock screen. I’m 182 cm (6’) and whilst this isn’t perfect it’s certainly good enough for me. Any screen that offers protection will come at the price of having that annoying area of low-pressure behind it. My naked bikes clearly don’t suffer this issue, but I’m willing to compromise for a little protection from the elements. At typical road speeds I find my set up fine. 3. I fitted the Yamaha USB socket on my GT. It’s ‘fine’ but the mounting bracket is rather flimsy and due to this I tend to need both hands to plug/unplug my cable, whilst holding the bracket steady. 4. An SW-Motech ADV Aluminium Topbox and mount. I’m not a fan of the plastic back boxes (aesthetically) so opted for this. I can easily get my work kit and a change of clothes in here. As you mentioned, the panniers are fine for touring, but not ideal on a busy commute, so they rarely get used. That said, I love the lock system and the shape is about as good as they can be, short of a more useful/functional aluminium rectangular design. 5. A large Yamaha tank bag. I do like the new design and the magnetic bit is great, but I was a bit frustrated that my previous bags and lock-ring (which were perfectly serviceable) weren’t compatible. 6. I have fitted Pyramid hand-guard extenders this winter. I didn’t think I’d actually need them, as the T9 GT has larger stock guards than the 2018, but due to my ‘girl sized hands’ (size 7) I find the fingers of thick winter gloves so long, they’re almost dangerous, so tend to wear thinner types. This means the added wind protection is a must to maximise the effectiveness of those heated grips. I just need to try a few on and find the perfect set. One note on Pyramids hand-guard extenders. The website clearly states that no modification to the bike is required, but this is false. The kit provides plastic clips, for which the instructions state a 4mm hole has to be drilled into your OEM guards. Now, I didn’t mind doing this, but it’s one to bear in mind, as the Pyramid extenders really do need this to be undertaken, or they’ll just flap about. On a general note: like you, I have a puncture repair kit and two disc locks under the rear seat, as there’s some really good useable space here. I don’t have fender extenders and I’m not sure they’d do much for me. My bike is absolutely disgusting now after winter; having been liberally ACF’d (with regular top-ups) it will get its spring wash in a few weeks. I find my bikes come up beautifully when I do this, but they do look rough over winter. My top tip here is that my bike store is temperature and humidity controlled and remains below 50% humidity at all times. Any moisture from the day is removed quickly and I’ve never suffered rust on any components. It’s worth looking into, should it be feasible with both storage location and energy budget. The dehumidifier itself is circa £120 and I get around 18-months from them before they pack up (they have a hard life!). I think that’s about it for now. Thanks again for your videos on this bike and all the others, Ed 👍

Great comments Ed, given me some more to think about. I am also looking at fitting the Yamaha USB socket (to that flimsy mount!). I think there is an aux cable to connect it to behind the left front fairing (left when viewing bike from rear). Having looked at the fairing, I cant quite see how it comes off - any tips?

  • @Yama_Apri_521

    @Yama_Apri_521

@@roybailey4529 Hi Roy, I can’t put pictures on here, but essentially you (looking from the front - and this is from memory I’m afraid!): 1. Remove the hex bolt above the RH LED headlight. 2. Remove the press clips on the rear side of the fairing; adjacent to the front of the radiator. 3. Under the bars you’ll see the side Yamaha badge. Follow this down to the top of the side fairing and gently, but firmly pull. This is a rubber interference fit and will pop out. 4. Lift the fairing up and pull to disengage the bottom clip (it’s worth having a look at the rear of the bottom part of the fairing to familiarise yourself with the fixing here, as it would be easy to break if you didn’t guide it out of the retaining slot. 5. Install the USB charger into the flimsy shroud (this is a pain to do and is just a matter or perseverance I’m afraid!). 6. Locate the grey male two-pin accessory plug. I seem to remember this has a female blanking cap fitted. As you’re looking at the loom coming up past the corner of the radiator, it splits off and the plug is here (probably taped up). Remove the tape and blanking cap and plug your white USB plug into it. 7. Tidy up the cable so as not to snag anywhere and you’re done. This is as accurate as I can make it from memory, so I’m hoping it’ll help. Any problems do give me a shout 👍

One of the first things I did to my '21 Tracer 9GT is to install a four terminal fuse block under the passenger seat that is fed by a diode protected relay switched by the lower accessory port. #30 12V input on the relay is fed from a 20A fused lead from the (+) battery terminal. This allows for easy application of 12V accessories such as heated gear, loud horn, heated seat, etc.

