    @@SunnysFilms What we should’ve gotten was Jean as a well-developed character in at least 2 or 3 movies as the counselor troy of the group NC mentioned a couple times, like in the comics & cartoon show, & THEN she turns into Dark Phoenix- or at least wait until she’s an adult & not still a teenager. It would leave a much bigger impact in the franchise’s history, like Wanda finally turning into Scarlet Witch at the end of WandaVision. But instead, there was very little time given for her character to develop at all- & they had 5 movies in 2 separate timelines to do that! & Jean’s not the only one. There are many female X-Men characters with compelling stories in the comics that deserve to be told that barely get any character development or even recognition. Rogue, unrecognizable. Storm, only remember her from the "toad who got struck by lightning" line, unfortunately. Jubilee, only shown briefly twice. Psylocke, another forgettable side villain (though, I will give Olivia Munn credit for committing to her role despite the limited amount of screen time & lines she had). The only exception was Mystique until they fucked it up in the last movie. If there are more, it probably means I forgot about them. Even some of the male characters like Cyclops & Nightcrawler are barely represented as their comic book counterparts. "X-Women" is not going to change the fact that the studio doesn’t really give a shit about representing female (& some male) characters the way that they’re supposed to be in the comics.

If there is going to be Rogue in the MCU, now that Disney bought 20th Century Fox, I’m certain they’ll actually get her character right & not just have her be a useless, timid teen who barely uses the one power the movies gave her. Here’s hoping.

Boom, movie writes itself.

    @Fordo007

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@99annanic January Jones gets a lot of flack for the flat performance in First Class, but that wasn't actually her call. The director wanted a flat icequeen despite January Jones trying to go for something else. So you get some moments of personality with her eating while the general is believing he's having sex, her grinning when Xavier and Magneto walk in on it. But all that was January coming up with that. I remember originally she was supposed to be seated with the general when the table would rotate and January suggested having her stand up and close the blinds just so she could do something. And from the interviews she gave, she was expecting to come back in more films as one of the X-men as she said she really read into the good-guy era of Emma Frost. Which I think would've suited her A LOT better. January Jones can do comedy very well and she could've been a very good snarky Emma Frost as one of the X-men. Being a villainous Emma Frost? Not so much. But I feel Jessica Chastain would've been the reverse, being a good villain but not really as great a good guy for Emma. And even if Jessica Chastain got the role in First Class, she'd likely be hit with the same criticisms because the portrayal of flat and emotionless WAS a directorial intent. So no actress could've made that work short of convincing the director to change his mind. January Jones and Olivia Munn both played my two favorite X-men women and I do appreciate both at least got their characters to look as close to the comic as they could and then tried to squeeze in as much character as they could.

    I absolutely disagree that this clusterfuck is better than "Apocalypse" and I will at least explain myself. (because it's fun lol Deadpool: LONG-ASS COMMENT, COMIN' UP!!) At least it didn't anger me in way "X-Men 3" did, when something heavy like the death of a character happens, it's taken at least seriously. Nobody barely gave a shit about Cyclops dying, and even Xavier's death wasn't treated with the heaviness it implies (not helped that they later retconned it), when Havok dies, it's tragic and he stays dead. And Jean comforts Scott over it, which at least is more bonding and meaningful conversation than whatever the fuck Cyclops and Jean had in the original X-Men films, there was barely any chemistry between them despite being great actors. "X-Men: Apocalypse" is a hot mess, but hot messes are enjoyable and I found "Apocalypse" to be enjoyable for the most part even though it's a far cry from X-Men 1-2 or "First Class" and DOFP. My biggest problem with it "Apocalypse" is just that Apocalypse himself is a bit of a dumb villain who seems like he doesn't need his four horsemen or to fuck around with Xavier and could just destroy everything on his own instead of giving the heroes time to stop him, and while it makes some sense that Stryker would reach out to the X-Mansion and suspect them, his part of the film still felt very random, he seemingly gets away with it and nobody talks about the encounter with Wolverine, it almost borders on a Big Lipped Alligator Moment. But at least on face value, it was a better version of "X-Men Origins Wolverine" (also, I was one of the lucky people that didn't see the trailers so his scene was an utter surprise for me) Again, it's a hot mess. But to me, an entertaining hot mess. ..."X-Men 3", the Wolverine films that aren't "Logan" ("The Wolverine" got really boring as fuck after the train scene and the villains are utter jokes, at least Apocalypse had some good villainous moments that I personally find appealing) and "Dark Phoenix" just PISS ME OFF and left me in a shit mood. For all its problems and missed opportunities, "Apocalypse" leaves me entertained and I have fun imagining a sequel with Mr. Sinister as the villain with a new Hellfire Club that ends the "young cast era" more gracefully and maybe sets up the events of "Logan". I'll continue having my imaginary version of the movie that connects "Apocalypse" with "Logan" while "Dark Phoenix" can fuck off, and they should try to execute the Dark Phoenix storyline in a TV show after spending time with a great iteration Jean Grey, it's hard to do in a movie. "X-Men 3" did it sliiiighly better, but it still sucked ass and did too many things wrong. The acting in "Dark Phoenix" is much worse, it has way worse bad scenes, it wastes even more potential (SUPER PISSED they didn't do anything about Kurt and Quicksilver being the sons of Mystique and Magneto, that's in my fantasy sequel), the lighting is shit, it LOOKS more fake, staged and shitty and at times when taken out of context some scenes don't look like they belong in an X-Men film, and the "good moments" in it are nowhere near as enjoyable as the better moments of "Apocalypse". It's just a way more inept film on every cinematic level than "Apocalypse". And at least "Apocalypse" doesn't have cringe lines like that "women always save men" bullshit Mystique says. Peace.

