WW2 BRITISH GENERAL CIVILLIAN RESPIRATOR GAS MASK FOR AGE 5 TO ADULT

STANDARD WW2 BRITISH CIVIL ISSUE FOR AGE 5 THROUGH ADULT WITH BOX AND VARIOUS OUTERS. THESE ARE CURRENTLY FOUND EVERYWHERE FOR ABOUT £1 TO £5..THEY ARE CURRENTLY NOT EXPENSIVE, BUT THE REALLY GOOD ONES ARE GETTING SCARCE..THE LAST ONE I BOUGHT WAS IN A CHARITY SHOP IN OCTOBER 2012, FOR £5..IT WAS PRETTY ROTTEN, THE MASK WAS BINNED AS IT HAD DISINTEGRATED, BUT I KEPT THE TWO FILTERS AND GAVE THE CARD BOX TO SOMEONE ELSE....IF POSSIBLE, BUY THE BEST ONE YOU CAN..AVOID THOSE THAT SHOW SIGNS OF THE BLACK RUBBER PERISHING...IT IS NON REVERSIBLE AND WILL ONLY DETERIORATE., THE REALLY BAD ONES I ONLY BUY FOR THE FILTER.

I've seen photographs of people carrying those tin tubes about in my Grandfathers war journal and never knew what they were and since his passing haven't had anyone to ask. Thanks for uploading.

Most you find on the market don’t even have the leaflet or decontamination substance tube. Your lucky to have it like that! 👍🏻

Too true, part of the reason I bought it,in a lot of cases the paperwork is harder to find than the masks

Nice collection! I didn't know about the fancy boxes and tins, but I did hear or read somewhere that people also used customised hat boxes too.

Yep,and companies made fancy biscuit tins which when empty could be used as respirator boxes...there was all kinds of fancy holders to enhance what became an everyday must carry item.

@@historicmilitaria1944 I have two in excellent condition. No perishing on one but on the other there’s some small perishing on the edge but it’s hard to spot without looking closely, they also have the boxes. But no anti dimming creams or leaflets or what not. Pretty sure they’re very rare to find as myself has only seen the one on your channel before and nowhere else. I have another that is extremely perished and delicate but not to the point that it’s simply a piece of rubber face piece and filter. Reason I have it is because it’s very local and in my area you wouldn’t ever find anything like that.

True and some companies made biscuit tins which when empty doubled as gas mask boxes, replacing the issue card boxes...the tins are worth more than the mask

The missing items such as the anti dimming tubes can be found on e bay so making a complete set should be no problem..you have the important bit,the mask, the other bits can be added..they are getting hard to find as the rubber tends to get very brittle...theres someone on e bay selling replicas of the mask, which I find incredible that theres a need for a replica

@@historicmilitaria1944 Indeed, how much would you say the GCR is worth these days? I’ve never payed more than £30 odd quid. Recently I’ve bought them for £15-£20. Not a penny more.

I usually buy mint ones but if I see a perished one for an extremely cheap price that isn’t too badly torn or perished I’ll buy it if it is a good price, just to rehome it for the sake of history. After all it’s still a piece of history. Regards, TM.

@@historicmilitaria1944 how can I get rid of some general civilian respirators I have? I have a few that are all broken up or have been damaged and the rubber has rotted or gone hard. Thanks.

Dont bin them, contact your local council, tell them you have some gasmask filters containing asbestos to dispose of,they will have the relevant info...if they are only the rubber mask sections and not the filters, these can go in your bin.

@@historicmilitaria1944 I managed to sell 2 but I cannot get rid of the rest, would I have to pay to contact the council to dispose, it would be hard to see a piece of history be destroyed. Thanks.

You may have to pay for disposal...another idea would be to make up a batch of watered down pva glue and pour it through the front vent holes of the filter....this will eventually set hard and seal in the contents....then sell them as spares...I think theres a tutorial on youtube which shows how to do it.
