Cyclops finally taking charge and becoming the serious and stoic leader that he is from the comics would've been so nice to see on screen. It would've felt completely earned, considering how they did him dirty in the first two films. Making it truly feel like "X-Men" and not "Wolverine and Friends" And having him kill Jean's body would've been such a great send off/ ending to both of them. Sadly none of that came to fruition and now that trilogy feels like one big character assassination of Cyclops. One that emasculates his character for the sake of glorifying Wolverine.

I feel that he was done more dirty in the latter two films of the OG trilogy as we got them, cause he was brainwashed for most of X2 and, as we all know, had to be unceremoniously killed off-screen at the beginning of The Last Stand. At least with the 2000 movie I felt that he got to have enough time to shine alongside Wolverine and Storm, which is one of the reasons why I still like the first movie best.

There is no mention of Bryan Singer's antics on the set of X1 and specifically X2, which was detailed Alan Cumming's book, confirmed by Halle Berry and others. The situation where some of the cast attempted an intervention over Bryan's drug use and absences. This is very relevant in retrospect, because it definitely sheds new light on 20th Century Fox taking so long to sort out a deal for him to direct X3 as well as being so quick to replace him (although, hilariously they replace him with someone just as problematic). It also makes 20th Century Fox and big bad Tom Rothman seem slightly less evil than originally suspected.

Yeah the ending was the only great part of the movie. X3 was great b/c the powers were used more and more accurately. No more lighting coming from a cloud and zapping near Storm, but actual lightning coming from her fingers. Unfortunately, Brett or whoever told him didn't make it comic book accurate enough so people didn't see it muliple times. That Professor X killing statement was a croc. Everyone in the theater was in shock, pissed and ready to fight, and/or walk out b/c they went there when no one asked them to. If Phoenix had risen from the water, that would have helped. The gravity powers seems like a way to keep Jim Lee from making a live Gen 13 movie if you ask me...

It's not just in there to be in there, it's a symbol of Scott's paranoia, grief and attempt to control variables. In the finished film...it's a setpiece and then that's it. We don't even get an explanation as to why we're seeing it, how it started or anything. Having Scott come up with the Danger Room as a reaction to Jean's sacrifice is fucking poetry.

Superhero films can work when the hero or heroes fight a new and different villain in each movie. It gives you new material and different interactions between characters. Fox loved Ian McKellen's performance so much they brought him back for X2 and then Last Stand. He was great in the part but it just gave you the same thing over and over. Sony is awful at superhero movies. In Venom, Venom fights a symbiote. In Let There be Carnage Venom fights a symbiote. I'm sure he will again in the next film.

The cure storyline could have worked here by using Jeans evolution into the phoenix: Jean returns out of control while mutantkind is dealing with the development of a cure. Sides would be drawn between cyclops who wants to use the cure to stabilize Jean and avoid losing her again and those who reject the cure as an attack on mutants. Jean would be caught in thr middle due to her desire to keep her powers versus her fear of where her powers are going. Somethibg Something Jean realizes her struggles with her powers is because she has been fighting her own evolution and chooses to embrace her powers and go where they take her asking Cyclops to vaporize her body and release her rapidly expanding conciousness into the universe. Cyclops begs her to stay but in the end, he agrees to let her go and with a primal cry releases the biggest concussive blast of his life and vaporizes her. Jean's choice brings mutantkind together in rejecting the cure except in the most extreme of circumstances. Rogue who had also been struggling with the choice would choose to keep her powers with hints that she may yet gain control of them someday. The end.

The Phoenix Saga and the Gifted storylines are two huge and deep storylines to squeeze into the same movie. Although I do think they should have adapted the Gifted storyline to help with introducing the X-Men in space concept because while it focuses on the idea of a cure, the cure is a result of an alien (Ord of Breakworld) coming to Earth to kill mutants before they destroy his world. If I was the writer/director of the movie, I would keep this aspect, but make it so that Jean was the mutant they feared.

That said, I'd have loved to have seen Singer's take because his X-Movies are my favorite ones in the franchise (yes, even the bloated yet superficial Apocalypse). However, given the ideas presented here, this would have been a much better version of the movie, but I would add one caveat. Instead of Cyclops killing Jean of his own volition, I'd have her control him and make him so it so that the impetus of the decision is hers and not his, maintaining the sacrifice in the original story.

