Xerosicyos danguyi Houseplant Care - 174 of 365
Commonly known as silver dollar vine or silver dollar plant, Xerosicyos danguyi has become a relatively common houseplant, though I haven't seen many that had been grown from seeds and that have developed the iconic caudex. Whatever the case, this plant moves into the #174 spot of "365 Days of Plants".

It's taken me a full year to find this plant but I love it so much! I actually noticed the yellowish leaves as well and after a dose of fish emulsion my silver dollar vine returned to that gorgeous sagey blue green. I keep mine in an east facing window and it is happy as can be!
I didn't know they needed something to vine on or else they dry back, thanks for the video Summer.

Does that mean they won’t trail well?
Wow, I didn't know they naturally have a caudex. Id love to know more about the "twining & vining" succulents you're taking about 💚

I have this plant. A friend had it. He gave it to me and I'm happy I have it. It's a full planted vine. However, its not a vine, at this point but, an afro. It loves indirect light. It does not like the direct Sun. I'm going to play with my new plant. Thank you.
love them
So far I haven't had any pest issues. A new shoot popped at the end of summer and it grew to 5 feet within 6 weeks in bright indirect light. I used organic orchid fertiliser (it was al I had that I knew was gentle enough). It's getting much cooler and darker for longer now in Scotland and the growth has slowed down. The other mature branches are not doing much so I guess I'll have to figure out a way to promote branching to get a fuller plant.
"I'm avoiding the big plants" DELAYING THE INEVITABLE SUMMER RAYNE lol!!
I remembered asking this Care during plant swap when I got one, this is an awesome plant, slow grower for me; but I love it! 🌿🍃
I absolutely love those plants, but don't have one because I really haven't found enough of the "home growers" information out there. Thank you so much for doing a "care" video on them. I'm gonna take the plunge now and get one. I'd like to try and locate a seed grown silver dollar if I could. Thanks for posting!
I watch you Summer because of your great pronunciation of the plant names. I am growing this in North Scottsdale AZ outdoors in about 2 hours of direct sun light and it is growing wild. I flood water twice a week in the summer heat for a full dry out and it seems to be loving it.
My friend just mailed me one. Informative video. Can’t wait to see mine grow!
This is my favourite plant. It took me a long time to get one and I was ecstatic when I finally managed to get a hold of one. My plant is thriving. I like to know though how to get the leaves plump and round. I have mine in direct sunlight and water once a week. Using succulent soil.
Today is my birthday...i was so happy and surprised that my fiance bought me your book!! She knows that I watch your posts almost daily....thank you for all the knowledge you give plant lovers like me #plantgeeklife

I have this plant sitting under the sun for about half a day. It seems very happy. I am in Santa Monica ca
I grow mine in a hanging basket an it has gone crazy an yes mine did the same thing with the yellowing of the leaves an I did have it in any sun but once I upped the feed she turned shiver green
Mine i just hang it on my growing avocado tree outdoor. Its doing good. Taking shade and food from avocado. I use to water it when it was small. Now, its doing well in its own. Philippines its always raining when dry season starts/summer, i water it.
I have two and I'm growing one in regular cacti soil and another in LECA. The one in LECA has really thrived and produced new leaves for me while the one in soil hasn't done anything for me within the 8 months I've had them.
I keep my silver dollars nice and green with a supplemental spoonful of worm castings bimonthly. It definitely appreciates a gentle slow release nitrogen boost!

Thanks for this info, it helped me figure out some potential improvements for mine! :)
I bought mine as three little 2inch pot babies in very sandy substrate. I left them in the nursery pots for months coz I liked them too much to risk repotting. Once they grew to just under a foot, I merged them into the current pot with no new soil (again, was too worried haha) . A year and a half later, they are finally long enough that I want to give them a proper pot and trellis to cling on to. They're about 3ft long, I keep them outdoors in the porch, they get filtered tropical sun. The new growth is not as round or thick and I'm guessing that's due to lack of nutrients so I'll be giving them some now. I've also recently bought a new 3in pot that was pretty yellow in the nursery itself but I couldn't help myself coz this was only the second time I've seen it being sold so I grabbed it. Thanks for the info on yellowing and sun vs nitrogen! I shall try fixing those, it definitely seems to be possible in my case
That larger pot is so beautiful. I wish they sold it online. Do you know if it’s made by Chelsea Garden Center or another source. The color is lovely.
I think being matchy matchy actually makes the plant stand out more!
I have mine in an east facing window. I also use worm castings. Biggest issue is watering. Sometime I need to water more
Love the plant and I can tell you do too👍

