WVEC-TV Channel 13, Hampton/Norfolk, VA Sign-off from Spring 1987

Ойын-сауық

An 1987 recording of the sign-off used by the ABC network station for the Hampton Roads area of Virginia (Portsmouth, Norfolk, Newport News, Virginia Beach) during the 1970s and 1980s. A rather unique feature of this sign-off is that the announcer mentions several local and regional newspapers that carries the program listings for WVEC-TV. The video montage segment features scenes of nature and the Hampton Roads area. Also featured are some scenes of Colonial Williamsburg, which is also part of the area. The two historic buildings seen are the Govenor's Palace and the Capitol (Williamsburg was the second capital of the Virginia Colony, the first was Jamestown). Both buildings are 1930s reconstructions of the original early-18th century structures. WVEC-TV originally telecast on UHF Channel 15 and was affiliated with the NBC network during its first six years (1953-59). Channel 15 was reactivated in 1961 when Virginia's first educational station, WHRO-TV, signed on the air.

Apparently WVEC used this song as early as 1974. Someone else posted an audio-only copy of this sign off, and it had “On This Day” at the end.

The announcer for this version of sign-off was WVEC master control Operator John Finlayson. He started in radio before he entered television. I know this because I too was a master control Operator at WVEC from 1974 to 1985 until I left for KHOU in Houston.

I found the song's lyrics in the 1963 edition of IC Norcom High School's yearbook. The song's name is indeed "On This Day," but no authorship is given. The line that a different link lists as "A wealth of an ease I can see" is actually "A welcome on each face I see." It was sung at Norcom's January 1963 commencement, and is listed as "Arranged by M. Lewis." Melvin Lewis was the chorus director at the time. I am now getting the feeling that the song may be locally composed, and this version used by WVEC could be sung by a local church or high school choir.

I have some old audio tape of Joe Foulkes from around Christmas, 1970, giving his forecast. Haven't heard it in years, and I have to buy a machine to play it on, but, when I do, I will upload it to my channel.

I have researched the song, and can't find anything on it. The earliest this clip can originate is 1983, as the vertical lift span of the James River Bridge shown is the current one (which opened in 1982), and the old 1928 span was already demolished.

Truly a one-of-a-kind signoff - but why would the Raleigh, NC newspaper publish their schedule?

Back then, analog TV signals travelled pretty far, and fringe areas of the Raleigh market probably got WVEC in addition to their own ABC station. Richmond is mentioned for the same reason, as eastern parts of the area could cleanly watch channel 13.

Yes, to those of us that grew up there, as it retained its British colonial pronunciation. So did many coastal Virginian locations, Portsmouth, Suffolk, etc.

This song is beautiful!! I grew up in Southeastern VA and would listen to WVEC channel 13 sign-off regularly, just because of this. The National Anthem is something I honor, but this song reflects what I've experienced as an American. These days, I hope/pray many more can/will live what this song expresses. I called the station about 15 years ago, and no one could locate a recording of the song (I've always wanted to do a cover version of it). About 4 years ago, a Mr. Woodis who worked at the station, supplied me with a cassette copy of the song. I called Norfolk State University's Music Dept. about 15 years ago, and someone there suggested that it sounds as though it was being performed by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Before I can even try to compose/sell a cover of the tune, I need the very same info you are looking for as well. :( Sure enough, if you try to use to song in any commercial manner without permission, I bet someone will KNOW exactly who owns and performs it. Lawyers are good at finding stuff like that. :)

Cefshah I have contacted several sheet music libraries (particularly the Library of Congress and several university collections), and have had no leads. I have Googled this song's lyrics several times, and have found nothing that can help. Apparently, some of the middle and high schools in Norfolk performed the song at some point in the 70s and 80s, and their choir departments may have an archive. I may try contacting the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Also, I may try contacting the music departments at HU, VWC, W&M, and CNU (my alma mater) and see if something is in a dusty file cabinet. Also, do you know when the song was retired from use by WVEC? I know it was sometime between 1989 and 1992, because I have seen a 1989 sign-off video with "On This Day," as well as a 1992 one that uses a national anthem video with the Blue Angels. Thank you and good luck. :-)

I have been hunting that information for years to no avail. I actually came back to this video today to see if a copyright claim had been posted. This recording could be so old that it may have lapsed into the public domain. I have a feeling that it predates the 1976 laws and is thus on the 28-year system.