If you think about it, James Marsden wasn't in Superman Returns much. He appeared on multiple movies back in 2006. Same as Hugh Jackman. Did you ever think of doing videos on The Mummy movies. I think one of the major reasons the Phoenix storyline is hard to make really good for film/or at least this series of films is that there is no larger allegory which it can be noticeably and immediately be recognised as. The whole X-Men story is human vs mutants and the theme of prejudice and how a marginalised group either stands and works with their oppressors diplomatically or choose to take vengeance on them - that in itself is a story rich in humanity and relatable to our reality. The Phoenix story meanwhile is much more a simple plot which only poses ethical conundrums which only matter and relate to the characters in this fictional world, and it poses fewer questions and issues compared to the prior two films which are really resonant in AND outside the fictional world. The only way I could see the Phoenix story connecting to that larger theme is if you frame the storyline as analogous to an Oppenheimer moment for humanity in which they discover that finally a mutant equivalent of an atomic bomb is alive on this planet. The conflict would be framed around whether or not mutants and humans use that power for good or not. That’s the only way I could see it fitting into the larger thematic story. But even still that conflict isn’t quite so perfect a summation of the real conflict at the core of the story, it feels more like a tacked on secondary problem and less a resolution to the already established larger conflict set up in the prior 2 films. So at the very least this would have had to be a part 3 of a film series and then the 4th film would have to be the final one in which the series returns to the larger core conflict which is X-Men vs. Magneto / vs. Humanity.

X-Men: The Animated Series shows it can be done extremely well. The Phoenix saga itself is just your classic good vs. evil storyline. There is always room for such story. The Dark Phoenix Saga, demonstrated that there are real considerations. It is tied to the fact that Phoenix is not just a split-personality, but a deity like creature that had possessed Jean Grey. When that being possesses Jean, it possesses the fullness of human emotion, the good and the bad. It finds a taste for the bad emotions, and relishes in it. This kicks off the battle between the X-Men and the Shi'ar. Major ethical questions...What is inside of Jean is capable of destroying an entire Galaxy. But to destroy it, means destroying Jean. That is a major ethical dilemma. Making it a split-personality is crucial. Because through the series they establish that Jean has an incredibly gentle and warm-hearted spirit. The true, "Girl Next Door" vibe. So, when this incredibly destructive being inhabits her, it makes the tensions stronger. Also, it makes Cyclops sacrifice at the end all the more heart-breaking. They captured Scott's love for her better than the movies have ever done (sadly). The absolute trauma of having to kill the good woman that he was over-taken by a galaxy destroying entity is heavy. Honestly, perfect for a movie, possibly too heavy for a kids show. They have a blue print for an amazing, emotion packed story. It came out only a few years before this one. They didn't use it. Amazingly, the X-Men: The Animated Series also had a good story that could get fleshed out more about the cure, they didn't use it. X-Men: The Animated Series demonstrated there are amazing stories to be told from the X-Men. Cinema or even live-action television has incredible capability to do so, as they can be relieved of some of the limitations placed upon the cartoon. However, they don't do it. DC has made the same mistake for years. The DCAU built an incredible universe, with rich characters and stories. Yet, again they don't make good use of them.

Omg yes! The way they treated Scott was so disrespectful. He cried, Jean showed up, they kissed, he died (which we didn't see), and the film kept on pushing. Didn't even really talk about him after Jean and Wolvie's conversation after they take her back to the school until the end. And tell me why Storm, who has always been seen as one of the most powerful even when she wasn't treated right, was getting bodied by Callisto, who was nothing like her comic book counterpart? That was goofy to me. And Rogue... That is all. Even from the first film, the moment she showed up on screen, I was pissed. 😂 She didn't even call anyone "suga", and that's her trademark! 😭

No, you could argue Blade laid the foundation which X-Men benefited from. And let's not forget that Blade came before The Matrix as well.

I don't care what anyone says, X-Men 3 is one of the best Marvel films ever. I've always loved it, it's one of the only films of ANY kind that could make me cry even after seeing it already. The moment when the Professor dies, and the ending where Jean is killed by Logan, both were always very special film moments to me. I never had any idea that there was ANY person who disliked this film until over a decade later. It's not perfect but I wouldn't change it for the world, and I think it's 1 of those movies that most people loved, but reddit and forum posters over the years got people to act like yes men and go along with the notion that it wasn't a great X-Men film.

@@Bulletsandblockbusters I guess it was a local thing. It was pretty hyped when I was in high school at the time. It was many years before social media was a thing like it is now though... I'm sure there were lots of things people enjoyed and believed were great but, years later found out most people didn't quite feel the same! It could have had a little more context in certain areas, but I always liked the direction that the film took. If you cared about X-Men, I think it would have made you emotionally invested in it.

