one of my favorite moments in comics is when Beast brings the X-men from the past to the present day point in comics and Jean asks "how did I die" and Beasts says "which time" and she doesn't know how to respond to that.... to know you die in the future is sad but everyone dies you know it can happen... to find out you die multiple times? that is something different altogether
I laugh when Beast tells Wolverine "Boy, I've been fighting for mutant rights before you had claws." In truth, Wolverine was the oldest mutant in that room.

Not only was it shocking and mind-blowing for most of us to see Patrick and Ian digitally de-aged, but that technology was so groundbreaking at the time that many articles and videos were written about its use and the potential to digitally change the appearance of actors on screen in the future (much of which we have definitely seen at this point).

@@hulkslayer626 So many people seem to have a hard time separating the comic from the films. They seem not to understand that the comic are completely irrelevant to the films, which are an entirely new artwork that must be considered independently on its own merits.
The reason this movie gets hated on is because "Dark Phoenix Saga" was a pivotal story arc in the entire run of the Xmen comics, and this movie was a pale illusion of an adaption of that story. But the franchise make up for it with "Days of Futures Past", another pivotal story for the comics and one of the best Xmen movies overall, and it is the one that JLaw stars in.

Yeah, they really messed up the Phoenix Saga. Jean is supposed to get these vast abilities from an external source. It's not supposed to be a dormant power she always had. She literally destroyed entire worlds, and was put on trial by alien civilisations for her crimes. Limiting the story to Earth completely destroyed the magnitude and scope of the storyline.
@anonymes2884
25 күн бұрын
The reason it gets hated on is because it's a bad movie (the script is disjointed, key characters die with very little narrative motivation, it's missing the humour of the first two and the action is generally pretty lacklustre - all IMO of course). Very few that saw it could care less about the treatment of the "Dark Phoenix Saga" from the comics (that's not a diss on comics BTW - love 'em, wonderful art form - but they have nothing to do with how mainstream audiences view movies). (conversely, 'Days of Future Past' is a _good_ movie, with a coherent script and basically every beloved character from the franchise - again, very few that saw it could care less how well it adapted Claremont's arc. Also, Jennifer Lawrence is in 'First Class' too and yet you're the second person i've seen in the comments state she's in DoFP as if it's her first outing)

I think you are underestimating how many true fans of the source material there are and how it does in fact end up affecting the business. When you change a beloved storyline or character, (which is the reason comics for example would sell so well) in order to adhere to an agenda, why would you expect your audience to consume it lovingly? The guy with blue fur, played by Kelsey Grammer, is named Beast, just like Wolverine, Rogue, Storm, etc. There are three Wolverine movies, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which tells his backstory, and introduces the character of Wade Wilson/Deadpool, played by Ryan Reynolds. Audiences liked his portrayal of Wade and HATED how they depicted the Deadpool character. Actually, he wasn't really Deadpool. Then there's The Wolverine, a stand-alone story featuring Logan. And finally, there's Logan. After this movie comes the prequel X-Men: First Class. Which was made because the studio wanted to "reboot" the series with younger actors, but they didn't want the fan backlash that would come from just remaking the movies, so they made it a prequel. Then they added a little time travel in a later movie, changing the timeline, and presto, they can make movies with a younger cast and do whatever they want with them. They also ignore the fact that the stories stray into the same time period as depicted in this movie, but the characters are still being played by the new cast, rather than these original actors, as should logically happen.
I personally would recommend the *FIVE* episode Dark Phoenix story arc from the 90 X-Men Animated Series any day over this film for anyone who wants a perfect adaptation of The Dark Phoenix Saga. For me the Animated Series is the definitive version of this storyline so it saddens me so much when films try to adapt these amazing stories but just miss the mark by a light year. Same thing happened with Batman & Robin (1997) a film that pulled from the Batman Animated Series, episode *Heart of Ice* but did not come close to the masterpiece of storytelling that is the Batman Animated Series. Sometimes I feel like Animation is just the way to go for most comic book media but then we get some amazing comic book movies and shows and I think "Wait a minute this is amazing stuff" and then Madam Webb releases.... Then Invincible and X-Men 97 are amazing and you think "Maybe Animation is still the way to go".

They were wrong about that. Leech's powers do not switch on automatically. Rogue or any other mutant could use their abilities in his vicinity, he has to consciously shut them down, and that won't happen if he is surprised or his concentration is broken.