I keep meaning to add a headlight switch. I hate that modern motorcycles mandate headlight is on whenever key is on. When/If the battery eventually is near the end just having the lights off might make the difference beween starting and failing to start. Or there could be situations like in a campground where you dont want to disturb anyone with uneeded running lights ....just would like to have the same option I have with my 4 wheel vehicles to turn the dam lights OFF if I want to

Just today I got crash bars from Hepco & Becker, they look minimalistic and offer the opportunity to use small crashbar bags, giving you extra space for equipment on long journeys, which is nice. I also have issues with the OEM windscreen (I'm 173cm or 5'8), the turbulence is really really bad on highways even with earplugs... So apart from the crashbars I also got Puig touring windscreen. I'm really excited to try that out since many riders had good reviews on it. I can always ride without a windshield if it doesn't work I guess. Thanks for the update on T9, your reviews actually tipped me over the edge to go and actually buy it. Loving the bike so far except for the windscreen and perhaps the cheap license plate holder (just cosmetics, so...). I actually like the displays unlike many people. Cheers

Key point on that SW Motech tank ring for people coming from a different bike to the Tracer 9 GT. I've upgraded from a 2017 Fz09 to the Tracer and I can't use the existing tank ring from the Fz09, even though it fits the filler ring. The Tracer requires the double ring because the additional height is needed to clear the plastic guard on the front of the tank.

I've owned my Tracer 9 GT since June of 2021 and have put a little under 8,000 miles on it. For me, the stock seat was uncomfortable. I tried an airhawk cushion similar to the one you showed but it didn't work for me. I live in the US and wound up sending the stock and passenger seat to Russell Cycle Works in California. It was around $700 but worth it since they significantly improved the comfort of the original seat. I also replaced the stock windshield with Yamaha's touring version but needed to add a clip on by Puig. Given the seating position and the aerodynamics of the bike there is still wind noise although fortunately no buffeting. With the changes I made I'm very happy with the bike. I appreciate your reviews concerning this motorcycle.

Interesting... why do you think Yamaha made their keys so soft? They clearly know what kind of alloy they're using so it must be intentional... but why? Could it be that lock internals are soft as well and they didn't want a key that is tougher because it could wear out the lock internally?

You do NOT need to remove the fender or the hugger to fit the Pyramid expansions!!!! I have fitted them to three KTMs and my Tracer 9 GT just adding them to the bike. Easy peasy! Surprised you don't mention a Pyramid Fenda Extenda Extra! If you are really touring it is an ABSOLUT MUST for this bike and light years better than the short extends fenda. it also nicely integrates into the bike and does not look cheesy. Best accessory I've installed yet.

Nice! I appreciate the overview, though I don't own a Tracer - just watching for fun. Why don't manufacturers make fenders that fend off the crap? Has it been determined that the majority of owners prefer the look of the abbreviated fenders? Similarly, why don't they make the instrument faces out of more scratch resistant material (Gorilla glass or something)? Do they put the screens through wind tunnel testing? Is turbulence just unavoidable with this genre of bike due to riding position and distance from the screen?

@MadChalet They do their research and unfortunately a good looking bike sells in the showroom over some practicalities. £20.00 fix though for fender extender, but you still get crap all over the bike, and great point about shock sox retaining moisture. What would you do you do to your instrument panel to scratch it, but gorilla glass is a great idea. Perhaps they can coat my visor with it ! A high screen distant from the rider will always create turbulence, and a lot is also caused by wind hitting legs and deflecting upwards, though it’s rarely mentioned. I found a huge or no screen at all worked best. Despite its faults, it’s a very fun and capable bike to ride.

I’ve had my 2021 Tracer 9 GT for 2 months now, and loving it. Any thoughts on the value of having a radiator guard? If a random stone or bolt etc is kicked up by the front wheel or other vehicle and puts a hole in the radiator, that’s a tow truck, so I’m thinking maybe it’s good insurance. Also, I bought the GIVI touring screen, which is noticeably higher than the OEM screen, but still not perfect. Still wind noise and some buffering. I’m 184cm / just over 6ft.