@@MoneyHoneyBunny X-Men 3 was an atrocious movie, and not at all accurate to the characters or the comics. It was hyped where I was too, and I'm the type to easily forgive movie mistakes, which is why I've seen the movie a million times, but objectively speaking, it really isn't great. A few things I loved also had cons to them. For example, one thing I loved was Storm getting more screen time, but the con was, her powers were never showcased as the omega level mutant she is. Like, she was getting bodied by Callisto, who, mind you, was not at all like her comic book counterpart. Psylocke was tragic, Juggernaut was a mutant(?!), and they killed Scott. I can't say Xavier's death was bad; his death scene was actually amazing and emotional, but Scott got taken out like a punk. He deserved more than that. 😅 There was no build up to it. Jean came back, he died, and the movie kept it pushing. 😂 He isn't even mentioned beyond Jean and Wolvie's conversation until the end of the film. They treated him like a dirty dog. And he's not even my favorite. Rogue is my favorite, and from the very first moment she hit the screen in the first movie, I was pissed. I was 10 years old and complaining that Rogue wasn't flying around punching bitches and being sassy. She didn't call anyone "suga" once, and that's her trademark! It's funny to look back at how Singer would set up certain things with his movies only to end up not getting his intended payoff for one reason or another. His first X-Men movie still holds up quite well on its own IMO, but then for X2 he wanted to make a pretty obvious point of setting up that Jean was going to come back in the 3rd movie as Phoenix (the only thing that really keeps X2 from being as standalone as its predecessor), only for it to of course end up playing out the way that it ultimately did because of his time being devoted to directing Superman Returns instead. And then with Returns we got more of a slower paced story about Superman returning to Earth and how the world had moved on without him just so they could plan on saving the more exciting stuff for the sequel (like Luthor's Kryptonite landmass that Superman hurls into space becoming "New Krypton" in the sequel), only that backfired as well when WB didn't consider the movie successful enough to go through with the sequel. And yes, maybe some audiences at the time were expected something more action packed right from the start. Whether its the cancellation of his Superman sequel or The Last Stand arguably beginning the decline of his original X-Men film series for some fans, Singer's contributions to comic book movies just couldn't seem to catch a break.

Hot take: X3 wasn’t THAT bad. It featured the action the other two lacked. The first two are amazing and the second one is brilliant. But, if they would’ve adapted the comic Phoenix storyline into this more “realistic” take on the X-Men, it wouldn’t have worked. They tried later with Dark Phoenix and still didn’t work. Also, they made everything about Wolverine, kinda understandable since Hugh makes such an amazing role, but I’m interested in the other mutants. Also, I can’t stand First Class.

Angel doesn’t even join the team either, he’s just there to save his dad. I just wish we could’ve seen all the X-Men together and Scott leading them. That one major thing the Fox films got wrong, Cyclops is the leader and him only being the leader in one film and killing him off is bullshit. I hope the MCU dose him justice

I just watched the Dark Phoenix (2019)... I could feel why it flopped and if I wasn't a comic book fan I would have never felt the way I did at the end of it. X-Men 2 is definitely one of the best X-Men movies there is. I have no idea how anyone enjoys them without reading the comics though.

X-men 3 should have been the introduction to them being with Spider-Man and hulk in fox universe, since phoenix is super strong

X3 and Spider man 3 both really derailed both franchises how the first films in both start great with the sequels improving on every level building hype for the 3rd just for both to be packed with a lot due to studio interference. As for x3 vs returns I suppose fox won cause it out performed returns at the box office 457m vs 394m.

I think I would prefered Brian singer's X-Men 3. And I DEFINITELY would have waited until he was done directing Superman returns to come back and finish his X-Men trilogy.

Given to copyrights, the X-Men will be renewed after 2025 for the sake of Secret Wars and The Kang Dynasty. Marvel Studios was pushing one movie forth and one movie back. They cannot have those movie as 100% as seen in the comics, but we cannot have them without the X-Men. They may be recasted, which tells us it may be the last time they will be there as OG actors for the Fox X-Men universe. Looking at this, this is how I rank the Fox X-Men Universe based on how much of it I watch: 1.X-Men-10/10-A 2.X2: X-Men United-9/10-A 3.X-Men: The Last Stand-6.5/10-D+ 4.The Wolverine-8/10-B 5.X-Men: Days of Future Past-8.9/10 6.X-Men: Apocalypse-11/10-A+ 7.X-Men: Dark Phoenix-4.2/10-E- 8.X-Men: First Class-N/A 9.Logan-10/10-A 10.X-Men Origins: Wolverine-1.2/10-E+ 11.Deadpool-10/10 12.Deadpool 2-10/10 Presumbly, if it had gone by the side view of Bryan Singer, who came for X-Men: Apocalypse, then we wouldn't be suffering to see this universe on fire with recognition. The first 2 X-Men movies were better than X-Men 3, but by the time it was near to the MCU's Iron-Man, like The Amazing Spider-Man 2, it bombed, presumptiously dooming the whole universe it belongs to unless there's a chance of rebooting the universe. Focusing on the X-Men and many people is important, but focusing too much on just Wolverine is not very elegant and definitely serious as a method or forte by the wayside on custody of Fox for this movie. Not only this, but Fox doomed the X-Men more than a couple of times, even to Avengers: Age of Ultron in which case Marvel didn't want the Skrulls to be in the movie. The creators at Marvel Studios killed off QuickSilver as a ploy. Ridiculously as spoken, thsnk you for this. As far as I understand, the movie's original plan by Singer is the most suitable version for this movie's saving grace. The MCU must not kill off people without reason to contend to. I believe we must wait until Deadpool 3 to sed what is it out of the Fox X-Men Universe for the MCU and the deal has been due after almost 2-3 years from now. At least, we can see the mutants wearing their leather suits as seen as in the comics and teaming up or fighting against the Avengers for the sake of the Phoenix Force and Cyclops like in the comic event, Avengers vs. X-Men. What do you think, guys? Do these mutants need a redemption arc?