    Here's why The Dark Phoenix saga never worked in any of the films and never would in the future if they'll try again. The dark Phoenix saga is a climex. Not only to a much larger story the films always skipped, but it was also a climex of sorts for Jean's character.. A character the readers were following for decades (until she was brought back of course but still.) you don't jump into the climex right ahead because the story would not make any sense and nobody would care for the characters. If you'll read the TPB of dark Phoenix without any context, odds are you'll be underwhelmed. The only way to adapt this story successfully is through a TV show. That's why the animated series version of the story works, they don't skip anything and we had enough time with Jean prior to the story. I don't think the movie format really works for X-Men. There are simply too many characters and stories and not enough time.. Not that it's impossible to make a good X-Men movie, it was obviously done before.. But I think the films should be the big events, while the TV show is everything in between.

It's a shame because Kinberg, for what it's worth, tried. Apocalypse may fail less than DP, but it also tries less. It's just a rehashed dull film. DP is Kinberg desperately trying to do the story he's wanted to tell for 20 years (Kinberg wrote the script that was originally going to be X3, but Fox had it rewritten to the point of being unrecognizable), even though Fox (And later on Disney, since the entire third act was redone literally because Disney said it was too much like CM) was basically doing everything to ruin it. Would Kinberg's full vision have been good? Probably not, it's his first film and he was being thrown into a huge franchise blockbuster. But damn would it have been better than this neutered film we got. That's how I feel about DP. I don't even think it's terrible (Apocalypse and Origins still hold that place for me). Honestly, I think Charles doesn’t get enough credit while mystique is praised by everyone in these movies: He finally creates peace with the mutants and the humans, while mystique joined a terrorist group that literally left her childhood friend paralyzed in the sand. He gets flack for sending his students into harms way even though they’re old enough to go to war if they want now-I mean these kids are basically volunteer firefighters and they act like their conscripted soldiers-and mystique suggested the same thing when they were even younger. He does alter a child’s memories, which is messed up, but if you look at it, it’s only one memory, and it’s no different from someone just lying about what happened to spare the feelings of a child. I don’t feel he should’ve, it is best for him to tell the truth in that situation but it’s just a little white lie, he didn’t do it to indoctrinate her into his way of thinking, he just spared her the pain of not being wanted anymore. Mystique was totally fine with making Rogue from the first movie think she was not wanted so she could manipulate her into being used as a battery in a machine that would’ve killed her and thousands of others.

    I just realised, this could have been a great movie if Pheonix had been a hero, like she was for a long time in the comics before Dark Pheonix. They're on a mission where Jean is learning to harness her Pheonix powers. Things go wrong, we learn they've been going wrong for a while, and people suspect Jene 'cause she's acting weird. Shenanigans ensue, it comes to light that Jean is hiding stress and depression that's making her act weird. We see the sabotage is being perpetrated by a walking Xavier, a result of Apocalypse's psyche merging halfway with Xaviers' in the previous movie and powered by all xavier's regrets, creating this version of Onslaught. Jean accepts her powers, the whole team comes together to stop Onslaught while Jean enters his mind to find Xavier. She helps him out, giving back for all the students he helped with their insecurities, and they work together to purge Onslaught from Xavier's mind. The end-credit scene shows Onslaught survived and is now in his armored classic form and standing behind Mastermind who tells the Hellfire club they'll be targetting Jean. There you go, marvel, I wrote a better Pheonix movie then any you made, and it's a dark psychological thriller about accepting your trauma and failures and using them to make yourself a better person. I don't need credit or money, just do your damn job and make a decent movie.

We even get to add to lore built from Age of Apocolypse, making it at least a barely decent part of the movies by setting up that lore (rather than ignoring it like this movie did).It smoothly and cohesively sets up an overarching villain who, and I didn't even think about this when I wrote the pitch, is responsible for a multiversal event in the comics, so he could finally connect the X-men to the marvel universe proper. And best of all, it pushes the focus onto Jean for a movie so we can explore her character and get attached before Dark Pheonix ever happens, the key flaw Marvel keeps making.

    Last Stand’s Phoenix was based on the (stigmatizing) myth that people with dissociative identity disorder are inherently violent and dangerous. In contrast, this movie was a much more authentic and thoughtful representation of mental illness than X3.

    Also the events of the first 3 X-men movies are definitely different if Dark Phoenix is canon. During X1 Magneto doesn't kidnap Senator Kelly, mutate him, then start that attack in NYC. X2 probably still happens the same except Quicksilver taking Mystique's place for the fight against Stryker. And X3 happens the same except Jean doesn't kill Professor X since they settled everything in this movie & instead they both team up against Magneto & the Brotherhood over whether Leech dies or lives.

    I looked up Jennifer's stance on being in this film, and now I fully understand how her performance tanked like this. She hated being there. Too bad we can't get a good X-Men movie series. I loved the X-Men growing up. Very burned out on superhero stuff atm though...

    If I can remember correctly I think the aliens in this movie were originally supposed to be Skrulls. But because this was being made around the time when Marvel was buying Fox, they had to change them to what I think were the generic aliens we see in this movie.

    +Channel Awesome Hi Doug and co, I was wondering if you'd ever watched any of the 'Carry On...' films? It'd be interesting to hear about some of them from a contemporary American's perspective - they started out as traditional Ealing-style comedies and ended up as sex-farces but they so often had quirky moments.

    the funny thing about both dark fenixs, is that the 90s animated show took se same amount of "screen time" in matter of episodes. but jean scott and logan are already well stablished.

    The Hellfire Club WERE originally supposed to be in this (with Emma Frost and Psylocke returning), the aliens were actually supposed to be SKRULLS, and Phoenix was going to have a battle in space. The Disney/Fox acquisition forced them to alter it
