XJ650 Cafe Racer Build part 1 - DOES IT RUN?!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

So before I start pulling this bike to bits, I felt it would be a good idea to see if it ran!

You can find a '82 XJ650 in pretty good condition for $1500 all day especially in California. People love these bikes to cruze the PCH, go to the beach, etc. Great bike for a first time build or budget custom job.

I had 1 of these Secas that I bought brand new in late 82. In less than 2 years I managed to put 12-14 thousand miles on it even though I had 2 cars I was also driving. Great bike for me as a beginning rider. In one of my longer days "in the saddle" I put in 700 miles in a day....mid Tennessee to outside Shreveport, Louisiana. Just a few months short of loan payoff some idiot pulled out of a side street into my path. I have come close to buying another one 3 or 4 times but something always seemed to happen to the money that I had saved for the purchase. Incredible that this series has 33+ parts, I always thought this bike was close to perfection...well, maybe the suspension is a tiny bit soft.

Well done fella, and what a fantastic bike to choose, these things are brilliant, bullet proof, and so customisable (proper word), it will probably take you through every emotion you've ever had, and then some. I had my first one of these in 83, my gf, then my wife, then not, but we're still together (I know) didn't want me to trade for a car even in winter, she loved it that much. Mine arrived in boxes, as most of my bikes did back then, mine was a 650 twin US Custom, it was a proper custom when I finished it, everyone thought it was a Triumph, it was a definite triumph as far as I was concerned. My wish for Jish, is all you can dream of and more.

Hey buddy as a motorcycle mechanic myself I've seen that black stuff out the exhaust many times when bikes have been standing along time.I see that spark plugs and looks very black means the bike is running very rich.Clean the carbs and set the air screws 2 full turns out just so they more or balanced just to get it started properly. If the bike starts and gives out white smoke it means piston rings are worn more than likely and oiling up the plugs.Clean the air filter also

Good effort! Looking forward to seeing how this turns out. I’m in the middle of building a er500 cafe racer to sit along side the 600 hornet. Best thing you could with the carbs is get them cleaned inside to remove al the gunned up fuel in the jets filled by carb balance both easy jobs. Bin the rusty exhaust in favour for a custom titanium jobbie. Oh and by a new battery !!!👍👍

  • @jishh

Hey, I bought a 91 XJ600 here in Aus about a month ago, been sat for over a year. You got lucky, mine needed the carbs removed and cleaned, the tank flushed, a new fuel filter and plugs to get it running. And I suspect one of the coils is not giving a good spark to Cylinder 1. I'll be watching this build intently. Cheers.

Well done on draining the old fuel and pulling the plugs, I hate it when folks try to start a stood bike without touching anything, I like to put new plugs in and dump the old oil and filter, the crud out of the zorsts is most likely rust as they have rusted away internally, again, I like to pull the cans off and check them before firing it up, you might have old mice nests in there, plus I've found old wasp nests in cans as well . Other stuff for your to do list, take an advanced riding course, do a track day, and do some riding in France etc.

Never hold the starter button on for that long. Good way to burn it out. If it doesn't start right away, something is wrong with it and should be addressed first. Fuel, spark or electrical are to be checked first. Suck, squeeze, bang, blow, the basics of an engine. It's obvious it wasn't getting enough fuel to start, so the carbs need to be checked. The valves need to be checked also and the shims are to be swapped to get the proper clearance in those engines (pain in the ass to change them)

This is the main reason why these bikes are becoming non existant. People keep chopping the shit out of them to make these god awful cafe bikes that serve no purpose. I have been hunting for an XJ for 2 years that hasnt been butchered and there hard to come by. Thank You
