It did what movies orginally were made to do - to entertain us and take our minds off our troubles if only for a short time and your hearts can become young again and believe in magic.

Unfortunately, even back then, I believe we were starting to become a pretentious lot. Now that's definitely true. America was beginning to forget what it is to just sit back , be entertained, let our hair down, and enjoy something. This constant "need" to critique and criticize everyone, and anything, seeped in starting with the 1960's, and has gotten worse as time went on. Today we are so eager to tear the world apart with constant negativity, it's a wonder we are functioning at all. If this movie had been an idea in 2020, I doubt it would have gotten past the drawing board. It's not dark enough for today's warped society. Personally, I've always loved *"Xanadu."* My best friend and I went to see it in the movie theater at the time. Being a teenager then, we walked down the street, singing and dancing the songs as we made our way back home that evening...

Deborah 78. The only way “Xanadu” would work in 2020 is if they catered it to the progressive liberal agenda and the social justice warriors. It might be an even bigger hit now than it was in 1980. I was too young for the movie theater release by myself; but I saw it a year later on HBO. It was a horrible movie all across the board. However, the only redeeming qualities were a smoking hot Olivia Newton-John and the ELO soundtrack.

Deborah 78. I’ll say it’s entertaining when it’s late in the evening, you’re chilling at home with friends and you’re all tipsy or stoned. It has A LOT to do with how attractive ONJ is, especially for a heterosexual male. I could name three who could do “Xanadu” today: Amanda Seyfried, Julianna Hough, or Taylor Swift (great feature film debut for her). I think Xanadu 2020 would be a refreshing change from our vampire-loving bloodthirsty (no pun intended) culture. Like I said, it would have to be PC and left-wing inspired. I think Kate McKinnon would be good if they wanted to go the sapphic route or Rebel Wilson if they do the “fat is beautiful” angle OR even make Kira an African-American and do a whole hip-hop routine.

@@lakebay972 ~ I didn't say there wasn't anyone who couldn't play the role today. But Taylor Swift? Yuk! I wouldn't listen to anything from her if I was paid to. For me, her music is boring, bubble gum pop. In all honesty, I wouldn't bother to even go see another Xanadu. Because I know it would be trashed. And again, with the cult like society that we have today, it simply wouldn't work. At the very least, Hollywood would turn it into some trashy, head shaking, foul-mouthed; ghetto style hooker fest. Because I doubt they would get any white actors to play those roles a second time around. As far as how attractive Olivia was, sure for you. But I have the feeling most of the people who went to see the movie were females. So no, her attractiveness wouldn't have been a factor for the majority of the movie goers. More like her singing, because the soundtrack did better than the movie itself...

This movie bombed its release in 1980. I’ve always said wrong time and place! The 80s and early 90s were not ready for Xanadu! Not even sure our current decade is sentimental enough to understand the enteral love of this film. The music, the dance.. the everything. Xanadu is and will always be something extraterrestrial.

I believe part of the reason it wasn't successful was because the movie was only released in 249 theaters across the country. That number was "supposed to be 700. Why that happened has never been explained. However, we are such a dark, warped society now. If they had pitched the idea today, I don't believe it would have gotten out off the drawing board. Ever since the late 1960's America had started to become very cynical. Gone were the carefree times of optimism, enjoying ourselves, "the love of living" if you will. *Xanadu* exuded, & celebrated all those things...

Gen kinks as I understand it, it actually made money, but did not perform as expected and received a critical mauling. I am a huge Olivia fan, and it has wonderful music which sold fantastically, the movie has high production values and the musical numbers are wonderfully staged. But even as a die hard fan I couldn’t deny its story falls flat. The ‘drama’ scenes are amateurish. Olivias role as a muse means she is kinda disengaged, which comes across as flat and frankly it would have taken better actors than either Olivia or Michael Beck to rise above poor script and direction. I wonder if the musical sequences were directed separately as they really are strong.

Absolutely, it's clearly inspired from out of this world. This clearly shows that the Muse is real. Not only this movie was so well put together which will leave unforgettable experience but also the references to the Ancient lost world which is mostly forgotten the director was very brilliant and clever and had done of lot of research including duality, conjuration and divination.

I was born in 1980, I saw Xanadu in a german TV (I’m near the German frontier) and It hypnotized me. It was in 1990, and soon I saw again in French (my language) in a Belgian Tv. It takes almost 12 years to find Xanadu : thanks Internet !! I’ve never forgot this movie and the songs!! I’m alive : the first song opening the movie, was in my head since my 10’s!! What a pleasure to rediscover the movie 12/15 years later!!! Now I.m 41 and I let see the movie to my daughter : she loves it! Xanadu is so underrated and un-understand to the 80s public : Glad to see that today Xanadu is popular!!

The music and dancing are exceptional, but can we get some love for the set designer and construction team that built the turntable dance floor in the center of the scene? Take a look at what's going on starting at 3:40 .... - Rotating dance floor, moving smoothly enough to dance on, and sturdy enough to hold eight adults - Multiple light groups in the floor perfectly sync'ed - Pedestal in the middle, raised while the rest of the floor is rotating, lighted separately, and strong enough to hold a person Fantastic work! How was it built so precisely using 1980 technology?

My mum and dad hired two films on the same day in 1986, Xanadu and The Dark Crystal. Both lead Characters were named Kira. Guess what my name is lol. Spelt the same too. This movie and Dark Crystal will forever be my favourite go too movies. I’ve just started skating again. Which means two things, recreations of Xanadu, and educating people upon this movie lol! And repeating Samuel Taylor Coleridge Xanadu poem. (Only the first couple of verses though lol)

"Xanadu" was worth the 9 month wait,(once its release date was announced in the big 4 page pullout ad inserted into Variety magazine,(Dec,79). So, 08-08-80 couldn't hv arrived any sooner. The film delivered what it promised & it's still joyous. Olivia was white hot, enough so, to lure Gene Kelly out of retirement. If you "got it" when it first came out, then you were in on a well kept secret. Universal got nervous at the VERY LAST minute & opened it in only 700 theaters, instead of the contracted original 2,400 screens. It did turn a profit in the years to come. If you attended any festivals, you would be among thousand of mega fans up on their feet, singing and dancing in the aisles. The best festival I've seen it at was in 2004, at the Ford Theater. It was as fun as any midnight showing of Rocky Horror. "XANADU is an innocent, fun, colorful romp, jam-packed with fantastic music and the star power of two greats. I have never understood why Olivia has always felt the need to apologize for it in interviews. It's pure joy.. it's hard to believe that the world's"forever youthful," Olivia is no longer with us, She's left such a great legacy of music, film and philanthropy..Olivia was and always will be the very best. May She Rest in Peace. 🌨️ 🕊️ 🎵

Having never seen the whole movie, I have never understood the dematerialization of the dancers in the apotheosis at the end. For some it always puts in my mind of the Carousel sequence from Logan's Run. I would say the whole sequence is radioactive with 1980-ness. Could be no other year.

I wish that the song "Fool" were a full-length song that Olivia Newton-John had recorded at an earlier stage (the sound is reminiscent of the "Totally Hot" album which she released in 1978) or that there were a full-length version of it instead of just a fragment.
