Version 1.66 has just come out as at 2nd June here in Australia . Not sure if it’s the VRR update, but Yamaha has promised VRR in any case with future update - as all consumers have been notified by email about VRR. (Provided consumers have registered their product for the 10 YEAR WARRANTY . Registering also meant Yamaha sent me a quality watch as a gift) .

Still waiting for that VRR update, it's really important and for the quick menus that they talk about for these amps that will have little to no lag when switching inputs.

Hi Max ... Thanks for sharing insights about your Yamaha. Your firmware videos are always helpful. By the way, I am enjoying my A6A more and more. Getting one was well worth the wait. What do you understand about the Surround AI option? I am loving it. My Apple Music streaming sounds fantastic in Surround AI. It really centers the music well, while delivering a huge sound stage. (I have small/medium room with a 5.2.4 configuration).

Okay, so after a lot more troubleshooting, I verified that 8k mode is required to be enabled to get 120hz 4k with hdr, yamaha tech support verified that over the phone. I also discovered that my 4k 120hz hdr only works when the earc hdmi cable is unplugged. When I have my E-arc cable plugged into the TV and the avr then 4k 120hz is disabled on my pc, but as soon as I unplug earc, it's back to working. Basically, any time I want to watch TV through a smart app on the TV, I have to plug that cord in and unplug it whenever I want to use my pc. Major pain in the ass.

Timing I tell you, i was JUST about to drop coins on an A6A and last week sadly decided due to the lack of HDMI 2.1 support I was going to another brand. This changes the situation somewhat but VRR is a concern. Thanks for this post, just the detail I wanted to see.

Does Yamaha rx-v6a support dolby vision for games? I can reach only hdr10 with dolby atmos and VRR 4k 120hz for games when I connect XSX directly to rx-v6a with hdmi 2.1 cable and another hdmi2.1 from yamaha (earc hdmi ) to my LG oled tv hdmi eArc...even when I select ENABLE in XSX settings- GAMING in dolby vision....any one have Idea? Dolby vision in XSX is working only for apps like Dolby content or Netflix but not for gaming.... little bit strange...To achieve the dolby vision with dolby atmos for gaming I have to connect XSX diectly to my hdmi1 2.1 in my LG oled and second hdmi 2.1 was plugged from Rx-v6a earc hdmi 2.1 to lg oked hdmi 2.1 eArc...really dont understand why is not working in normall way ? In specification of Yamaha rx-v6a its say that the reciver is support dolby vision ....buy maybe only for movie ....any suggestions will be helpful. Thx

Hi Max! Love the content. I'm curious, which HDMI input do you use on your Samsung from your A8A, 3 or 4? I have an Rx-A8A and a Samsung QN850A. I run everything through my A8A and then to game port on Samsung (HDMI 4). I really don't need eARC as everything play directly through Samusung via PS5 or Sony UBP-X800M2 for streaming. Besides that for whatever reason Samsung decided to make an 8K tv for and use DD+ instead of TrueHD is beyond me, so eARC would be downgrade in this case. I also read even though they're all 2.1 ports, port 4 is the only one to get 4k/120 on. So really curious on your thoughts and connections. (future video?).

For the Samsung S95B, I use HDMI 3 for eARC. I have the Apple 4KTV and my UB820 connected through the RX-A8A. My PS5 is connected to HDMI 2 on the S95B and the Series X HDMI 1. The reason I have that setup is that the A8A doesn't support VRR right now, only 4K/120Hz. Also, for some reason, I’m unable to use the game mode picture settings if I had the consoles connected directly to the receiver. Once A8A supports VRR, I might connect everything to the receiver.

@@mchambliss2 Ahhhhh , so port 4 with the game controller isn’t the only port to do 4K/120? In your case eARC would make sense. IDC about VRR from my PS5, I just kinda casual game with that. I have an i9 9900k with 64gigs ddr4 and an rtx3080 with dual Samsung CRG9’S as my main gaming setup, so I passed on a series X. Cool bro! Thanks for response and look forward to future content (and an a8a vrr update,LoL)!

Hey Max, great video. I was confused by the audio delay comments you made. If you have your xbox connected to the S95B and have the audio coming from your receiver using earc and have dolby digital or atmos in xbox settings turned on, is there a sound delay? I have the samsung q70r and when I have the xbox directv to the tv there is a delay unless I leave it in stereo mode. Im assuming there may be a delay because you have some on your apple tv if I understood correctly, Thanks for the info.

Ooops, sorry for the confusion. With the new update 1.65, If I have my Series X connected to my S95B and used my A8A audio coming from the receiver I experienced no audio delay. Before the update, I received an audio delay on my A4K TV, Series X, PS5, and my UB820 connected through A8A to the TV. Now I don’t have a lousy audio delay issue as I did before.

Hdr doesn't work in 4k 120 or 8k 60 modes. You are either mistaken or purposefully misleading people, but even according to yamaha details in the firmware, the 4k 120hz and the 8k 60hz are only for sdr 8-bit. I have my a6a hooked up to an rtx 3000 series, it limits you to 8-bit at 4k 120hz just as the firmware update 1.65 details indicate. Either the 4k 120hz with hdr isn't coming, or else it's coming in a later firmware update.

@@mchambliss2 I'm sorry sir. I apologize, there is a way to make it work properly, I'm not sure if you have it set up this way, but you have to switch the hdmi port on your av receiver to "8k mode" then it works. Go to Settings then to video/hdmi- > then select "hdmi video format", finally switch this off of 4k mode 1 and switch through 4k mode 2 until you get to "8k mode" which includes the options for 4k 120hz and hdr. I don't know what to tell you. Sir if you were genius enough to enable "8k mode" on your yamaha hdmi ports then it will work correctly, if you are in "4k mode 1" on your av it physically cannot do 4k hdr at 120hz, read it within the option menu. I hope this shedz some light. This update was confusing and stressful af for me until I figured out 4k 120hz hdr mode was part of "8k mode". Lol 😆

@@mchambliss2 According to the options menu itself, the "4k mode 1" can only do 4k at 120hz with sdr and that is what I was experiencing with my rtx 3000 series pc setup, but I switched it to "8k mode" and see that it includes the 4k hdr 120hz options and by golly it works. I haven't tried it with console, but if you switch it from 4k mode 1 to 8k mode it will fix any issues you may eventually encounter. Maybe you will actually notice a pq difference. For me, i only have rgb 4k at 120hz with hdr on 8k mode, on 4k modes 1 and 2, 4k doesn't work with hdr, lmao, go figure. Party on, dude. You have a good setup. I won't upgrade to qd-oled until I can get it with Dolby Vision on a Black Friday deal.

Lol, if you don't know, the 4k @120hz and 8k@60hz are both extremely glitchy, I had to restart it and switch the hdmi 2.1 ports on my TV, only one of my 2.1 ports seems to work correctly with it lol, I have experienced a glitch where the receiver was only giving me 30hz max and no hdr, but i fixed it, the 8k at 60hz and 4k at 120hz are without any hdr, sdr only so what's the point? This update doesn't support 4k at 120hz with hdr enabled. You're literally wrong. If you read the Yamaha firmware update it says it's 4k 120 sdr or 4k 60 hdr.