@@Rocket1377 That doesn't seem to be true in this film universe. Otherwise, he would have turned his power off so Kitty could make them escape through that wall. Maybe in this universe he'll learn that kind of control eventually -- or, then again, maybe not.
*Angel* & *Beast* The "Eagle" character is called Angel (Warren Worthington III) who made his first appearance in X-Men #1 (1963) and was an original member of Professor Charles Xavier's X-Men appearing alongside Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, and Iceman. Marvel Girl being Jean Grey's name throughout the original 1960s X-Men comics. Beast (Hank McCoy) also appeared in X-Men #1 and like Angel was an original member of the first X-Men team. During this time Beast didn't have his iconic blue colour or fur at all and resembled a human with big feet and hands. *The Little Kid* & *The Morlocks* The little kid who can "cure" Mutant abilities is listed as Leech a kid from the comics and X-Men Animated Series but the movie differs greatly from his comic/animated appearance. In both the Comic and Animated Series Leech is depicted as having green skin with big clear eyes looking closer to depictions of classic green aliens than a human in terms of his face. He was taken in by the Morlocks a community of mutants living in the underground tunnels beneath the New York area living as outcasts thanks to how they looked, unlike most of the X-Men excluding Nightcrawler and Beast most of the Morlocks cannot hide their Mutations and suffer the most from Anti Mutant, hideous and deformed according to the humans. The church scene in this film did showcase the Morlocks but I would've preferred more unique physical Mutations, film highlighted people with unique facial structures that made them stand out but I wouldn't say it made them look like a Mutants just normal people with a one of a kind face. Compare this to someone with spikes sticking out of their body to a person with white skin and massive red eyes. I feel like the people behind the film didn't want to go too far into the "monstrous" thinking it would scare away the more mainstream audience. Judging off how they made Leech a normal looking kid which is a shame as the Morlocks are such an important aspect of this world and so are Mutants who stick out as differant. But regardless we still got characters like Nightcrawler and Beast giving you an idea of how much a Mutation can change a persons phyrcial appearance. *Lack of Personality* Alot the background Mutants are pulled from the comics minus their iconic outfits so most of them are easy to miss. After watching X-Men 97 i started to re-remember how much personality all these Mutant characters have in both outfits and character designs something the films strip away unfortunately for alot of them. It's like Captain America showing up in a tank top with a star on it... I feel like Superhero films during the early 2000s were just scared of showing anyone with a colourful unique outfit. This is something we've thankfully overcome in the past two decades and even before this during the later half of the 2000s we started to see more personality come into the outfits worn by characters from Watchmen to Superman Returns and Spider-Man.

I LOVE how Carly is like, "isn't that his dad?" and "I saw the chess piece move!" And Cassie says no both times. And I'm just yelling at my screen, yes it was, yes it did! Think it happened a few weeks ago with another movie where she recognised a younger actor and Cass was like, no I don't think it is him. I wonder if this is common in big sisters who take the lead and discount theories and questions that the little sis have haha. My older brother definitely would! 😆 Also I'm fine with them skipping a few but I really want to see them react to Logan. It's a must! Probably the highest critically reviewed one left from critics and audiences, and I'll definitely be crying along with them!
Someday they'll get to watch "Logan". It's the film that Patrick Stewart and Hugh Jackman wept together on opening night. Many raw cut onions were served in the concession stand that evening.
Do NOT try to figure out a comprehensive timeline for these movies. Think of them as alternate universes.

Hank IS called Beast or The Beast. Also yes the Chess piece did move. And yes Charles put his consciousness into that person’s body so he technically isn’t dead!
I still remember the audience reaction to Magneto moving that chess piece.
Just posting without looking it up (cbf) The Mutant 'cure' ends up to be only temporary (hence Magneto moving the chess piece at the end) Prof X did in fact transfer is consciousness into another body right before he died (when he was talking to his class about it, the body in a coma, in the 'zoom call' during the class is actually his twin brother! His twin brother is brain dead so its kinda ok for Xavier to take it over)
However, the soft reboot XMen that come right after this have two instant classics back to back. XMEN FIRST CLASS is appropriately named as it is first class all the way. Incredible blueprint how to reboot a series right. However, XMEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST is the high water mark and XMEN movies finest hour. No spoilers. This was the highest grossing X-Men film for 8 years. Yet it's considered one of the most hated. Brett Ratner replacing Bryan Singer as director was because Singer bowed out to do 'Superman Returns' (strange choice to some). This one moved a little quicker than the first 2 films and upped the action (a la' video games and animated series). Between Jean becoming the Phoenix, this new cure being made and Magneto staging a final attack to tip the balance did make for some goodness. So much was cut from the film as the alternate versions of some scenes and deleted scenes are actually pretty cool. Most of us following the franchise knew that this was the end for the moment. Fox wasn't done and more X-movies were coming. But last and not least, X3 did another milestone as the first-ever Marvel movie with a post-credits scene.

