Avoid Power Killing Features on Yamaha AVENTAGE AV Receivers - Use These Settings!
Ғылым және технология
Yamaha's new AVENTAGE AV receivers have a speaker impedance switch feature which defaults at 8 ohms but has the option to set to 6 ohms or the "low" setting. Many enthusiasts think the low setting will make the amplifier better match their speakers rated below 8 ohms, but is that really true? I show you what the impedance switch does to available output power of the amplifiers in your Yamaha AVENTAGE AV receiver. I also give you hard recommendations on how to set this feature to get the best possible performance.

Thank you for the information Gene!! Great stuff as always!! Love your work… BOOM
I just subscribed because what you say just make sense. I'm in the electrical/electronic industry and unfortunately many peoples around just ignore the fundamentals and go on preaching their inaccurate doctrines. Always check the facts! Thanks Gene for just doing that.
Doing a somewhat budget 5.2.2 setup when basement is finished remodeling. Just ordered a2a and 2 sb1000. I'm setting mine up however Gene tells me to. Haha. But seriously, whatever I've learned from this channel in the last 2 months is what in doing. That's why I ordered 2 subs.
Like always.... Great info.! Thanks Gene. 👍👌👏
Thanks man. We just picked up an RX-A770 receiver and are figuring out how to set it all up. This seems like it will help us as we stumble thru the process.
Gene, great video and data points with regard to impedance selection and extra bass settings. Replacing my 27 year old RX-V690 Dolby Surround 5.1 (85 W/channel 2 channels driven) with the RX-A2A at 100 watts is a "beast" as you say. Dolby ATMOS sound is mind-blowing with volume levels set at -20 dB to -15 dB.
Great video. A true advice and comment with real measures. I have a A6A and I am learning a lot. Thank you, I want more ... The others youtubers coments about A6A is just bla....bla. I never give any credibility to coment that isnt based on real measures. Gene you are on the rock.
Truly informative for all Yamaha A/V amp owners. My vintage (1998) DSP - A1 has a switch on the back for 4 or 8 Ohm. It has always stayed on the 8 ohm position for 22 years. 👍

Thanks for that! Intending to get an A6A as part of a home theater upgrade as soon as they become available again (guess they're sitting on a ship off LA), replacing my old Onkyo TX-NR3007 (no HDMI 2.1). 7.1.2 system. Just looked up impedance on my old SVS MTS (6Ω), MCS (6Ω), and MBS (8Ω). Had thought lower than that, so good in any case.

You will love the upgrade. I did a surround system with 5 Martin Logan Sistine speakers (4ohms) and a Yam 3080. The amp handles the load and has more than enough power. Anthem is the upgrade when you need more power than what Yam, Denon, Sony, etc.. have.
Just got my A6A. Love the info.
I appreciate and enjoyed the video. Keep up the great work. I’m waiting for your final review on the rx A6A, to decide in buy it or the denon 4700H. I will use it mainly for movie watching surround sound and gaming on next gen ps5 and pc RTX 3080, so I kinda need more than one hdmi 2.1 port.
Better late than never.... Thankyou for your Power setting post for the Yammy A6A .. I just replaced my Denon X6500h with this new Yamaha receiver.. After several Reviews , a lot of complaints and praise, I took the plunge. Your other reviews that you posted with what this receiver puts out , and your honorable mention , told me this receiver is what I'm looking for . With other High end receivers/processors that are coming out without amplification without any Amps for twice the cost , kinda scares me on what the future cost of a home entertainment center will cost after buying enough Amps to fill your processor...... And the RX-A6A is the best chose for having the same power as the A8A and included BALANCED PORTS to Amp my front 4 Ohm speakers . This should carry me through for many years ....
Thanks as always Gene. Would you recommend upgrading from the Aventage A770?
I own the A6A. mine does not have a physical switch on the unit. but it does have it on the on-screen menu. However, Yamaha removed the 4ohm option via a firmware update and gave two options. 8 ohm and 6 ohm. I hope to see a new review of this awesome receiver. Thank you, Gene.

