Yamaha MT-09 SP 2021 vs Triumph Street Triple RS | Visordown.com

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Having already done battle with their respective MT-07 and Trident nakeds, it is the turn of the new 2021 Yamaha MT-09 SP and Triumph Street Triple RS to take up step into the ring.
One of the naked motorcycle segment's most esteemed competitors, the Yamaha MT-09 SP gained a significant overhaul for 2021 with a fresh face and its most powerful engine to date, but is it enough to dislodge that other big triple-cylinder favourite, the Triumph Street Triple RS?

Who wants a naked street bike on track? For track we have supersports, for street we need dynamic, fun and a playful bike and in that sense i think SP is the god of the game. Also the cp3 engine roar makes you feel that bike like a sex machine.

To me the Yamaha felt a bit flighty and unsettled when I quickened the pace, and the finish of the bike didn’t look so good or of a very high quality either. I’ve still got the Triumph and have put 4000 miles on it so far; still completely love it and feel my pulse quickening every time I open the garage door! Good luck with whichever bike you choose 👍

I really like the Triumph Speed Triple RS and Street Triple RS. Unfortunately, Triumph prices are getting to be a bit much for what you get and, at least with the Speed Triple, the service intervals seem to be shorter compared to other bikes. Frankly, I think companies are adding unnecessary tech to bikes, which is increasing the prices for things most riders don’t need. There’s no reason to have multiple modes of companies use one good engine map. Given the long-term cost of ownership, I’d probably take the Yamaha MT09 SP.

Some of the technology is unnecessary in these closer to 100 hp bikes but I do think some of it can -if properly designed- be a lifesaver. Cornering abs? I love the concept if it works well. Slipper and assist clutch? I love it. Up and down auto blipper? If it works seamlessly I’m all for it. Rider modes? meh, maybe for the rain or a beginner who has no business on a powerful bike. Traction control?if it’s well designed and not too intrusive, it can save the day. Wheelie control? Absolutely for a 175 horsepower bike. A 100 horsepower bike? Maybe to keep a bike from going over on its back? It can be a good option.

I've got over 10k miles on it which includes a track day and a 5,300 mile 2 week trip from TX to OR and back. I'd have more miles, but you know, corona. There are many bikes in this category which will not disappoint some more expensive than others some more blinky than others etc. As someone many years ago told me and i think its still the case, a motorcycle you should not buy based on what's on paper only, you have to go ride it, see it in person and feel how it "speaks" to you, to your way of riding and experience etc. Staying informed and reading or viewing reviews is important but if you are looking for a bike you have to go ride a few before you make a decision.. I've a 2020 Street triple and my mate bought an MT-09SP in May and I must confess as a fun machine the MT nails it and leaves the Street triple behind up to 80mph when the Triumph starts to close the gap, the Triumph has it at the extreme top end that most people don't use and a "restricted to 150 mph" is nonsense on a naked bike as your struggling to hold on over 120 mph, the Triumph is still the better handler and has a much more premium finish but for smiles per hour the MT wins, but a tip for Street triple owners is to change your rear cog from 46 to 48 teeth ,the boost in acceleration is brilliant but supposedly drops top speed but as I've said its top speed is really theoretical so you really won't notice it but will the acceleration.

I owned a Suzuki gsxs 1000 for two years put 16000 miles on it, nitron shock in it, remapped etc, yes it was very quick but you had rev it hard and it still had a horrible hole in the midrange, the mt is far more fun at low revs and hence low road speeds, as you are not chasing revs, I did silly speeds on the Suzuki as essentially it's derived from a gsxr1000 sports bike. The Yamaha is much better for the road and actually quicker 0 to 100, where it counts.

It would seem like the KTM 890 Duke R would be the obvious 3-way comparison. Sitting right between the two, providing the best of both worlds, while arguably doing better than both at their own strengths. Gobs of class leading low end torque, peaking 3k RPMs lower than the Triumph, running just a bit higher up the revs than the MT-09, while matching the Triumph's peak HP, 2.5K lower. Arguably equal or better suspension and electronics than both bikes, and a middle ground seating position that's neither overly track committed, or too relaxed. All while only being 5 lbs heavier than the Triumph, and 12+ lbs lighter than the MT-09.

Depends where you are in life. I like the refinement and the non-jittery feel of my 2020 STR. I find I can focus more on other things rather than worrying the bike will be upset setting up for fast cornering. Prior, I had a 2015 ZX10r, and that thing was ballistic. It was jittery and begged to be ridden like a missile. Slower cruises were very painful, especially through traffic. Horses for courses.

The « slightly compromised handling of the previous SP » - I strongly disagree, especially with the S20 swapped for the S22 which truly transform the bike. Also, adapt the suspension setting to your specific weight and you have a very agile and yet stable winner on the twisties 😉🏁🏁

It is a common theme amongst journalists that wouldn't know how to set up a bike. They just ride it straight out of the box and sometimes even say they dont want to change anything so as to give the viewers an impression of how it comes "standard". Such BS for bikes of this calibre. A change of tires, firming up the suspension (not required so much for the SP), lowering the triple clamps on the forks to get steeper rake (the ST is already set with a steeper rake), maybe different handlebars and a steering damper depending on how far you want to go. An inexpensive set of changes and totally transforms the bike. In all these years of the MT09 since 2013, not one journo has bothered.

"The triumph seems like the ultimate choice" ...thats because it is. Ive owned both bikes and those banging on about the yamahas imu/ abs cornering its not enough. The very point of that system is stupid any real rider/ driver knows you dont brake during a corner you do it before. Its a riding aid for the uneducated. The Triumphs handling and build quality are in a different league against the cheaply made yamaha. The one point i would give to Yamaha is that its a far comfier riding position, the street you are over on your wrists.

Fit and finish is great, but reliability is nowhere near japanese levels with Triumph. A German magazine went through two replacement engines on their way to 50,000km on a Street Triple. IIRC, it dropped a valve into the cylinder, seizing and destroying the engine... twice.