I let her know how much I enjoy you Cassie and I love the the dynamic between you and Carly when she joins you.
The X-Men, particular the comic book era written by Chris Claremont and illustrated by (fellow Canadian) John Byrne with inking by Terry Austin is a treasure trove of some of comic's best stories, but sadly, no film has ever really reproduced the original stories or matched their quality. The entire Dark Phoenix saga was a masterpiece, but would have needed the film budget to be doubled for an accurate recreation. In that comic arc, a mind controlling villain named Mastermind infiltrated Jean's mind and then courted her in the Victorian era in a time travel simulation. This was done with the help of an evil mutant consortium called The Hellfire Club. He was the reason her mind broke and Dark Phoenix emerged. And when it happened, Jean just didn't vaporize a few people. She blasted across the universe and destroyed entire and solar systems with alien civilizations. To end her rampage, it literally took an inter-galactic battalion of powerful Alien super heroes to slow her down long enough for Charles and the others to try and bring her back, while preventing her from devouring entire galaxies. Jean's death was a jolt that caused the letters section of the following comics to be filled with upset fans who were shocked and brought to tears over Jean's demise. I'm hoping that someday, perhaps not even in my lifetime, that a future filmmaker will reproduce their stories accurately with the budget necessary to pull them off. Until then, this franchise is just a bunch of action movies, loosely based on the comics and written to reach the widest possible audiences to turn a profit. Still, they're fun in their own way, and the reactions are great, as usual. But to the original comic fans of these stories, nothing produced on film so far has captured the emotional gravitas of the original comic books.

The critical reception and public opinions of this film were both very divisive and mixed upon its initial release. Regardless of whatever your thoughts, praises, or criticisms are on this movie, the one thing I think we can ALL universally agree on is that choosing Kelsey Grammer as "BEAST" was one of the absolute best choices they made and it’s astounding how well they were able to get this character down! From his casting, to his make-up and prosthetics, to his sophistication, to his mannerisms, to his animal-like fighting, even him reading upside-down! Next to choosing Hugh Jackman as Logan/Wolverine and Patrick Stewart as Xavier/Professor X, this is without a doubt as pitch-perfect a realization as a cinematic X-Men character can be! Which REALLY makes it such a pity that the film producers and executives (or whoever's in charge) NEVER asked him to reprise his role after doing this movie, especially seeing how wonderful he did here AND the fact that Kelsey Grammer has voiced his desire to reprise the role several times!

The X-Men franchise's perfect casting decisions: Hugh Jackman as Logan (though he's too tall and good-looking, he nonetheless nailed Logan's personality and savagery) Sir Patrick Stewart as Xavier (to the point that many people coming to the books from the movies are SHOCKED how morally dubious Xavier actually is because Stewart so defined him) Sir Ian McKellan as Magneto Kelsey Grammer as Hank McCoy Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler (though they could have used more of his fun-loving swashbuckler personality) Liev Schreiber as Victor Creed Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool Dafne Keen as X-23 Josh Brolin as Cable Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik I'd also say that Famke Janssen was a great choice for Jean, and many people did enjoy Taylor Kitsch's portrayal of Gambit. There were other good choices, the problem is most of them (such as Lana Condor as Jubilee, Olivia Munn as Psylocke) were criminally underused and just didn't get enough to do to show it. Fox may have made a lot of missteps, but when they actually did connect with one they CRUSHED it.

I would have recommended that they skipped a Live Reaction to this one. They were totally confused the whole time and didn’t understand anything about how this one played into the comic books or animated series story arcs. When these movies came out, those who knew the comics and cartoons watched their favs come to life or fall flat on the big screen. By the time XMen2 came out, everyone unfamiliar with the XMen had already done a deep dive on researching these characters online (especially the wiki pages) so that they weren’t confused by the plot or characters in the movies to come. We talked to our parents, our kids, our grandkids, our grandparents, our aunts, uncle and cousins, and our friends about their familiarity with the origins and story arcs. This is how I know that these Reactors really don’t like the movie recommendations if they are not even interested enough to look up any information for unanswered questions or get the back stories of these characters on their own. Most don’t even bother reading their comments where viewers tell them everything about everything. We couldn’t wait to find out (enjoyable homework, knowing we could ace any pop culture test). They choose to sit in ignorant confusion (taking the 0 in class, all semester long, barely opened the book) before, during and afterward. I just don’t understand it. Most of the time the trailers told us everything we needed to know except the How and What’s Next; everything else we read about on our own or were already very familiar with. Too many of the Reactors either want to be or have to be spoon fed the answers because they have brains too lazy to want to do the work for themselves. But that’s just my opinionated review and I am just one viewer.
This movie just flushed down the toilet some of the best stories of xmen comics only in exchange for a few impactful scenes and saying "I want to do my own thing". They scr* it so bad that they had to find a way to undo this mess in the following movies.

Some of the other movies are prequels that take place in the past, but there are time travel parts and then story re -boots. It's crazy, the continuity is all over the place.
The Phoenix story is about the X-men going into space to defeat an evil alien D’Ken dictator of the Shiar and stop him from using the M’Kran crystal to take over a part of the galaxy. Jean gets the powers of the guardian of the crystal, The Phoenix. It takes the X-men, the Shiar guard and Space Pirates called Star Jammers to defeat him. The Star Jammers are led by Corsair/ Christopher Summers, father of Cyclops. Cyclops dies in this movie because the actor was also in Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns movie which wasn’t very good.