Amanda Wong Do you water or soil propagate this? I’m new to this plant and also got a cutting. Thx!
Mine is light green and leaves are flat! I had it directly inn the window with a lot of direct light. I have another one in a window that have a medium light and that one is perfect. I just merged the two together in one pot and placing them in the window with less intense light. I hope for the best.
I bought a cutting of this plant earlier this year and it is almost the size of your bigger plant, however I noticed that the silver dollars are thinner than the ones the plant came with. I am growing it in an east facing window. Should I increase the fertilizer? I checked, it is not root bound.
I keep learning new things about the plants I have and the ones I'm searching for. I didn't know that it was a caudex plant and that the only way you have a caudex plant is if you grow it from seed, if you get a cutting it will not have a caudex, so interesting. I would love to find one of these, the only ones I have seen are from cuttings. Thank you again Summer great video and I will see you again tomorrow.
Do you have any Pachypodiums? They are my favorite!
Love This Plant And Love The Fact That It Is a Vine. I Have One That's About The Size Of Your Small One That I Grew From 2 Cuttings. I KEEP Looking At The Ones Being Sold On An Etsy Shop Called Pride And Joy Plants. I Believe They're Based In New York, Summer. They Are Being Sold In White Hanging Pots SO I Will Probably Wind Up Buying One...OR Two!!!
WOW! Is there another plant in the small pot? something with red specks?
it gets really thirsty in the summer, I watered it quite often during summer.
Where do I cut to make more ? Can I stick cuttings right in the dirt
Any advice on leaf thickness? My new growth leaves are so thin! They don't seem to be thickening up at all.
Will you do a video showing how you water plants.
YES my favorite plant!

How do you propagate this? I have two little stems that almost died on me. I’m trying to salvage it. Help!
Hello Summer, I've basically repotted my plant last winter, when I do re-potting, I usually change the soil as well, so this guy didn't really root for the last 6-7 months, was wondering what kind of soil they like? My plants usually sit in 80% inorganic material, mostly lava rock, zeolite, pumice, some basalt and akadama. Yeah any care tips are welcome, thank you in advance.
I was wondering if, since Madagacar has a subtropical climate, this plants care might be somewhat comparable to Hoya. In the sense that they do not like wet feet, but also do not like to be too hot and in burning sunlight. Beautiful plant, not very common in the Netherlands.
Any info about water propagating cuttings?
Mine does not have any new growth would you recommend to use fertiliser anyways? If so would a controlled relajase fetiliser work? Thanks
Had one for two years in bright indirect light. Wouldn't grow. Wouldn't die. Repotted and put in full sun. It is growing like crazy.
Do u have the Arabian wax vine plant.. i love its leaves with visible veining..easy to propagate too..
What if its leaves start falling off?? They are not watered often until its soil dry.

I’ve been waiting for one that isn’t a cutting or seeds I need to start. This one is definitely on the list!!!! Green with succulent, cauduciform jealousy!!! 💚💚💚🤗
Hi there I have just purchased one of these from our local plant land in Pretoria. I must say it was extremely expensive. Is this a sort of Hoya? I have no idea, I just fell in London be with her.
I just got a cutting and its starting to wrinkle. What can I do?
I'm interested in propagating mine with a cutting as my current one might be slowly dying (from overwatering). Once I cut it and allow the end to dry and stick it in soil, should I water it regularly? Or water it, allow to dry completely, and repeat?
@michellelau4253

I recommend sticking it in soil and just spraying it with water very couple days. After a week or 2 start watering it a little to prevent it from drying out, but just don’t over water! ;)

I have bought this plant twice and both times the plant started to pucker, the vines turned yellow and dry, and the leaves started falling off. I only watered it once a week or if soil was dry.
