Peperomia argyreia (Watermelon peperomia) Houseplant Care - 46 of 365

You all know how much I love my Peperomias-and this one is a relatively common one but is surprisingly sometimes hard to find because I think many people like these but lose them (I've lost a couple in my day). This one, you may have seen throughout some of my Home Tours, and I Speak more about its care in my Peperomia Care videos.
Otherwise, I'll be touching upon where this plant is native to, how it grows, where I'm growing mine in my home, and other basic care tips.
You can check out more of these videos here and on my IGTV @homesteadbrooklyn.

You should make a video about how to keep plants alive when they're in containers with no drainage! I saw in your tea tin succulent video that you had all those plants with no drainage which has, in my experience, been a death wish lol.

Just water them less, and let them dry out pretty thoroughly between waterings. Most succulents can take a pretty severe dry out without wilting or dropping leaves, although some do better than others. If peperomias get too dry they can drop leaves, but I think after awhile you'll just learn how dry they have to get before that happens. I've found that some succulent plants (peperomias) are way more susceptible to rot than others (succulent kalanchoes, which can tolerate being kept surprisingly wet). Another trick when putting a plant in a pot with no drainage is to use a somewhat-smaller pot than you would otherwise use for a plant that size. This works really well with peperomias, which have small root systems and seem to thrive when rootbound. This helps to keep them from sitting in water or waterlogged soil for too many days, which is what triggers the rot. In general, if the soil hasn't pretty well dried out after a week, the peperomia is getting too much water or is in too large a pot. One other thing - if you're worried you've overwatered a plant in a pot with no drainage, if it's small you can often just take it to the sink or tub and dump it on its side. Excess water can then just drain out. You can also do this to leach salt out of the soil - salt buildup, from the tapwater or from fertilizers, can be detrimental to many plants.

I find that by having them next to a small table lamp and watering in tiny amounts when it gets dry, really helps them and even by letting them sit in a 1/2" of water so that they can pull up whatever water it needs.

This is my most fickle plant (and I would consider myself somewhat advanced). I rescued it from the perils of my office as it was irregularly watered and had crispy edges. Most of it rotted off and I ended up saving a sprig of it. I'm slowly getting new growth but the new leaves appear to be dramatically curling inward. It's hard to find answers about this so I'm just holding off on the watering. Between crispy edges, brown spots and curling... it seems like there are so many things that could go wrong!

I really love this series, you are so knowledgeable and helpful with plant care. I have a question and I would love to get your input if you can. I recently bought a large (5ft or so) established bird of paradise. I keep it in an eastern window that is back about 5 feet because of a balcony with an overhang, it still gets maybe 3 hours direct sun daily. I watered it about 3 weeks after bringing it home, as it was dry, and I left it on the balcony in full sun for the day. I noticed immediately after doing that the leaves were curling a bit and maybe starting to brown on the tips which made me think it might have had too much sun? Now the plant has been a bit droopy and seems to be going downhill with the leaves seeming to still be curling. It has been about 2 weeks since I watered it. The soil still seems dry. I have heard that curling and a bit browning might also mean the plant is dry. Do you think it had too much sun or perhaps is just not getting enough moisture in general? I run a small humidifier on it while I am home but maybe that is not enough. I would really appreciate your thoughts. Thank you!

Lower light?? Interesting! Mine was getting leggy so now it is right in my west window with at least 4-5 hours of direct sun. Looks less gangly and spaced out and more “bushy,” which I prefer. I also find this plant responds a little too well to my over-fertilizing. The leaves are almost the size of my palm lol oops. But the huge leaves really add to the bushy look.

@@Sarah-xg1vd be careful with harvesting your own shells. You need to process them extremely well to leach out the ocean salts that can harm your plants. Perhaps you could try hydroculture? This should facilitate the watering. I recently got a "raindrop peperomia" from our little local flower shop for free because it had lost half of its leaves under the care of a well-meaning apprentice and has been suffering from root rot for about a month. After repotting it in a very well-draining mix and cutting off the rotten roots I hope that it will recover or that at least one or two leaves will that I then could use for propagation. We shall see…

I had a beautiful one of these back in the early '80s, and it also somehow got overwatered and died from rot. Maybe my most painful houseplant loss. A few tips for keeping peperomias: * They love to be rootbound, and have small root systems. Keep them in a substantially smaller pot than you would for other plants the same size. This helps to ensure they dry out after a few days and don't sit in standing water or soggy soil. * Use lots of vermiculite, perlite, sand or similar material in the potting mix to maintain aeration. You want a mix that oxygen can get into. * Check before watering. Stick your index finger into the soil. If the pot is more than 5" deep, and the soil isn't dry down to the first joint on your index finger, you probably shouldn't water the soil yet. * NO STANDING WATER. It's best not to grow peperomias in a pot without drainage. Although I've successfully grown a couple of pepper plants for about 15 years now in pots with no drainage, I've also or nearly lost them two or three times to rot. * If they do rot and start to collapse, take cuttings from above the rot and try to start over. I've nearly lost my two pepper plants several times over the past 15 years, but I've always been able to restore them fairly quickly from cuttings.

I try to tell people all the time if they want beautiful plants they must first make sure the roots are properly taken care of cause any issues down below will always show up as different indicators on the leaf structure such as brown spots ( usually cal mag deficiency) or burnt tips (too much nitrogen) also watering only when the soil is dry is necessary alot of people think plants should always be in wet soil. I love this plant! But mine has really dark brown tips on the half of the leaves and they turn crispy. I dont see anyone with the same problem!

Too much fertilizer the nitrogen is burning the tips! Try flushing it and repotting it in fresh soil

Hope you sent an apology to Steve & the crew at Steve's Leaves. Hurricane "when will you have them back in stock" is now forming over the Atlantic...😄 This is by far the #1 plant my friends hit me up for. Unfortunately, I can't keep all of mine healthy and spread the plant love due to the demand. 😔

@@PamsPrettyPlants it's a tough nut to crack! It's a big ol' drama queen as much as any calathea or fern. It's like it wakes up one morning looks for a reason not to go on living.

@@PamsPrettyPlants are they crisping up on you or is more like a mushy rot? I didn't start having success until I made my mix a bit sandier and switched to a pot that's wider than it is tall. Btw, Hoffman Bonsai Soil Mix when you need to lighten up and better drain that soil girl! 😉👍

I see many of those in the box stores with this same problem, so likely the grower doesn't take ideal care of them as well as the stores do even less. Beautiful plants in the store, but this kind of damage on many of them.