In 2019 I reviewed the Tracer 900 GT. I found that the screen deflected air over my head without issue. The problem I had was that I got whacked on the shoulders by air coming through the cut outs on the side of the screen. After a lot of research into the options for touring bikes in my price bracket, I plumped for the 2021 9 GT, thinking the screen was a small price to pay, but in anticipation of it being a problem ordered an Ermax touring screen before the bike even arrived. I have never ridden the bike with the Ermax screen attached. I have no problem whatsoever with the standard screen. It's nothing like the previous model. I have fitted the Ermax one over winter to see if it changes anything at all, but it may only be aesthetics as it's tinted. We will see. I have no issue with the seat either. I need a rest before my bottom does. And... I like the dash... not bothered about connectivity. I have a helmet that does all that. BUT Since buying the bike in August, I have had some nightmares. 1. Throttle cutting out... First time Yamaha said they wouldn't do anything unless it happened again.... but after the third time, mid overtake, I played merry hell and eventually had the throttle sensor, throttle bodies and injector bank replaced. I haven't done enough miles since to guarantee it is fixed. 2. When adding a radiator guard, one bolt was SO tight that undoing it split the flange on the side of the radiator, costing me £300 for a new one. Irony. 3. When changing the radiator found missing washers and rubber bungs... whether never there or dealer had removed forvsome reason and not replaced, who knows...

Just demoed a Tracer 9GT yesterday and while the bars were doable, I'd definitely prefer them to be higher. My arms were fairly stretched and straightened out whenever I tried to get more upright. I suppose the idea is to get you in to a very slight (sporty) lean, which when done the bars are perfectly fine. I myself have been spoiled with nice high bars on my 701 Superrmoto and a recently demoed Tuareg 660, both of which allow me to sit completely upright with no lean and still have a nice relaxed reach to the bars. If I end up getting a Tracer, I am absolutely getting risers as I do not like having any kind of lean in my sitting position on my bikes these days. For reference, I am 5'11" or so.

Both front fender extender and rear hugger are absolutely worth it. However, one needs to understand that completely eliminating road crap in the rear is IMPOSSIBLE. Ok? Not possible. Alright, now that you accepted this fact you will be grateful for this thing because it reduces the amount of crap so much that you actually don't care about it anymore and you don't feel that have to wash the bike immediately. Believe me, you want this.

Over the generations of the Tracer, they haven’t resolved the issue of the poor screen and the fact the exhaust headers look rubbish after a short space of time.

I agree with you and the issue with the screen. I have an MRA Vario fitted now (had to import it due to crap Yamaha US support) & its better, a lot less buffeting & slightly less noise. I'm 6'3" BTW. I still hear A LOT of either induction roar or exhaust noise. Can anyone comment on the noise after fitting a conventional exhaust? (ie such as Akrapovic) This would put the noise far behind the rider instead of right underneath.

Has anyone replaced the ugly stock exhaust which quickly becomes discoloured and grimy looking? The Akraprovic replacement exhaust in the Yamaha accessories is quite expensive and it extends as a traditional muffler on the right of the rear wheel, attached to the rear peg mount. There's a video on KZread comparing the sounds of various replacements incl. the stock exhaust and the Akraprovic looks tasteful and sounds meaty without being the hooligan.

Not sure where you're getting your prices from as the Yamaha dealer prices are far more expensive than you quote. That £36.20 for the backrest is over £50 on the website. As for screens, the MRA Touring Vario is by far the best screens for a number of bikes.

@@dougiequick1 Do you expect the Tracer to have wonderful brakes, like say a Ducati Multistrada? Its brakes are totally serviceable and very much "on par" with say the Triumph Tiger 850, BMW F900 etc. Its not a 20k bike tho, so no its not BremB0 Ultramasterdope edition brakes. Even on track its fine, more agressive pads would be good if you were really pushing. But at that point i'd start to wonder why i was on a tracer lol.

Since my front pads were all but totally worn out by 8k miles (they maybe had 500 miles left in em) so since I had to replace them anyway I went with one of the EBC sintered HH options and I have to say they feel more cofidece inspiring, I also picked up a 2023 MT10 for my canyon carving and again the brakes were a little lack luster so I just went ahead and put better pads on that one too ....this time I chose the much praised SBS RST Sintered Brake Pads (634RST) road and track pads and they really DO make a difference! I might buy the SBS RST pads for the Tracer 9 next time I need pads for that one too! Although now that it is not my canyon bike the EBCs will likely last a very long time ...The EBCs are plenty good enough though I would not bother until they too are worn out.
