    IMHO this is probably the most spot on review of the RXa8a to date . On mine, I also prefer the YPAO equalization set to the flat response curve. Despite my love of Yamaha's build and sound quality. I do wish they would put a greater priority on getting their firmware updates out. I am not a big fan of being an UN-paid Beta tester for a $3k plus receiver.

    The VRR/QMS/QFT firmware is done and it's already working. The reason it is not out yet is because Yamaha is waiting for an official certification for those features to be passed. Unlike some (you-know-who) other manufacturers that passed through those features without certification and then faced a shit ton of issues when their products were already out in the market (*hint* separate HDMI box lul? *wink), Yamaha prefers to have absolute 100% certainty everything is working and certified before releasing a public firmware update. This is how Yamaha has stayed on top of reliability for the past decade.

    The VRR and ALLM is now available as per September FW update, which makes Yamaha the first AVR to support HDMI 2.1 with VRR/ALLM with all their input ports - I believe. And they have thrown in the quite impressive Auro-3D upmix as well just for good measure.

    I have a question for you: can you see "hdmi 2.1" in the hdcp version menu? All I can select is 1,4 or auto...(version 1.80) I find it very bizarre. In my thoughts, it would be visible and selectable, isn't it? Thanks

    @@francoislavallee8612 You will need to go into the video format setting and make sure all the inputs are set to 8k @ 60 hertz setting. You will also want to ensure the TV you are using is set to handle the signal as well or it will down convert. Search you tube there are a number of videos that show how to navigate the menus to enable the settings.

I'm running the system with out of box settings, I'll run the calibration at some point down the road. But very happy so far.

    This is a very well done review being a Avantage user for 2 years+.Shane hit it spot on. Agree also on Dynamic set to MAXIMUM and YPAO "On, along with Audiohilics recommended setting. Importantly, Audiohilics also recommended EXTRA BASs set to Off because otherwise it'll do something to the low bass extension and limit your quality bass experience. I've played with that back and forth and completely agree with Gene's assessment. I would also add to Shane's assessment of playing around with PEQ. I'd say you must tweak and set your Gain up a couple of DBs from bands 1-7 for ALL your channels.Then see for yourself and results are transformational compared to any of the preset EQ settings..... For example: Go to 13:06. Then set the first 4 bands to +3.0db and leave Q as is because that's wayyy to complicated and advanced to get into. Finally set and also increase the last 3 bands to between +4db and +5db. Listen, listen, listen to before and after!!! You can play with that but definitely increase from the stock 0db gain EQ setting. Then you can increase your subwoofers 1 and 2 gain about +3 for all the 4 EQ bands.. Again that's give and take.. Please note I did all these tweaks after of course running YPAO and verifying my that all speaker levels were accurate with a decibel meter. I'd say results can vary somewhat depending on everyone's speaker system. But regardless by tweaking as mentioned more or less, I can assure you results will be transformational compared to any "stock" EQ Preset setting... Bon appetite and hope it helps and also throw me some pointers upon your experiences or something I'm missing...

    Why do you say the Q factor is too advanced to get into? It's just the width of the band essentially. Very narrow and sharp or wide and slow or anywhere in between

  • @MrMaxi3140

    @MrMaxi3140

    @@Jon-nz3dm you're on point!. What I mentioned is for your average user in order to get most out of their Yamaha's without having to run a sweep test with a laptop and software in order to determine any peaks throughout the bandwidth. Remember that I use this method for my personal space, using my ears as a basic tool so I can reach what for me sounds reasonably better than stock EQ presets. I'll be running REW in the future. For now I have some basic knowledge on room correction wizard but I have to dive a little deeper into it.

Got sick of hearing people in the forums moan about the fans (t778 and 740) and the bugs that kept popping up (t778) I suppose its about room eq as well but ypao sounds pretty good in my room, although I've never had arc or Dirac which are supposed to be superior but then having the peq's and the other customisables does make it easy(ish) to change it to your tastes. Definitely not disappointed and happy with my choice.

    I'd like to recommend an ARCAM HDR unit. It a high-performance AVR. As well Dirac Live room correction (@no extra charge), the ARCAM AVR20 also has an audiophile grade dac, a huge toroidal transformer, non-of-the-shelf (specially sourced) resistors & capacitors, plus a toroid amplifier. The arcam avr20 has very convincing realistic analogue sound (non-digital sounding), plus the unit is so well balanced, unlike the three mid-price Japanese AVR's I happen to audition, not only does it sound good at low volume, when watching a movie and the sound dynamics change. No more having to reach for the remote control. In fact, I can't recall EVER having to reach for the remote control! And to think cos it's successor, the ARCAM AVR 21 has now been released for quite a while. One can now purchase the avr20 for nearly half price (£2,000) It's the best sounding AVR I've heard to date.

    Thanks for the quality review, but I have a bone to pick. Why do reviewers always set everything to flat or make minimum adjustments, or just let room correction do the calibration? My Aventage out of the box after YPAO sounded gross, but after really dialing it in with the parametric EQ and turning levels up and letting my ears calibrate the sound, it’s excellent. Also, all (most of) those DSP’s are great, and you “would never use them?” Definitely feels like there’s too much snobbery associated with this hobby nowadays. Is there some sort of stigma associated with self adjusting and listening to other sound modes outside of pure direct for music?

  • @therealshanelee

    This receiver is truly a masterpiece. (this unit is not meant for the average user) This is only for those who clearly understand what an HT receiver is. the A6A is literally identical to it. I live in the UK but the weight of my A6A and measurements are the same as the A8A. they either made a mistake. because my unit weighs 47 pounds without the box. total weight is 52 pounds. it is recommended to listen to Audioholics to get to know all the details. this unit can easily reach 176 WPC at 8 ohms. making it the most powerful unit currently available even in June 2023.

    I don't own a Yamaha receiver, but have you checked your TV sound settings are on bitstream. If you are using a disc player, output the audio as bitstream too, then you are sending it "as is" and leaving it up to the receiver to decode the audio. If you choose to have the player output the audio as pcm, then you are asking the player to decode the audio before it sends it to the receiver. For What It's Worth, I hope this helps. Good luck, my fellow listener.

I prefer Class D, don't need more than 4K passthrough as it's being hooked up on my 1440p extra PC monitor for my office setup, and the Yamaha is just way too big to fit without making drastic modifications to my desk setup. I use to have the Yamaha A8A, but I had to return it because it was missing a lot of updates at that time. I remember when I try to set it up I ran into a lot of problems because of the missing update it made it nearly impossible to teak it correctly. In the long run, I ended up buying the Marantz SR-8015 & the Denon AVR-8500HA, and I'm very happy with their performance on Home Theater & Music. Plus, they didn't need a lot of updates to set them up either. I use to be a big Yamaha fan, but when I discovered the Marantz & Denon sound its been on turning back since I 'm very happy with their overall performance.

    Have u compared this to the Denon x4700h? If so, in your opinion, which one sounds cleaner movie watching? I’m having trouble deciding. I’ve heard the 4700h and it sounds amazing, not sure about Yamaha. I’m looking to upgrade my Yamaha TSR-700 as it has a “crowded” sound as if my room is small eventho it’s bigger than my brothers living room which he has the Denon and his living room sounds bigger than it really is. I feel the TSR700 is having trouble bringing out the low ends, and while I know A6A and A8A is a higher class, just don’t want to be disappointed.
