Xiu Xiu Makes the Most Horrendous Synth Sounds Humanly Possible
Музыка
Toting an extensive range of sonic machines, experimental group Xiu Xiu’s driving members Angela Seo and Jamie Stewart recently paid a visit to our studio to give us a lesson on intentionally crafting “the most disgusting sounds” possible. With their eclectic assortment of test equipment oscillators, a towering Eurorack modular system, effects pedals, and more, prepare your eardrums to be blessed (or barraged, depending on your inclination for harsh electronic sounds) by the pummeling frequencies contained in this video.
With some of our favorite pieces like the Make Noise DPO, Verbos Harmonic Oscillator, and the aptly named Total Sonic Annihilation from Death by Audio, Angela and Jamie show off a few setups for building up immensely destructive audio. Their valuable insight into curating feedback and noise with intention offers plenty of valuable tips and considerations for prospective explorers of the unpredictable and harsher worlds of sound design.

Lol, I'm glad I'm not the only one that likes creating chaos. A couple months ago I bought a guitar with a sustainer pickup, and ever since then all I've done is create out there sounds with my assortment of pedals. I basically play my pedals instead of playing the guitar since the sustainer pickup does all the work. It's really opening up so many new possibilities that wouldn't be possible on a guitar without the pickup.

This is probably a really cliche suggestion, but have you ever listened to the first Grinderman album? Warren Ellis really channels some terrible sounds into actual notes. He does it on a violin too, much of the time, in his other band 'The Dirty Three'.

Tbh noise music is insanely captivating as a performance art. Or being part of actual song (Swans, Xiu Xiu). But having Merzbow albums it's really... boring to actually listen to it. But live shows are really cool.
In my brain Jamie Stewart and Sufjan Stevens occupy the place in my brain. Despite their music sounding very different, I see many parallels between them.

This video takes me back to the origins of my own nosiemaking when I was a teen, influenced by classic electronic music I heard on records. I had a wonderful boom box with lots of RCA jacks on the back. I plugged my guitar into one phono preamp input and the made a feedback loop with y-patch cables. This was before I knew about guitar effects pedals. I also had a Sony open reel tape deck with tune preamp and power amp I used for a fuzz box into a guitar amp with spring reverb set to 19 , to get Fripp tones. Then I took a risk and routed the auxiliary speaker output through a wahwah pedal back into one of the instrument inputs. Nothing broke but the amp made barking noises.
6:41 they WOULD put googly eyes on their osc knobs 😂