Interesting. I'd like to try one of these with a separate power amp. There's a second hand Luxman M-700 that I have my eye on. Shame the colours won't match.
Gene, how does the A6A respond when the balanced outs are utilized for the front mains? Does that give more oomph back for the remaining channels? Could you test that for us? This is the operational mode I was planning on using this product for.
You're right sir, I have been telling people about this for years
Hi. I have recently installed the Yamaha rx a6a receiver in a theater where there was a faulty marantz 9.2 receiver was installed before this Yamaha. Now, following your instructions as you have a lot of experience in this field. The speakers have changed there properties a bit. Some 4ohm speakers now have 3.5 or 3.6/7 ohms and ceiling speakers originally 6ohms are no now showing 6.5/7 ohms. Again I want to ask that should I choose the best matching impedance setting which is 4ohm minimum which means that fronts have 4ohm and others have 6/8 ohms. As we know that impedance matching is important for interfacing any two circuits. Lower impedence can cause overdriving of the amp and higher impedence will decrease the output power of the amp. Now this is a general concept. How can we say that a manufacturer not only Yamaha but almost all of them have created this feature/switch so user can select the impedence according to the speaker impedence is a useless feature. Yes you are right, if it will decrease the output power on lower settings, if not set properly can it effect the amplifier or the speakers by making the speakers more power hungry or forcing the amplifier to deliver more power? Your expert opinion is required.
THX again Gene.... The empirical proof is in the pudding... ALWAYS. My machine is RXA2080 but I suspect there to be a lot of parallels here given Yamaha's designs, parts. I didn't put much stock in Eco this and extra loudness that because you run your signal through even more chips and parts correct? K.I.S.S. Keep it simple... God Bless and long life ole friend.
Excellent video!! Thank you!! 8 Ohm here
Hey Gene do you where to find the bitrate information on these units
Thanks for the informative video....what are your thoughts...Im considering the Yamaha RX-A1080 vs the A6A to power 5 monitor audio speakers in a 18x 24 room with glass sliders...Thanks
Thx for the vid mr G
Thanks for this video. I was about to pull the trigger on an A6A… until I learned its 7 channel power. 52w is not acceptable and it’s unfortunate that Yamaha purposely cut power that drastically and there is nothing a user can do about it. My current Onkyo is bench tested at 103wx7, I’m very happy with its audio quality, so I’ll hang onto that for a few more years.
P.S. This is the morning of my third day of owning my A6A and the firmware update was waiting on me this morning . I went from FW update 1.59 to FW update 1.80 ... My system is running well with very few issues that all Have been resolved... This is a much better receiver than how it reviewed a year ago . And the remote plays well with my Sony TV... and runs several function for my tv , Samsung UHD blueray player , and turns off my cable box..... I use my cable tv remote for everyday use , and hit the power button on my cable tv to turn on my tv, cable box, and my receiver , A well as turning everything off.... all this without programing and right out of the box....
How do you determine what volume your getting the full rated power?
Thanks…one Day it would be nice to see how you set up the test so we can emulate
Looking to buy new receiver, thinking the A6A. Snell 5.1 speaker system right now, height speakers down the road. My question, was going to bi amp my main towers with the extra channel. After watching this would using the extra channel add more nanny's and actually cutting the power to my system ? Or should I still bi amp? I both listen to music and movies. Loud music, rock n roll.
Bought the A6A about a week ago and just today started working on settings and sound levels…. With the TestTone going through the speakers no issue until it came to the subwoofer 1 and 2. I have a pair of REL G1’s connected to the sub outputs and no sound during test tone and put on a DVD with big bass and again nothing. Subs work fine with my Hegel 390 as well as my Devialet Expert 220 pro using the high level output and the rca output on the Devialet. Any thoughts that this is an issue with others?
Does yamaha put these protection circuits even in there integrated line like AS 501,801 ??

