Do the roots grow from the stem or the leaf nodes? Great video 👍 it's so hard to find detailed info about the silver dollar vine 🌿

Thanks 😊 the roots grow from the stem so it doesn’t really matter where the cut is made.

@@SucculentGrowingTips thankyou! That's very helpful 💚 I have to chop & prop a large portion of my plant. I'm moving house and won't be able to transport the large plant in 1 peice 😭 my SDV grows up & over the top of my greenhouse.

Yes, they do tend to run away with their growth once the plant is quite mature. Hope you’ll be able to propagate the lot 🙂🤞 i find the most important thing with SDV is to propagate in the growing season as it refuses to grow roots in winter (although it might in warm climates). Best of luck with the move 🙂

Just making sure - you don’t have to pluck any of the leaves off before sticking the cutting in soil?

Hi, it’s entirely up to you. If the stalk that goes in the pot is too short a leaf or two can be pulled off so the cutting does not topple. But if you don’t want to, you don’t have to- as long as there is a bit of stalk in the potting mix, the plant will root. If the cutting is too long or wobbly, it may need to be supported (skewer, sticks etc.) Hope this helps 🙂

Thank you for the video, very useful. I got some of these plants 8 months ago with few leaves only. Now they are about 25cm long is it normal growing rate for this plant? Now I want to propagate it, will it grow root faster if put the cuttings in a closed clear plastic container? Like small green house?

Hi, the growth rate will greatly depend on your particular climate, where you grow it, how good your potting mix is and how often you repot. Our moderate climate can see XD grow multiple branches of over 30cm long every year but it is not likely to be the same all over the world. Re. the mini greenhouse- personally i would not recommend this as it can get very humid in a small space like that. It can rot your cutting. A nice warm and super bright spot (no strong sun tho) should be good. They also grow much better and faster outdoors 🙂

Thanks for the video. I've been wanting to find out how to propagate this plant which is my favorite plant at the moment. How do I get all the leaves to be plump and round? I'm from Asia and I have mine in direct sunlight with a weekly watering schedule and using succulent soil. I do check soil first each time before watering. My seller said I should water more frequently to get those leaves to plump up. Thoughts?

Hi- great idea for a new video 😀 the leaves plump up with time. In my opinion there is little you can do to plump up new growth- just have to wait until the plant gets older. For us, it takes about 6 months to plump up (a bit longer if new shoots grow just before the plant goes dormant for winter). It also depends on the cutting that was used in the first place- if it was a cutting from a branch that was already plump the plant should not deflate, but stay plump. If the cutting was a little less mature, it will again take time to get the whole plant more plump. We grow these under 30% shade cloth as in spring/summer temperature can easily go over 35C but if you don’t get these temperatures full sun should be ok, thought i would keep an eye on it. If you see burns, it could be a good idea to move into a bit more shade/filtered light. Hope this helps 🙂

Hi, i think what you’re thinking if is a called a caudex. Their root area will grow as they age, so bigger the plant bigger the root. Also bonsai plants can grow swollen root, though not sure if XD is the right plant to use as a bonsai specimen 🙂

Do you water the planted cuttings right away? How often after?

Hi, we usually water cuttings once the potting mix has dried up. How often will depend on your particular climate, weather etc. so imo, the best measure is the state of the potting mix. When its dry, give it a good soak 🙂

The leaves of my plant are almost drying out, they very thin, how can I help it recover?

Hi, do you have your XD indoors or outdoors? Also do you water often? If you have it indoors I’d recommend putting it in a bright spot and water well when the potting mix dries out. The leaves can start drying out if the plant is in too dark a spot/not watered enough/in winter/when the plant is a cutting trying to grow roots. Xerosicyos is quite a hardy plant and should recover quick once the problem is addressed 🙂

Hi, thankyou for sharing the video. I've propagated my silver dollar vine around 3 - 4 weeks ago & only watered it just tiny bit. When I checked it this morning, the leaves looks very thin, im not sure if my propagation has failed. There be roots by this time, should I water it more? Thankyou.

Hi, the leaves can sometime dry out a little bit, so it all may still be ok. I would water it more- the cutting will appreciate frequent watering, as long as the potting mix is not soggy for days (let it dry out for a few days between waterings). Also, keep in a super bright spot, preferably outside or on a window sill. No harsh sun at this stage though. You may want to have a look at our website succulentgrowingtips.com- we have a more in-depth article on how to care for and propagate XD. 🙂 Hope this helps a bit..

Is there a way i can propagate this in water??

Hi Fernando, i’m not sure to be honest. We don’t do water propagation as we’re a nursery usually do 1000’s of cuttings at a time. Propagating in potting mix is by far the best method for us. Sorry I couldn’t help with this one...