What speakers can I use with the V4A receiver?
My Onkyo receiver has the same switch in its speaker setup menu. I assume that any receiver that has this switch should be able to adequately driver 4 ohm speakers, correct? Otherwise, there seems to be no reason to even include the switch if the receiver isn't capable. It's an Onkyo TX-NR727. Thanks!
Hello I am confused a need recommendations. I ordered the Yamaha Aventage A6@. I currently have a 5.0 system. I wanted to upgradw to a 5.0.4 atmos. I would like to get a preamp for my front L/R speakers. I have oñder Cerwin Vega VS series 15”, there RMS is 500 watt each. What type, brand or wattage do I look for. Econ price please. Also atmos speakers (mounted on-wall not in-wall) can you help me please.
I missed out, how many watts this receiver can set ate 7 ch 8ohms driven? around 60w?
I always wondered about this. I have 6 ohm Dali speakers and a Yamaha A3060 and i thought you were meant to set Ohms on Amp to match speakers precisely otherwise you could damage the speakers. In doing so it does affect volume considerably.

I have the 3060 to,, I love the receiver.
3070 set at 8ohm with 8ohm speakers, only way go. Gene I'm using two external amps, so my 3070 is only powering fronts and centre, what roughly would be the power going to these please???
Back before I knew better . I was using the 6ohm setting on my Yamaha a2080. My q acoustics are are 6 ohms. But after watching one of your videos from a while back. I put it back on 8 . But I have moved onto separates now. With a monolith 9x.
Now the question is, if i have 2, 7 channel amplifiers 200w ch, all 7 driven @8ohms, 300w all channels at 4 ohms. Do i use 4 or 8 ohms on the receiver in pre-amp mode? Still cant find answer to that. I have 7.2.6 atmos setup. Speakers are, front Dali Rubicon 8 4 ohms, center is 4ohms Rubicon Vokal, surrounds R L are Rubicon LCR 4ohms. Rest are 6 ohms Oberons. What do i do with setting in this case? I have DENON 6700 receiver, that allows selection of 8, 6 and 4ohms. I know it's not Yamaha, but pretty much same questions with this settings. Same Japanese Ohm settings. As far as i read, it's still best set to 8 ohms, as with 6 and 4 i am just going to lose dynamics.
So what's the purpose of putting 4,6 ohms on a receiver if its not practical to use? Would is be better to use a separate amp like the Emotiva XPA-7 Gen3 7 Channel Power output: 200 watts/channel RMS into 8 Ohms; all channels driven , 300 watts/channel RMS into 8 Ohms; two channels driven , 490 watts/channel RMS into 4 Ohms; two channels driven? I have until Nov 12 to return the A6A to BestBuy. I just wanna make sure its worth the money. Man , if Best Buy would've had the Onkyo TX RZ50 in I would've have that first and save my self a thousand dollar. Thanks Gene for what you're doing I really appreciated..

2 years ago I bought the Aventage A2A, and unfortunately, I've been very disappointed with the anemic power. I've been happy with my old Yamaha RX-V490 with a lesser power rating, and expected a slight improvement in power with the A2A. Instead, it was MUCH less power and I am now struggling with the idea of spending even more money on an external amp. Heck, I'm even thinking of powering the A2A with my old receiver until I decide. I tried both the 8 and 6 ohm settings - same problem. Especially with the 4 ohm speakers I had but even with the old JBL's rated at 8 ohms. The old receiver sounded better and had more power. I was hoping this video would tell me I was doing something wrong, so I could correct it, but no go. Obviously I'm not an audiophile, but this was step 1 in what I wanted to be an upgrade to my whole system, but now I find myself limited to highly efficient 8 ohm speakers - and I just don't want to settle. I also don't want to spend a ton more money on power (like more than $700.00 or so) - so yeah. Really disappointed in the A2A. (speakers were Bose 8.2, and/or JBL CF-120's). I will be replacing them but wanted to solve my power problem first.
Sounds like I should be good with power. I just brought the 1723s THXs to go with this. Moving on from my Aperion Grand Versus 1s. Wife doesn't know yet? Cross that bridge when I get there.

Thanks for a very useful video trying to help audio enthusiasts like me extract best performance out of the sound investment we have made. Have a question on this. Thanks once again hoping to receive a reply. Regards
I was under the understanding Yamaha does not use internal fans in the Adventage line. Is that not true??

I want a full hour deep dive talk. Maybe a "case study" of a 1500 or 2000 dollar receiver with 4 ohm speakers, 7 channels being driven vs what actually happens when you add a 5 channel amp and run 2 off of the receiver. Is it worth the cost in an average size room at less than reference (lets say 75db) listening level. What actually is happening over the course of a movie (or loud 2 channel) to justify extra amplification? It would be a interesting and educational video that no one has actually broken down with the expertise that audioholics could provide.

I have an R 100sw klipsh sub and my av reviewer is the Onkyo TX-NR595. I set the crossover on the reciver to 80hz and the level on the sub to 50%. When I run the automatic setup it sets the sub to +3db. Problem is, when I play any movie it just rumbles the whole time unless I turn the level down to about 25%. Any help from the community would be appreciated.
@MarkEwert
2 жыл бұрын
Is it truly bass rumble? Or vibrations? Make sure the sub is isolated from anything it can vibrate. You may then find that you just hear low movie bass as you should. The speaker tests are a quick punch - not a sustained bass track like a movie. I isolate front firing subs on a thick rubber paver on top of a 2' x 2' concrete paving stone (Home Depot landscaping area). For floor firing I isolate on the same but on top of the rubber pad I add a 2' x 2' x 1" thick square block of hard wood. Looks like a weird smore but prevents the sub from vibrating the floor or anything around it.
Ya had me a bit confused for a minute, you were saying one thing and the charts clearly said something different, and then a minute later it all came into alignment for me. Onkyo is my brand of choice and they use some kind of dynamic amp setup, I personally think it's mostly marketing. But you do have me curious about this as I have my receiver set to 6 ohms since all my mains are rated as such. I seriously doubt I'll notice any difference by switching to 8, but I'm willing to give it a try. But I agree 100% this really shouldn't even be an option at all since every amp on the market is load dependent already! In other words, the amp won't do anything until it sees a load. It shouldn't make a difference what you set the amp to since the speaker impedance is constantly changing while in use. I only changed my receiver to 6 ohms because of the dynamic amp marketing jargon, it could make a difference in my case if it actually does what it says on the tin. But I don't honestly know. Do you have any charts for Onkyo?

@LarsonChristopher
2 жыл бұрын
Use the corresponding tap to what your speakers are. Remember impedance is "nominal" and changes constantly with the music. Heavy bass tracks will be your low impedance stressors, classical music with violin solos are at the other end of the impedance load. Just be sure your amp can handle the load of the speakers, and also be aware when something seems too good to be true for the money...

Thanks for the info. Interesting. I guess my first instinct was that the impedance switch is there to protect the speakers as much as the receiver. Is keeping it at 8 rather than 4 Ohm going to have any affect in the speakers at high volumes? Cheers.
I think we get it now.
1:04 LMFAO! I know that scene extremely well!
Have yamaha got back to you Gene? Have got an a8 and have 7 days left to return, and am a bit nervous about how much of an improvement these are. Although saying that I don't fancy any of the other bug ridden competitors at the moment.

I'm also waiting on that review, I'm starting to get cold feet to the point where I'll cancel my A6A per-order and grab a cheapie until next years models drop.

@@UltimateGattai well everything is working apart from the ypao which seems to take away all the bass. But apart from that I'm happy, it has opened up my cheaper speakers a bit better but won't be able to tell properly till I buy my new ones. Just wish he'd update on yamaha's response. If there is one.

@@slyfoxx8540 that's good to hear, I really wanted this AVR to be good since I've only owned cheap, budget AVRs before, plus I want to add in 11 channels. I'm planning to get atmos speakers at the same time and install next year along with either a 2 or 3 channel power amp.

@@slyfoxx8540 I found the same thing on my older 3060, YPAO takes away the bass. Although the "Natural" setting is the least offensive I ultimately started using the "Manual" setting and keeping all speakers flat (No EQ) and bumping up the mid bass frequencies of the subwoofer just a bit. I haven't taken any measurements but it sounds better to me.
so........will it be ok to hook up 4 ohm speakers to these receivers? I know you said to keep it in 8 ohm settings but just wondering if that's the same for 6 ohm as opposed to 4 ohm or lower?

For the most part yes provided you have good ventilation. If the AVR Shuts down at high listening level, add external amplification on the front 3 channels to lighten the load.

@@Audioholics gotcha, will do. I don't have power amps but I have old receivers hooked up to my pre amp outputs. I have an old denon and an onkyo. trying to get the settings adjusted for those 2 however. I'm not sure if the eq settings in the yamaha affect the output of the 2 receivers I have hooked to it. for instance, when I plug it (my denon) into surround it has no highs (I set my yamaha to have only bass coming out the surround 2 speakers at they are just subs and don't have any mids or tweeters hooked to it). whereas when I plug for instance, the denon into the yamaha's "surround back" and the eq is untouched on that channel then it sounds fine coming out the denon. I'm just wondering if i'm wrong about how the eq works when plugging external amps into the various pre amp output channels or if messing with the eq for the channels that is being used by an amp/receiver will change how they output sound too? or am I plugging the receiver into the wrong pre-amp outputs? Hope I'm making sense here. I might make a video explaining what I mean if typing doesn't make sense.
Honestly, I tried AV recivers, and get tired of them doing funky busines with sound mixing, crosovers, and what not that is not exatly documented enywhere. Now just running signals in seperate components , pro speaker management dsp and power amp. Plenty of versatility and power. For a home gamer type AV reciver is way to go, less hashle, and almost plug and play. With pro gear you need to know what you are doing. I personally prefer pro gear.
Has anyone dyno tested the rx-v685 all channels driven
Is this just a Yamaha issue or for any manufacturer with a 4-8 ohm switch

Any AV receiver that has an impedance switch will severely limit power in the low setting.
In any case all speaker manufacturers lie that their speakers are 8 ohm nominal, so it doesnt matter much
My receiver doesn't even have impedance switch, but my highs are much more detailed and airy, mids are chocolatier and bass is much tighter when I switch it to 4 ohms.

Would using the Altra center speakers standing up as lefts and rights sound better than the Ultra book shelf’s them selves.

I had the same thoughts about the ultra center as left and right speakers, it's almost like having the ultra towers without taking up all that space especially if you also have a sub. Let me know if this is what you have.

Anyone who can tell how big of a sound difference going from an A2A, that i have now, to an A8A?
If you have 4 ohm speaker and if you are so much concerned, just add a 2 ohm resistor in-line and that would be better!
yamaha rx-a2a aventage is only 24ibs that's not a good thing in my opinion. If it has seven channels and comes in under 30 lb that makes me shy away from it.
I switch to 6 ohms and definatley noticed it was limiting current, switched back to default 8 and left it there, sounds better and louder with less distortion , yamaha system too.
Can anyone let me know if this yamaha a6a receiver has a better sound than the onkyo rz50? I'm not sure wich one has the best home theater sound.

@@Audioholics how about the a8a vs cinema 40/50?
Now some guy with his 9 Channel JBL speakers playing reference level sine waves while at work to break in his new speakers and wondering how his house burned down. I kid but I wish you would have at least given a brief explanation of why this setting exists. I know you've hit on it in your previous videos, but I'm sure you made some poor electrical engineer at Yamaha cringe saying you would never under ANY circumstance use anything lower than the highest impedance setting.
